rsxse240 Posted September 27, 2014 Posted September 27, 2014 well, I just typed a boat load of words on this and that, posted a bunch of pictures, and some witty comentary. and for some reason it didn't post. so here's the short and sweet. Sinful Colors: some kind of weird name for pearl white and a lame stupid name for pearl blue from Walgreens for a buck a bottle Lacquer thinner krylon white primer The paint dries too fast with lacquer thinner, find something else and tell me about it. I shot it at 20 PSI and still got spider webbing, anything higher than that it dries before it hits the body and causes a very rough texture. this particular paint has a very nice reflective pearl. I didn't shoot clear, I might later, I just wanted to see how this paint sprays, now for what you all want to see These were on the table, so I figured I'd see what they looked like.
StevenGuthmiller Posted September 27, 2014 Posted September 27, 2014 (edited) Now this is much more my style! The metallic is much more in scale than Blair's Merc. Very nice colors! Steve Edited September 27, 2014 by StevenGuthmiller
rsxse240 Posted September 27, 2014 Author Posted September 27, 2014 HAHA, Blair, he likes MINE BETTER!!! lol, I'm just kidding. I just want to THANK you, Blair, for giving me the idea of starting a thread for just paint jobs and other projects that will likely never be finished.
Custom Mike Posted September 27, 2014 Posted September 27, 2014 (edited) Ken, how much thinner are you using, that may be your issue, I thin my nail polishes 50/50, and adjust as needed to get it about the same consistency as 2% milk. Now shoot some Clear on that body, it'll look incredible! BTW, what was the name on the Blue, I've gotta get some of that color! I've used Sinful Colors nail polishes for years with no spider-webbing, and I use a cheap lacquer thinner from Lowe's, shot through a Testor's external-mix airbrush at around 35 psi. I've even used their Pearl White (Tokyo Pearl), which I think is the best Pearl White you can find! Edited September 27, 2014 by Custom Mike
impcon Posted September 27, 2014 Posted September 27, 2014 That blue with the pearl white is gorgeous!!! I agree that you should clear those colours to bring them to a glossy finish and add some real depth to them. Try using the same primer that you used on the Ford on a piece of sheet styrene and then shooting some of the colours on a piece. Use a large enough are so that you can mask some of the color as it came out of your gun off and then clear the rest. You may be amazed and very pleased with the results. I am a "stocker" - I like the factory stock look and colors, but your choices of that blue and white here are totally off the charts in my eyes!!! You may find that a well applied but not overly heavy extra coat or two of clear may add even more depth to the colours and change the tone noticeably. I'd suggest several test shootings to see what happens. I'd just love to get my hands on a couple of bottles of that blue and the white as well.. Unfortunately, we have no Walgreen's anywhere near us.
bpletcher55 Posted September 27, 2014 Posted September 27, 2014 wow, KEN , did not see that coming ,[HAHA, Blair, he likes MINE BETTER!!! ] , i,m glad you are having fun ,thats what makes this hobby so great !
tabsscale1 Posted September 27, 2014 Posted September 27, 2014 Nice looking in those colors!! To me it sounds like the paint isn't thinned enough. I get the strings on HOK paint if it isn't thinned enough . It also acts like it is drying to fast if there isn't enough thinner.
rsxse240 Posted September 27, 2014 Author Posted September 27, 2014 (edited) Thank you all for your replies! I will shoot some clear on it. Right now I have an abundance of Model Master Colors by Boyd Ultra High Gloss, I just don't think I want to shoot it on white (it tends to yellow a little bit). I may just go get some Sinful Clear. As for how much I reduced it. I mixed 50/50 and then a little more. The webbing wasn't bad and it cleaned up well enough. I am wondering if maybe my compressor is putting more moisture into my air than the dryer can remove. It has been quite humid lately. The blue is called Love Nails and the white.......Tokyo Pearl. I WILL be getting more of the pearl white. They also have a hardener which I may try out. I think there is also a leveling additive. As for having a Walgreens, they also sell it at Walmart. I think they're produced by Maybeline, so I'm sure you can find a source. I am also sure you can get it on ebay. Edited September 27, 2014 by rsxse240
tabsscale1 Posted September 27, 2014 Posted September 27, 2014 Get some Model master wet look clear. It is a good clear. Haven't had it yellow on me yet.
rsxse240 Posted September 27, 2014 Author Posted September 27, 2014 Blair, Fun is what it's all about. I don't build race cars because I don't want to hear people tell me it's not correct. that's not fun. I am really glad you saw the humor in it. Todd, I've not looked at the wet look clear. Is it part of the Lacquer line up? I've been very satisfied with the Boyd stuff and I know how to get a great shine from it. I guess it's time for me to try some new tricks. I think I'm going to set some pork ribs in some marinade for some delicious BBQ tonight.

Mike Chernecki Posted September 29, 2014 Posted September 29, 2014 The paint looks great. If you want a slow lacquer thinner try Mr. Hobby Color Leveling Paint Thinner. I had trouble trying to find a good thinner for touchup lacquers from paintscratch.com, it was always drying too fast. I tried the Color Leveling thinner and the paint stayed sticky wet for a while after spraying, finally leveling out to a wet look shine. I tried it with a nail polish with similar results. This week I will finally be spraying a 1956 Nomad using these thinners, did a bunch of test sprays until now.
Tonioseven Posted September 29, 2014 Posted September 29, 2014 Sinful Colors is one of my go-to brands. That Ford looks great by the way!!
