More Mutant Mopars

Here's one that rolled into the shop that made me gag a bit, but it's a neat Hot Rod.

1969 Charger stuffed with 500 cubes of Scott Schafiroff big block Chevy running 2 stages of nitrous. Ever since Long Island Dragway closed down there's a whole bunch of former bracket cars getting wired for lights and being driven on the street. This is a complete re-wire.

I opened the drivers door and found this…...

Why do guys wired race cars like a grenade? How much longer, or harder, is it to DO IT RIGHT!?!? ​Needless to say, I'll be installing a Painless wiring kit to make it, er…. "Street Legal". With no wipers….defrosters…..heater…. etc.

I can see doing this to a Satellite or a Belvedere…. but a Charger? <sigh…> Having a hard time rationalizing this guys decision to cut up a popular car for a race car, but hey…. his money pays my bills as well as a true Mopar enthusiast!

I wouldn't even do that to a FWD or one of the newer 4dr Chargers.

I just love the rat nest wiring. To me if you are going to do it take the time to do it right. Makes one wonder what else was done poorly.

Yeah, the rats nest is being yanked out. In there is a BRAND NEW Painless harness installed by a "professional" whom was arrested, thrown in re-hab, and in return created a nightmare for the owner of this cross-dressing Mopar to get his car out of the shop. Starting from scratch with a new harness makes it a 2 day job.

That mess looks like a tweeker project ... you have my pity . Lots of butchers around my neck o'the woods ; boredom + uppers + anything electrical = rats' nest fire hazards .

I just found out this car was underwater…. literally. But the guy is nuts-in-love with this car. He had the engine & trans out when Storm Sandy hit. That's why the harness and every electrical item is being replaced. The car was put back together just to get the engine stored afterwards. This project has morphed from a re-wire for lights & drivability, to re-setting the motor plates to get the pinion angle right, I just fabricated an aluminum dash (I'm in love with a fully equipped shop that can make almost anything) and all new Autometer gauges, and now we're getting into the extras: I'm installing a set of Hurst Lightning Rods shifter, a 250 nitrous kit, MSD 6AL-Plus ignition system, etc…. It grows with every phone call. The car is a rat, but it was his old bracket car he built from his first car. It's pure emotions at this point. He KNOWS he's spending good money after bad….. but he hands us money and requests, and we're trying to deliver. So far, he's happy.

40 years ago there was a 55 Chevy with a 440 Mopar engine in it around here. A friend of mine bought it and swapped in a 396 and resold it. He said it was just too wrong to let it be that way. I remember a 65 Mustang with a 327 in it too. Things like this get built. Glad to see it returning to the streets.

As a kid I can remember the bus home from high school passing a straight axle `62 Lancer that had a small block Chevy in it. Neighborhood car that rarely was seen running….

BTW: The owner of the Charger stopped by yesterday. I just finished the lighting wiring and he drops off a set of digital LED tail light assemblies he wants to install….. this project will never end.

I just installed a set of Hurst Lightning Rods shifter in the beast, and fabricated a metal dash w/ Autometer gauges. I also ordered the nitrous kit this afternoon…...

I was so involved working on the Charger this afternoon (HUGE shipment from Speedway today. It was like Christmas) that it was 6:30 before I knew it. I also feel guilty collecting a paycheck. Almost…..

How about the Cadillac Hearse Hauler on Graveyard Carz? A 60 something Caddy Hearse with a MOPAR 440(I think) dual-carb high-rise w/zoomies coming up from underneath behind the front wheels.
