Just a random thought. Do you have those kits or group of kits that you can't remember when or where you got them or why in the world you even have them in the first place, and you keep pushing them to the back of the stash in order to avoid building them??

I find myself in that predicament now. I keep getting awesome kits that I'm excited to build and I keep telling myself I really need to finish these kits I don't really care for.

My current kit I am loathing to build is AMT'S 94 Camaro z/28

why would you want to build kits you don't want to build? use them for parts or sell or give them away. life is too short, build what you like, that's my advice

Tastes and interests change. I'm not one to use a whole kit just for a few parts. So I actually have reorganized my stash of kits to put the ones I'm least interested in first, to give me a boost of enthusiasm to build so I can get to the ones I'm looking forward to building.

Any kits I would avoid building have either been given away , scrapped for parts, blown up on or around the fourth on July with firecrackers (body's at least) lol or traded. No point in building a kit that's going to cost time and resources that can go to other kits .

Then again, I hardly have any kit in my stash I don't wanna build. I don't buy kits I don't like, 90s nascar kit are the ones I'm mainly talking about

I wouldn't say I have kits that I avoid building. It's more like I have so many kits that I don't expect, or have a plan, to build half of them! I call it a collection. I enjoy owning them, some of them just fill holes in a run or series of kits. For some of them, one day I'll see a photo or otherwise get a great idea that involves that specific kit. I'll be happy I have it then.

I have a few kits that I bought for a good price long ago, and I'm sure most of them have parts I'll use on projects that I build these days. When I bought them, I really thought I'd get around to them someday. But to just have them is a really nice feeling... I'll never run out of possible projects.

edit to be a bit more specific:

so you put the kits you don't want to build in front of the ones you do want to build, and by that method you increase your enthusiasm for building? never thought of it that way...with me its the polar opposite, it would kill my enthusiasm I think.

Mustang Mach III, i have one ive been working for a year. This kit seems to find me all the time. In the last year i have had 2 given to me and got another 4 in parts lots or kit lots. They are like nascars, cant give them away.

I've avoided building kits for certain subjective reasons :

- MPC 1972 Duster annual . Not out of disinterest , but more so because I can't bring my-self to build it box stock ! That stupid under-sized engine (more like 1/26 or 1/27 scale !) really kills it .

I'm going to postpone building this kit until I refine my weakened skills . It'll eventually get the AMT 1971 Duster bash !

- MPC 1978 Chevy Pickup annual . I've been dying to get my hands on an unbuilt copy for absolutely decades ! Well , I finally did get one (at a super great price , too !) , but again , I'm fearful of building it . Not because of the same reasons for which I'm avoiding the aforementioned Duster , but because I'm afraid of screwing it up ! The only non-box-stock item that I'm planning to use would be some resin copies of the AMT Chevy Van wheels (steel wheels with hubcaps) .

I guess enthusiasm isn't really the word I was looking for. But the way I figure is if I get these kits built and out of the way then I won't have to keep pushing them to the back of the stash every time their number comes up. Only to put them off again.

Just do a quicky build or try a new painting style. I have way too many kits I will not build in my lifetime but I have traded a few off for something I will build, well hopefully .LOL

I saw these cars in person when I was in high school. The guy that built them brought both prototypes to the hotel where I worked valet at. They had the debut of the Thunderbird at the time and there was some sort of Ford motor show for executives or something like that. I couldn't believe how ugly they were or why the guy spent so much time and money building them. One was red. I want to say the second one was either yellow or also red. It's been a while. Never heard from or saw them again.

I am fighting with myself to stay away from my Grand Sport. I have so many detail parts and so many ideas to make this a super detailed build, I am waiting for my skills to get better. For the life of me, i cannot figure out how I will paint the stripe on the photoetched hood fins. Stupid little things like this make me put it away and not touch it for a bit.

Same thing with my Mustang GTO IMSA car. I want to do a super detailed build, but I am waiting to get better. Lot's of scratch building and surgery on that kit.

It sounds like you are forcing yourself to build kits you don't really want to build. If you want to get them out of the way then it sounds more like a chore than a hobby. Just my opinion.

I bought a few kits at good prices that I have lost some interest in but when I trade a kit off sometimes I end up regretting it and want to build it..

Posted

I rarely ever have that problem Ill build almost anything but what I do find I lost interest in I just take over to the guys in my disabled builders group to build...makes them very happy..me too.

I have always found that some kits are never really intended to build when guys buy them....but many of us want to own them regardless. I feel that if a certain project may feel like its going to be more of a chore or pain in the butt, best to choose something in your comfort zone than end up wasting time, product, and money, on a kit that usually ends up in the half built pile. I also think that many builders avoid certain models to build because they may feel that they are unable to build that kit as well as some they have seen built by other builders that may be more skilled in general . if any or all of these things make a builder feel uncertain, walk away for a week or two, and them pick an easier build. lets face it, any kit can be taken as basic or as far as you want to take it..............just my thoughts a.c. the ace.............

i have no problem building any of my models but there are a few i keep dragging my feet ( revell dodge revellion, mpc milners rail and milners 32 ford) because they are so hard to get let alone the cost. but i have picked up all of them for a second time around that were either started or resin bodies. last year i found a mint revelloin body only for $20 and it is already started and i have several tony nancy kits, bought a resin milners rail body off of rat nasty and decals both are awsome, and picked up a started milners coupe and i finished it so that made me happy not touching all three mint kits.

In the time period from when I was out of high school, through my 20s, I wasn't building models but I would still cruise the model car aisle at stores and buy promising vehicles. I wasn't in touch with the hobby at the time, so I could go to Child World and find a new kit I never saw before. I kinda miss that!

Anyway, I amassed about 30 kits, primarily Mopar that I wanted to have nicely built. I didn't think I had the skills at the time (actually I proved that to myself!) so I reasoned that I would hold onto them until I got good enough as a builder to do them justice.

Well, I found a club, and my primary goal was to enhance my skills to be 'good enough' to do those Mopars. I started to 'practice' on newly purchased kits that weren't so dear to me. Once in the hobby, the new stimuli around me took me away. I got plenty good as a builder in the next 25 years, but guess what? I never built any one of those Mopars!

I'm just dragging my feet on them because I dont like them as much as other kits. Doesnt mean I'm not going to do as good of a job on them. I actually spend probably 30mins or so last night cleaning off flashing and cleaning up parts. Im just really excited to get to my hot rods that ive collected, and the roadkill cars I have ideas for that some of the kits I have, I just dont feel excited about.

idk, just a thought. I agree though, its not fun if you have to force yourself. But, I put on some Rockford Files or Magnum P.I. on Netflix and start building and it doesnt seem as bad.

I'll post pictures when I'm done with it.

My problem is more that my production schedule keeps changing. I have many of the new kits that came out the past few years. I have all the Mobius cars and all the Revell new releases such as the Barracuda, Mustang PD, '57 Ford and '50 Olds. I even have a cool resin wagon body for the Olds. I have great ideas for all of them. What happens is that I get something new I'm excited about and start building it. Or there's a club theme build so I start something related to that. Overall my problem is that I have way too much stimuli to pick just one to build!

Buick GN-X; I'm afraid of black paint jobs. I'll conquer it eventually. Johan Chrysler 300, '72 Grand Prix, and a few others; I can't make up my mind on what style I want to build them in. I'l probably just find a color in the nail polish aisle and then inspiration will strike. That or find the "right" set of wheels and tires and then it's a go.

I'm the same way. I see something neat, and instantly the gears start turning and I think of some cool way to build it, then next thing you know I'm looking for resin parts, or buying new paint colors, then I mock it up, put it back in the box, and go A.D.D. on another kit lol
