Gregg Posted January 16, 2008 Posted January 16, 2008 I got invited to sit on the floor of the opening day ceremonies for the 2008 Legislative Session here in Hawaii tomorrow morning. Not to sit on the floor, like no more chairs, but on the floor with a Senator I have been working with lately. It's a big thrill, and I am very excited, anxious, and nervous about. I actually got on the air on our local talk radio station yesterday and asked our governor some specific and pointed questions about a project I am working on. Just wanted to share with my family some pretty big news in my life.
Danno Posted January 16, 2008 Posted January 16, 2008 That is big, Gregg! Enjoy. It's an experience you won't forget (I know), and one that not so many people ever get. It may sound odd to many, but there really is a special rush from being there, in the heart of the lawmaking process. We'll look forward to a full progress report from our new HI Legislative Reporter. Best regards, and good luck for your project!
Len Geisler Posted January 16, 2008 Posted January 16, 2008 Greg, That is great stuff!!!! Good for you, and enjoy....Keep us posted of your progress!!!!
Harry P. Posted January 16, 2008 Posted January 16, 2008 So................are you gonna tell us what it is you're working on?
Randy Kern Posted January 16, 2008 Posted January 16, 2008 It would be cool to have someone in the high office who is into model cars. Gregg for President!!
Mike Whatshisname Posted January 16, 2008 Posted January 16, 2008 That's pretty cool! Is there a web broadcasting of the event? Good luck and PLEASE don't hurt your back while sitting on the floor.....
ismaelg Posted January 16, 2008 Posted January 16, 2008 Tax credit for model purchases? State law requiring citizens to build at least 1 model per fiscal year? State law to declare glue bombs an act of terrorism? State subsidy to distribute the mag to the masses? State approval for running model pictures in the mag of alcohol and tobacco sponsored race cars? TELL US!
Darin Bastedo Posted January 16, 2008 Posted January 16, 2008 You're going to be in a room full of politicains? leave your wallet at home, and keep an eye on your baby's candy!
Howard Cohen Posted January 16, 2008 Posted January 16, 2008 'Model Cars', the official state magazine of Hawaii Does this mean 'hula girls' in the magazine I have an idea of how you feel as a friend is the new Lieutenant Governor of Ontario and I was thrilled to meet him in his official capacity on New Year's Day. That smile you incur will stay with you for a week or so.
DrewC Posted January 16, 2008 Posted January 16, 2008 So, what' the project? The suspense is overwhelming! Good luck!
Gregg Posted January 17, 2008 Author Posted January 17, 2008 You guys crack me up!!!! The project is a skateboard park near my house I am on the Palolo Neighborhood Board, and got into this by accident. I formed a nonprofit organization, Skateparks Of Hawaii Association (SOHA), and we had our first meeting last week. We are trying to get the State to cede the DOT land over over to the City so that the Park Department can build the park. I will be doing fundraising, grant requests, and other NPO money seeking activities. We have the Y here as our fiscal agent, so we are also tax deductible under their 501 3 C It's a learning experience, to say the least Yes, it was a blast to sit on the floor, don't think the smile will go away for a long long time.

lordairgtar Posted January 17, 2008 Posted January 17, 2008 Even as an old fart( I remember skate boards from the sixties...short pieces of wood with metal wheels) I supported local building of a skate park. I seem to remember a Dan and Jean tune about sidewalk surfing. Its chorus went "bust yer buns, bust yer buns"
Gregg Posted January 17, 2008 Author Posted January 17, 2008 Now, the fun part! Free one year subscription to the person who can name the distinguished guests in this pic at the opening day in the Hawaii State Senate!
Barbo Posted January 17, 2008 Posted January 17, 2008 (edited) Is That your wife in the center ?.........Congrats, I never skated before cause of my physical condition , but I was always there for my kids when they were in the skate boarding sport . And I know how it feels......Barbo. Edited January 17, 2008 by Barbo
Ariel Posted January 17, 2008 Posted January 17, 2008 Nope, this is my wife I guess everything went well I was watching CNN last nite and didn't see one of the crazy scenes like in China. When they start fighting and beating each other with shoes. How much did you have to pay the woman to take her picture. Ariel
Ariel Posted January 17, 2008 Posted January 17, 2008 (edited) Heh, Epstein, BYTE ME!!!! Come on are we not all ohana? Edited January 17, 2008 by Ariel
Ken Posted January 17, 2008 Posted January 17, 2008 They built a great public skate park here in Oklahoma City a couple of years ago. Everyone in the newsroom thought I was crazy when I got so excited about the guests brought in for the opening. It is named after Mr concussion himself Matt Hoffman. When the Tony Hawk Jam came to town they all snuck out one night and overran the park. It was really cool to hang out with someone I grew up reading about in Thrasher and such. I haven't skated in ages. Heck, my last board was a Gator Grahowlski(can't spell it) with tracker six bys and Powell rat bones. I will try and effort some pics to give you some ideas if you want them.
KT EASTMAN Posted January 20, 2008 Posted January 20, 2008 Just curious Gregg, are we talking about a skate park or a skate/bike park?? We have a few parks here in the Springs but some of them are "skate only" parks. As a fomer Pro BMX/Freestyler in the 80's I was kinda bummed out that there are parks that you could not bike on but there is no bike only parks?? Skateboards and rollerblades only lead to damaged tailbones and hurt egos for me!!! LOL!!! Anyway, how did everything go?? Hopefully it went well!!! KT
chris coffey Posted January 20, 2008 Posted January 20, 2008 How cool is your expirence, Gregg!!! that truely must be a honor to do what you did!! We got a pretty cool skate park built here in Spokane, with the help of the Tony Hawk Foundation. They provided some plans and i also believe they provided some funding as well. Gives the neighborhood kids something to do, and keeps them somewhat out of trouble with neighborhood businesses. HEY!! if you still can, get some legislature going on providing the model companies more tax lieniency for more new kits produced!! LOL!!!!
