Steve, How did you get the raised emblems on the car to come out so clean? What technique did you use? The model looks kick ass so far sir. !!!!!!

Just the old "foil before the last color coat" technique. Foil your scripts as closely as possible just before your final color coat & then after applying that coat, carefully clean them off with one of those pointed Tamiya q-tips & the appropriate thinner. Then I just clear coat over the whole body. Steve

Looks gorgeous with the foil! Interior looks perfect!

Thanks John! Steve

I was really hoping to be showing off this build by the weekend, but I'm having an un-forseen issue that unfortunately will side line it for a while. You can read about it & possibly offer some corrective solutions in my post in the "Model Building Questions & Answers" section under the heading "Cracking Paint?" In the mean time, I'll continue on with my '60 New Yorker build which I luckily decided to start at the same time as this one. Hopefully, given some time, the Ford will cease with it's "funny business" & I'll be able to get it polished out & finished in relatively short order. Sorry guys! :( Steve

Sorry that happened to your paint. I had it happen once. Sometimes things can be a hard to figure out with paint..

it's a real shame about the paint. I was really looking forward to the finished car. I, like most everyone else, hope you can save it. If not, think of what Thomas Edison said about his experience with inventing the lightbulb. "I have not failed. I've just found 10,000 ways that won't work." - Thomas A. Edison

Thanks guys. I'm relatively confident it can be saved, it's just a matter of letting it set for a couple of weeks & letting it fully cure, & then see if I can polish it out. It's not dead yet, just delayed. Steve

Have you tried contacting Jameston at Scalefinishes.com? I highly recommend him for paint.

For the most part, I've been very happy with MCW for my paint, & I really have my doubts that it's the actual base colors that are the problem anyway. The color coats on this build looked terrific. I'm much more inclined to think it's a Testors clear coat issue. Especially if my hunch is correct & it can be polished out after a time. That would prove to me that the issue doesn't go any deeper than the 3 clear coats. Besides, Scale Finishes goes after more of the "custom" builder market. MCW is all original factory correct colors & a lot more of them than Scale Finishes. For example, Scale Finishes carries roughly 40 Mopar colors. MCW carries around 170, not including any special order colors. Steve

Well, this one's been a real pain, but I think I have the paint issue taken care of for the most part. Not one of my best works but it's good enough for the girls I go with! :) Should be putting on the finishing touches today, so with any luck, it'll be in the history books & "Under Glass" later tonight. The sun is shining in Minnesota today, so if I finish in time, I may even get some outside photos! Steve

So what'd you figure out on the paint?

Looks to me like the likely cause was the final coat of clear going on before the previous one was completely cured. I just let it set for a few weeks until the cracking seemed to cease & then re-polished. Took care of the majority of the problem but I think I'm staying away from Testors "Wet Look Clear" for a while. This issue raised it's ugly head on 2 builds since I started using it. Never seemed to have the problem with the other Testors clear. Steve

Do you think it's the clear on it's own or is it reacting to the MCW paint? I'm very interested as I'm about at this step.

I've painted many kits with MCW paint & Testors # 28139 "Ultra Gloss Clearcoat" with absolutely no problems. It's only since I started using the "Wet Look Clear" that I started having issues. I used it the same way as the ultra gloss which may have been my problem. I'm assuming that the wet look clear may have a little longer cure time & I sprayed subsequent coats after 24 hours & I'm assuming one of the previous coats wasn't totally dry & the top coat dried faster causing the top coat to crack. Just a theory, but it seems as logical as any. I'm just staying away from the wet look clear for a while. The ultra gloss works just as well anyway. Plus I think I'll allow a little more time between clear coats from now on, just to be safe. Steve

Yeah! Ain't that a kick in the head? Usually we don't get this type of weather until at least December. It's gonna be a long winter!! -_- Steve

Not to side track too much, but we just got a dusting here in TN, north of Nashville. Hopefully it doesn't stick around too long but I have a feeling you are right, it's going to be a long winter.

Back on track, sorry to hear about your paint. I hope you fix it just fine and it turns out amazing!

Done deal Justin. Photos are already in "Under Glass". Thanks! Steve
