1959 Plymouth Fury - Class of '59 - Entry #4

After an almost 3 month hiatus from model building, I finally got my butt down to my model room to finish this car which I started back in Spring. With the onset of nice weather and doing outside chores I just wasn't in the mood to be cooped up down in my basement. In addition we had a handyman do a bunch of chores and Mr. Fixit type stuff in and around the house for the past 2 months. With Fall approaching I'll be getting back to working on the dozens of 1950's cars I have stockpiled.

This Plymouth is a Johan promo that I picked up last year on EBAY. The buildup details can be found in the Workbench thread for this car that I posted last year.

Thanks Harry. Boy the camera really makes those little gaffs stand out. The roof color is Wimbledon White and the body color is Duplicolor Light Blue Metallic.

Nice Rich! Is it an original promo, A kit, or one of the X-el repops? I don't see any warpage so I'm guessing it's not an original. As far as I know, the original promo & the X-el promo didn't have an interior, only the annual kit. I have one of the X-el kits with a Modelhaus resin interior that I built many years ago that's in desperate need of a re-build. I love the '59 Plymouths & I need a companion for my '59 Dodge! Steve

Steven, I think this is a repop promo and you're right in that it is not warped at all. It has a resin interior that I got from Modelhaus. I trimmed off the side glass and added interior visors made from sheet plastic and a dome light.

I've got a bunch of other '59's to work on including a '59 Chrysler New Yorker and a '59 DeSoto. I've already done a '59 Imperial and '59 Dodge so I'll eventually have all the '59 Mopars done.

Jeff, I don't know if I'll be bringing this one to the Castle Shannon show as I have a few others that I was planning to bring.

Peter, I also have a '59 Ford promo in my TO DO pile...... and it's a very BIG pile. I've got at least 2 dozen 1950's cars waiting to be worked on.

Bruce, yeah in addition to the flat black in the wheelwells, I have to add an antenna and fix that divot on the driver side chrome trim.

Looks great Rich. Funny thing is I don't remember you starting this one. My cousin George had a 1959 Belvedere 2 door hardtop like this one when we were 18. His was green with a creme color top, and a Rayco green interior. Pushbutton trans and flatty six. That was a cool car, and I have all the parts in one box for that build one day.

You probably have the promo repop or kit, as the originals all had that Johan smile.

I have a bit of a soft spot for the '59 Plymouths myself. My dad had a aqua colored '59 Savoy 2 door sedan when I was about 6 or 7 years old. I remember it sitting on the side street of our house for a year or 2 not running. It was a second car & my dad never got around to fixing it. But I sure remember using it for a playground! I spent many hours behind the wheel of that old Plymouth traveling the world in my imagination. Eventually my dad sold it & I had to resort to other forms of ammusement. Steve

Beautiful as always Rich. I always liked the 59 Fury with the headlight eyebrows. Bringing these old promos up to the latest standards is very rewarding. Great job.

Great job. Luv the color combo. Brings back memories. My dads Fury was a light shade of green with the white roof. The bucket seats would swivel out. I spent a lot of time in that car pretend driving. That push button tranny was so kool.

You jarred an aged memory! My Uncle Tom had a '59 Plymouth and when we were up at his lake house, he'd sit me on his lap and let me 'drive'. I was probably 5 or so and really thought I was driving since I was holding the wheel and steering straight. So I guess that was the first car I ever drove!

That's going to be worth watching - have you thought of kitbashing them into coupes using the roof (but not the A-pillars or windshield) and back window from the AMT '57 Chrysler 300? I have one of the DeSotos and a 300 that I'd like to pull the trigger on.

I've been very lucky in being able to pick up so many on EBAY last year for cheap prices that are not warped and that have good chrome and glass. I've also had the same good luck getting old builtups and a couple of unbuilt and unpainted old kits.

The only car I've been unable to snag yet is a '59 Mercury as I keep getting outbid on the many I've tried to get. Patience will win out eventually, or, I'll have to wind up getting a resin kit from Modelhaus down the road.
