Mike Chernecki Posted September 11, 2014 Posted September 11, 2014 Am I missing something, is there a way to secure the Tamiya paint stand to its base. I find if I don't keep an eye on it and push it back down, it will eventually eject the stand and whatever is on the stand at the time.
Mike Chernecki Posted September 11, 2014 Author Posted September 11, 2014 Tape? I thought I lost a piece or Tamiya had some sophisticated locking mechanism. Low tech it is then.
Chillyb1 Posted September 12, 2014 Posted September 12, 2014 You shouldn't need to tape it. I have had mine for years and it has never threatened to fall off of its base. Just push the two parts together firmly.
Mike Chernecki Posted September 12, 2014 Author Posted September 12, 2014 Well, it just fell off again so I pushed on it hard and "click". All good now. I tried the second base, but it won't go down as far, maybe it needs a bit more wear to get down low enough. Curtis Thanks!
unclescott58 Posted September 13, 2014 Posted September 13, 2014 Been using one for about four months now. I've had no problem with mine at all. In fact I'm not sure I understand the problem being described here. I love Tamiya's paint stand. I've never found one better. Scott
blackandwhite Posted September 13, 2014 Posted September 13, 2014 I've had the same thing. I'll have to push the top down onto base every now and again. There's been a few occasions that it's actually popped off while I was moving parts after painting them
Mike Chernecki Posted September 13, 2014 Author Posted September 13, 2014 Well that didn't last long. After the loud "click" and thinking it was finally attached, it popped off again.
SlotDaddy1963 Posted September 13, 2014 Posted September 13, 2014 There's been a few occasions that it's actually popped off. Yeah I had just gotten back into building and a buddy warned me to keep an eye on it because of this. But did I listen? Out back on the grass I had just sprayed a really nice slick second coat of Metallic Purple on my new, wonderful Revell '49 Merc. I was turning it round to check inside the fenders and rocker panels and... Pop!!! I think I'm going to use my cousin's drill press and bore an off-center hole through both pieces and insert a small pin. They should still be able to rotate and still be taken apart for cleaning.
High octane Posted September 13, 2014 Posted September 13, 2014 For those of you who remember, that's why I like to use the old SHABO stand. I've had it for years and it works just like new, only with some paint on it.
crazyjim Posted September 13, 2014 Posted September 13, 2014 Well that didn't last long. After the loud "click" and thinking it was finally attached, it popped off again. Tape will hold it together. Chuck's idea with the pin sounds pretty promising.
unclescott58 Posted September 13, 2014 Posted September 13, 2014 Why would this pop off? Is there some kind of spring in there? I have not tried separating the upper part of the stand from its base. I really haven't figured out a good reason why I would want to do this? Am I missing something here? Scott

I can't figure out what these guys are talking about because my experience with the Tamiya paint stand is unrecognizably different from theirs.
jbwelda Posted September 13, 2014 Posted September 13, 2014 it pops off because it pops off...sooner or later it is going to happen to you. only solution I have found or perhaps its just because it is easy, is to tape the two halves together at their junction. just get some 2" wide masking tape and put a few round around it. end of problem. if you don't do it, it WILL come to bite you in the azz. I am #1 Tamiya supporter but this failing is pretty blatent. it took me two or three times of ruining a paint job to get wise. jb

On the one I have, I see no reason why it should. Did they maybe change this stand somewhere along the line, so it doesn't do this now? Scott
jbwelda Posted September 13, 2014 Posted September 13, 2014 I bought one when it was first introduced to the USA market probably more than 10 years ago so its possible its been updated since then...but from similar reports I don't think it has. right when you've got your best paint job ever...its gonna come apart on you and that paint job will end up in the dirt. jb
tbill Posted September 13, 2014 Posted September 13, 2014 tape and glue was my route. maybe you guys without the issue aren't picking the stand up to check coverage of rocker panels and such? I only say that as when I paint a body, I pick the stand up, and paint bottom to top, thus the stand gets handled a lot, then naturally as the paint is tacking up, I will pick up the stand and check my coverage under a different light source. maybe it's just we are handling it too much?
Mike Chernecki Posted September 13, 2014 Author Posted September 13, 2014 I bought mine earlier this year, so I don't think it has changed.

I have picked mine up too when painting. Again, no problems. This has got me confused. Scott
SlotDaddy1963 Posted September 14, 2014 Posted September 14, 2014 (edited) The inside of the top piece tapers in at the top. You can't really tell by looking. I hope airplane modelers aren't using it because most of their painting is after construction and a four or five foot drop would be catastrophic to them... You know? most of the plane builders I've run into are kinda snobs, so...Nevermind! just joking Edited September 14, 2014 by SlotDaddy1963
mariojr Posted September 14, 2014 Posted September 14, 2014 I think when they turn it upside down then it falls. I've had it happen a few times. So now wen I turn it upside down I just make sure to hold on to both parts
SlotDaddy1963 Posted September 15, 2014 Posted September 15, 2014 In my incident it wasn't upside-down. or even horizontal, although I had turned it upside-down a second before. It came off with a pop, went about 4 inches straight up, then into a nose-dive onto the freshly mown grass. I may be able to get to the drill-press tomorrow afternoon
Foxer Posted February 16, 2015 Posted February 16, 2015 (edited) I like that idea of pinning the Tamiya stand .. or just masking tape I guess. I wonder why THEY didn't correct this flaw in the first place. This is my fix .. sits by itself, rotates with left hand even, holds the body upside down, quick to adjust to any body width and quick attach/detach mechanism (squeeze with hand) Edited February 16, 2015 by Foxer
Quick GMC Posted February 18, 2015 Posted February 18, 2015 Mine pops off as well. I expect it so I keep an eye out for it
