cruz Posted July 7, 2014 Posted July 7, 2014 (edited) It's funny that this thread started out saying the slicks were too small, now we're saying they're too big?!?! Gotta love this place sometimes.... Here's my mock up pic from a few pages back flipped to make it closer to the pic above. The slicks are pretty close to the leaf springs so if you want them in more you'll need to narrow the rear. (I see mirrors and marker lights on that car - wonder if it's just a clone or a show car?) So Brett, is that the kit stance in the front? I like it! I might however also use the Johan front tires, the ones on the kit are too wide.... Edited July 7, 2014 by cruz
gtx6970 Posted July 7, 2014 Posted July 7, 2014 (I see mirrors and marker lights on that car - wonder if it's just a clone or a show car?) Bretti, Sorry, I can't answer that one. I grab any and every pic I come up with off the net of any old Drag car prior to about the1972-73 time frame. So I have no idea who , when or where the picture was taken. thus my note when I posted it. I looked thru my pics file of this car and in the ones I can tell ,,, all of them sure looks like the tires are completely under the body. I don't know the rules back then so I am guessing,,,,,maybe a 10.5" tire in the 29-30" tall area ???????
cruz Posted July 8, 2014 Posted July 8, 2014 I decided to add the decals to the kit tires and make another comparison against the Johan tires. After sanding the sharp outer perimeter of the tires, they truly are looing better than the Johans. I need to purchase some Firestone decals to make them complete. I am thinking about using the Johan tires for the front since they are skinnier and look more period correct.....
tim boyd Posted July 8, 2014 Posted July 8, 2014 (edited) I checked the photos of the restored car in the Popular Hot Rodding feature in 2008 (presumably the car Revell referenced in developing the kit). It does not have side mirrors, and it does not have side marker lights. TB Edited July 8, 2014 by tim boyd
Force Posted July 8, 2014 Posted July 8, 2014 I believe he talks about this one....it could be a clone and the picture is taken at a later stage and not in 1970. This car also has Centerline or Cragar Super Trick wheels instead of the regular Keystone Classics, Bear Paw or 5 slots of the other cars.
caine440 Posted July 9, 2014 Posted July 9, 2014 I have some set from special apperance decals. I do not think they are still around. I am hoping Chuck will have a new set ready by the time I get this to the decal stage. hint hint

I sent them lots of photos for reference. Jim Kampmann

(I see mirrors and marker lights on that car - wonder if it's just a clone or a show car?) What Chrysler did on their pro stock leaf springs was to use offset brackets the moved the springs inboard. This got a bit more space for the tires. Another thing to remember about the 1970 Pro Stock rules (at least NHRA) was these were an outgrowth of Super Stock rules. The original PS rules were so limited, thet had a specific front rear weight balance (no mmore than 55% on rear) required in the rules. Mant of the cars carried spares to help make that weight rule.
Burnout Posted July 11, 2014 Posted July 11, 2014 Stumbled across this thread last night, tons of potential SS/DA cars in there. Just need the shaker hood from the stock kit and a Torqueflite and you're there. http://board.moparts.org/ubbthreads/showflat.php?Cat=0&Number=6344980&page=6&fpart=all&vc=1 This one is pretty cool - the "Sun Kissed Cuda" Not the S&M Pro Stock (though prepped by S&M) but this link contains an old magazine article on this car. It was retired by owner in 1975 as it was raced rather than be outfitted with a roll bar! http://board.moparts.org/ubbthreads/showflat.php?Cat=&Board=Racer&Number=6078799&Searchpage=1&Main=6078596&Words=+Choppintime&topic=&Search=true
Jim_Kampmann Posted July 12, 2014 Posted July 12, 2014 There's a pretty good article on the car in the February 1970 issue of Hot Rod. Scans taken from Ebay, sorry! Jim Kampmann
cruz Posted July 15, 2014 Posted July 15, 2014 Found me a good way to build the right tunnel RAM for this engine!
Bowtienutz Posted July 15, 2014 Posted July 15, 2014 glad someone is paying attention Cruz. ! After our chat at the meeting Looks like you followed along very well. This goes back to the links I posted on page three of this post. many years ago my friend Frank Kokosza built the must accurate 70 barracuda you can imagine. The Revell kit won't hold a candle to Franks build. You can find lots of pictures and a description of what he did and what you might want to fix with the help of Frank's extensive research here. http://public.fotki....70_cuda/engine/ http://public.fotki....martin_70_cuda/
Brett Barrow Posted July 15, 2014 Posted July 15, 2014 Found me a good way to build the right tunnel RAM for this engine! Looks great and is a major improvement over the kit piece. But don't call it a tunnel ram... The purists will cringe. The preferred nomenclature is "Individual runner".
cruz Posted July 15, 2014 Posted July 15, 2014 Yes Vince, those pictures were certainly very helpful and I must give credit to you and Frank. I went with metal tubes instead of plastic but luckily they were pretty good to work with.
meaneyme Posted July 16, 2014 Posted July 16, 2014 Hey Cruz, any way you can cast that thing in resin or have someone do it for you? I would love to have one copy for myself. What carbs are you using for this?
Force Posted July 17, 2014 Posted July 17, 2014 (edited) There's a pretty good article on the car in the February 1970 issue of Hot Rod. Scans taken from Ebay, sorry! Jim Kampmann Here are a couple of articles from the magazines back then. First some larger more readable pictures from the Hot Rod February 1970 article you posted And a later article from Cars December 1970...note that they used dual distributors and dual plug heads by then as in the later 1971 'Cuda. cruz Posted July 18, 2014 Posted July 18, 2014 Okay guys, so, did they run with dual distributors and single also? Just want to make sure I get this right.......
Brett Barrow Posted July 18, 2014 Posted July 18, 2014 (edited) Okay guys, so, did they run with dual distributors and single also? Just want to make sure I get this right....... Single in 1970, The dual came in 71. Looks like they tried dual early, took it off, brought it back later. For the restored car the Revell kit represents, single is the way to go. If you're striving for period accuracy, you'll need to source a reinforced racing bellhousing they were mandatory on manual transmissions. I haven't been able to find a good picture of what Sox ran. I got all excited when I saw the pic above then noticed the disclaimer below it Edited July 18, 2014 by Brett Barrow
Force Posted July 18, 2014 Posted July 18, 2014 (edited) Yes the pictures from the 1970 Hot Rod Magazine show the mock up clutch can as the car was just built at the time and wasn't finished and in race condition. As you can see in my last pictures S & M did obviously try dual plug heads already in 1970 but I think it was late in the year, because those pictures are from Hi Performance Cars Monthly Magazine December 1970 and the car is one of their 70 'Cuda's...but of course the pictures can have been taken anytime during 1970 as the magazines save material to do articles over the whole year. They did run dual plug heads in the 71 'Cuda but the distributors were a different setup as they used dual magnetos in that car. Edited July 18, 2014 by Force

Other teams ran dual distributors in 70, here's Don Grotheer at York Pa in May. I recall seeing a Sox and Martin picture from that same race that shows singles. I may have posted it already in this thread. If the photos for the Cars Magazine article were all taken at the same time it would be early because it still has the un-cut six pack scoop. Thanks for posting those, BTW. You Scandinavians really love your Pro/Super Stocks, don't you! Edited July 18, 2014 by Brett Barrow
Force Posted July 18, 2014 Posted July 18, 2014 (edited) Oh yes we do. Yes I have seen several teams/guys running both dual distributors/dual plug heads and singles on their Hemi's during the early to mid 70's in Pro Stock. I don't have the Cars article itself, just these pictures so I don't know if they are taken at the same time, the Cars magazine was from December and the Hot Rod article is from February and shows single plug heads...so I assumed the Cars pictures were late...but Sox & Martin had several cars active at the same time as they did both the NHRA, AHRA cirquit and lots of match racing during the year, and they could have changed some things around a bit now and then...but I don't know for sure. caine440 Posted July 18, 2014 Posted July 18, 2014 (edited) Indeed looks like 1970 for the Landy twin plug. Scroll down a little aand there is the story. Love all the interest this kit is getting! http://www.modelcarsmag.com/forums/?showtopic=40562 Edited July 18, 2014 by caine440
Brett Barrow Posted July 18, 2014 Posted July 18, 2014 (edited) Here's that picture I mentioned before. I thought it was a little clearer that it was a single setup, but it's not so easy to tell. There are pictures of this car from same race showing red rear bumper, so this would have had a mismatched set with chrome on the front. Edited July 18, 2014 by Brett Barrow
