Bob Ellis Posted March 30, 2014 Posted March 30, 2014 I had some luck finding kits of the first 2 real cars that I owned. This Johan '72 Torino was built by me in about 1976. The MPC Mustang II was started about the same time but finished a few years later after sitting partially assembled in the box. The are not contest quality models for sure, but they have some sentimental value as I have had them for 38 years.
cobraman Posted March 30, 2014 Posted March 30, 2014 Nice. I had bought a new 73 Gran Torino Sport and had 2 Mustang 2's. A 74 mach 1 and a 78 King Cobra.
Old Buckaroo Posted March 30, 2014 Posted March 30, 2014 How cool, and the old pics are pretty awesome also. Both models look pretty nice to me.
AZ Boy Posted March 30, 2014 Posted March 30, 2014 Nice builds Bob! Sentimental value for sure. If you don't own the real things anymore, these models are great reminders of days gone by.
351 cleve Posted March 30, 2014 Posted March 30, 2014 Neat Stuff.....From a fellow Coastie....Semper Paratus!
charlie8575 Posted March 30, 2014 Posted March 30, 2014 Nice builds, Bob. Is that a Louisiana plate I see on your Mustang? Charlie Larkin
Bob Ellis Posted March 30, 2014 Author Posted March 30, 2014 (edited) Charlie, the plate on the Mustang II is a 1979 Virginia plate. In May of 1979, I had both cars at Ft Belvoir Virginia. The '72 Torino was traded in at a local Ford dealer for the '76 Mustang II which cost me $3200 after trading in the Torino. Every week the Torino was costing me money in repairs. It was also rusted badly from Maine winters and it got 9-13 mpg. The Torino just died one day, thankfully. I bought and took possession of the '76 Mustang in one day. As a Second Lieutenant, I got the Mustang on a I.O.U and the ex-Army Col salesman told me to call USAA for insurance and run down to Pentagon Federal Credit Union to get a loan. One Saturday later, I went to Pentagon, paid $5 for a share, and walked out with a check to pay Jerry's Ford for the Mustang. The loan and my Army commitment were both 2 years and nobody was worried about losing a dime. The Mustang II was the perfect car in 1979 as it had a 4 speed, ran decent and got up to 28 mpg. They were giving away V8 cars that year. Edited March 30, 2014 by Bob Ellis
rmvw guy Posted March 30, 2014 Posted March 30, 2014 These kind of builds always mean the most to me of a past ride. Nice job on both and I love the station too.
Rob Hall Posted March 30, 2014 Posted March 30, 2014 Cool...I've only been able to build kits of 3 of the cars I've owned. Most of them have never been kitted.
Platerpants Posted March 31, 2014 Posted March 31, 2014 Nice I like them. i did the same for my 2000 f150 (lindberg 4x4 and lightning kitbash) but have yet to pick up a 97 f150 kit. https://scontent-a.xx.fbcdn.net/hphotos-ash2/t1.0-9/1003306_664312783598654_1487980643_n.jpg http://www.f150forum.com/members/platerpants-174224/albums/chugging-chuck-s-replacement/84702-front.jpg
