cruz Posted January 15, 2008 Posted January 15, 2008 I decided to build a 49 Merc like the rest of the country so forgive me Just painted the body sunday night and it's almost time for some polishing and waxing I used Model Car Garages' Stromberg carburetor detail set and even though it was kind of tedious I think they will ultimately look good on top of the engine, later I will connect some fuel lines onto the firewall. Also decided to go with an Ultima battery. I am painting the interior the same color as the engine which is Verdoro Green for contrast with the body color. Hope to have this done in another 3 weeks or so, hopefully
Gray Smith Posted January 15, 2008 Posted January 15, 2008 Marcos, Dude that engine is just gorgeous , those strombergs look great....I definanitly will get a set of them now.. quick question...where does one find Verdoro green that is a very nice color great build so far, look forward to seeing more Gray
Randy Kern Posted January 15, 2008 Posted January 15, 2008 You're outa control, man. I think you're heading to Gearyville! That looks killer, Cruz. You didn't mention the brand of paint or shade on the body, but that's eye popping! That interior color will really look good with it. That motor came out cool, too. That one should stand out from the crowd. Nick and I will have to get down to the MAMA meeting Sat, hope to see you there!
FordRodnKustom Posted January 15, 2008 Posted January 15, 2008 Wow, that's NIICE! Those carbs look great. No, never get tired of seeing 49 Merc builds. Be sure to post more of this one!
Mike Chernecki Posted January 15, 2008 Posted January 15, 2008 Awesome Merc. I think green is one of the nicest colors to paint a Merc. quick question...where does one find Verdoro green that is a very nice color Verdoro green is a late 60s Pontiac color. Many '68 Firebirds were paint that color.

Frank Steffens Posted January 16, 2008 Posted January 16, 2008 Those carbs look AMAZING! Fantastic work so far!
Wildrice Posted January 16, 2008 Posted January 16, 2008 Thats one sweet looking Merc. Excellent color choice. Engine detail is top notch.
Raul_Perez Posted January 16, 2008 Posted January 16, 2008 Marcos, You did a GREAT job installing the MCG linkage on the carbs!!! That looks awesome!! I didn't know that PE set was available. I'll have to order a few for myself!! The battery also looks great!! Who did you get it from? When I built my Merc I had to move the battery back to the firewall because I used the Ford 4.6L modular engine. Those heads were just to big to fit in the engine compartment without making a "little extra room". The paint looks great as is!! I can't believe that you still need to polish it!! Keep up the great work and the posts!! Gregg, Maybe you need to add separate pages to the forum for '49 Mercs and '32 Fords. I think there's enough of them for their own site!! Regards,
MrObsessive Posted January 16, 2008 Posted January 16, 2008 Uh Oh! I gotta watch my back! That carb detail is excellent Cruz! Yes it's tedious, but well worth the effort for an engine like that! Keep up the great work!
cruz Posted January 16, 2008 Author Posted January 16, 2008 Thanks for the replies fellas. Sorry about answering the questions so late, had to do a few chores last night and could not get back to my computer until this morning. The paint is Lime Time from the HOK 3 step sytem that Wal-Mart use to carry. The clear is Odds and Ends. Painted the basecoat white before adding the color. It looks good on the pictures but believe you me, it needs a lot of attention in the polishing department. I had a bottle of Rainbow Colors lacquer paint laying around for years and decided to use it on the engine, they are not in business anymore I believe the battery is from a Detail Master kit I also had around my parts bin for several years and decided to use it. Last night I started rubbing out the body and it's really coming along nicely, I will have pictures very soon for you guys to check out. Randy, I will try to go to the MAMA meeting this Saturday but can't promise you certainty!! Is that a word?? Again, thanks for the replies my friends, glad to know you like it!!!!
cruz Posted January 17, 2008 Author Posted January 17, 2008 As promised, these are the photos taken after the polishing of the paint, lots of curves on this car so I had to be careful not to rub through some of them but all in all it was very therapeudic Next is the BMF and on to the interior!!!
Gray Smith Posted January 17, 2008 Posted January 17, 2008 Awesome Marcos! that paint looks great, and excellent polish job too, I bet its blinding in the sunlight..speaking of which...lets see some outdorrs shots! Gray p.s. good luck with the rest of the build.

geetee66 Posted January 17, 2008 Posted January 17, 2008 Those carbs look amazing with the PE details! I love the paint as well. This build is like a benchmark to me. inspirational !!
cruz Posted January 17, 2008 Author Posted January 17, 2008 This is more or less what I am looking for, nothing like a picture of a 1/1 for inspiration. Hopefully I don't get in trouble with Dave Lindsay about using his picture on the forum Sorry Dave!!
Ron Hamilton Posted January 19, 2008 Posted January 19, 2008 I saw this car today, and it is drop dead gorgeous.
Lyle Willits Posted January 19, 2008 Posted January 19, 2008 I think your model is closer to this car's color. The model body is beautiful. Saw it today with my very own old eyes!

You are right Lyle, that is more of the color I am going for, is that one of Dave Lindsay's photos or was it a show you attended???
cruz Posted January 21, 2008 Author Posted January 21, 2008 This is a little bit more work I was able to put into my Merc on the weekend!!!! I will be using Norms interior parts to complete the interior of this model, I will have to make some mounting holes on the door panels and also Alclad some of these parts to do my final touch ups!!!!
Raul_Perez Posted January 22, 2008 Posted January 22, 2008 Looking good, Marcos!! Don't forget to make an idler arm from the steering linkage. The Revell boys did a great job in giving us a pitman arm off of the steering box, but the left the other side just hanging out in space... Regards,

Raul_Perez Posted January 22, 2008 Posted January 22, 2008 Hey, I was just looking at that! I will definetly keep that in mind, thanks!!!! I can't believe that they left it out. It's such a small and easy part to make...Oh well, maybe they'll add it in next time...

Gray Smith Posted January 22, 2008 Posted January 22, 2008 Chassis work looks as good as the motor work Marcos...this whole build is shaping up to be a front and center display for the shelf. I like those interior parts..I bet they'd work well on the 32 sedan as well...hmmm Keep up the good work man Gray
