Jon Haigwood Posted August 3, 2014 Posted August 3, 2014 While searching thru the attic I came across a box of old Model car mags, dated from 1960 up to 1995. Lots good tips and reference pics.Found a small one dated 1961 "Custom Car Models" by George Barris, another from 1996 listing all the 32Ford model kit(not model A's). Also found some 1:1 Custom Car Mags, one doing a article on the"new" Mustang and the "new" Valiant Barracuda.Even found one with a fairly large article on the Attempt.I have got to get my scanner fixed and share some of these with you.Anybody else have some Old magazines with great info in them?
von Zipper Posted August 3, 2014 Posted August 3, 2014 I picked up this magazine in the mid 1980's at a 1:1 car swap meet for $20.00. The inside cover says Copyright 1951 This is sort of car related, I got this book in 1977 when I had machine shop class at a Detroit public High School 'Ol Primitive Pete always got into trouble using tools in the wrong way
unclescott58 Posted August 3, 2014 Posted August 3, 2014 Good old Primitive Pete. They use to show us Primitive Pete cartoons in show classes still back in the 1970's. Love them. When a friend or I either use or even contemplate using the wrong tool, I still will make reference to being Primitive Pete. Scott
unclescott58 Posted August 3, 2014 Posted August 3, 2014 Oh, I forgot this was about magazines. I read all of the model magazines over Model Encyclopedia on line. But, they did not have complete set of some of the publications. It would be a lot of fun to be able to see and read complete collections from the 60's and 70's. Or before. By the way they do have the 1961 "Custom Car Models" by George Barris over at Model Encyclopedia. I think that first issue was the only one published. Anybody know anything about that? Scott

Ace-Garageguy Posted August 3, 2014 Posted August 3, 2014 I started collecting vintage Hot Rod, Rod & Custom, etc. mags again back in 2005. I gave them all away back in the days when flatheads were looked on as good for nothing but boat anchors and scrap metal, about the time I fell in love with my first Porsche. It's when I started to re-read the old articles that I realized how much entirely useful information I'd been exposed to during my early hot-rod phase. Everything from an understanding of the effect of the timing and lift of camshafts to an in-depth education on magnetos was to be found on those old pages. There's a guy close by who supplements his retirement income buying and selling them, and I've traded some of my more pristine copies for the dog-eared and coffee-stained ones I prefer...the ones that actually get used in the shop for reference.

mnwildpunk Posted August 3, 2014 Posted August 3, 2014 I used to hang on to all my old magazine but they took up to much room and the boxes were heavy and a pain to move so after 20+ yrs I gave most of them away I still hold onto my hemmings classic car and muscle car mags
unclescott58 Posted August 4, 2014 Posted August 4, 2014 thanks or the info on Model Car Encyclopedia. I couldn't find the 61 Custom Car Models I did find 1962 mag called Custom Kar also by George Barris ,only one issue. I will look somemore later I'm glad you clarified the name of the web site. I forgot the "car" part in Model Car Encyclopedia. But that is the right place. And the Barris mag is 1962, rather than 1961? So did he publish more than one issue? And the Barris issue Model Car Encyclopedia has makes it sound like it was the first issue. I have no idea. Scott
disabled modeler Posted August 4, 2014 Posted August 4, 2014 Years ago I picked up a old 1964 Motor trend mag it showed the new 1964 station wagons and where they tested them.

Wow ! I thought I had a lot with about 800 or so. Mine are a mix of car, model, kit car and gun mags.
wayne swayze Posted August 4, 2014 Posted August 4, 2014 I used to have 100's, but gave most away a few years back. I still have a stack of "real" cars mags, and a lot of car model mags. But my favourite has to be my 1961 Custom Craft small mag with a photo of a model I built on the Editor's page (4). My Mom bought it and gave it to me in1969, just before I moved to my own place. She was really proud of what I had done...and yes, I loved my Mom!!

Scott The one at Model Encyclopedia is 1962 The one I have is a 1961
Mark Posted August 4, 2014 Posted August 4, 2014 The one at Model Encyclopedia is 1962 1.jpg The one I have is a 1961 Picture 1.jpg The top one was probably done with more than a little backing from AMT...note the AMT logo on the cover. As I recall, most of the articles and content dealt with AMT products also. I've got that one, but I'm not sure where it is so I can't say who published that one. The lower one is a Spotlite book, published by Petersen (Hot Rod, Rod & Custom, etc). There were a series of Spotlite books, each covered a specific topic like bodywork, upholstery, engine swaps, customizing ideas, and so on. I've known people who try to collect the entire series of those books.
