mopar_guy1 Posted January 6, 2015 Posted January 6, 2015 Thanks Dan! Well I got up a little late this morning but met today's goal of getting the window motor area and the voltage regulator sanded down and off of the other kit's firewall. Cleaned 'em up for the most part and will me mounting them soon and playing around with matching the original firewall color. I'll probably paint the whole engine compartment over so I can re-do the detail painting. We start with cutting out the general area here: Then sanding this down to where the needed items will glue onto the firewall without sticking out a half mile. I switched over to a file set up because it was alot easier. After about a half hour of patient and careful sanding here's the result. A voltage regulator and wiper motor assy / area that I can adhere right on to the firewall. Now for the paint........................................ Would'nt it be simpler to replace the whole firewall..?
taaron76 Posted January 6, 2015 Posted January 6, 2015 All you Mopar guys want to make me build one. Lol Tim
mustang1989 Posted January 6, 2015 Author Posted January 6, 2015 (edited) Would'nt it be simpler to replace the whole firewall..? I thought of doing that but honestly this process only took little more than a half hour and I'm used to graphing stuff in to places on aircraft anyways so it's not a big deal to me. I have the mindset of doing whatever it takes and here it seemed to work perfect for me. It would have been a lot simpler if Monogram would have actually put stuff on the firewall. Although I did find out after I did this that the Revell AAR Cuda firewall just drops right in! lol (Next time I'll know.) Edited January 6, 2015 by mustang1989
mustang1989 Posted January 6, 2015 Author Posted January 6, 2015 All you Mopar guys want to make me build one. Lol Tim Go for it Tim!!!
taaron76 Posted January 6, 2015 Posted January 6, 2015 I think it'd be easier if we just bought these models already put together. Lol. I'm not being a jerk at all, but modifying these builds to China and back are what makes them so fun and addicting. To each their own, I guess, but as long as you enjoy what you are building, that's what counts. Tim
mustang1989 Posted January 6, 2015 Author Posted January 6, 2015 You got it brutha Tim! I do enjoy what I do as it's therapy for me. .....and I enjoy being here with birds of a feather!
1/24DragAndStreetCars Posted January 7, 2015 Posted January 7, 2015 Hey joe, i saw the coolest trick the other day, this guy took two of this kit's engines and made a DOHC 340, and put it in a T/A like this one for a one-of-none type of car
mustang1989 Posted January 7, 2015 Author Posted January 7, 2015 That sounds wild there Joseph! Pics?
freakshow12 Posted January 7, 2015 Posted January 7, 2015 I would like to see this too as the 340 isn't an overhead cam engine to start with
mustang1989 Posted January 7, 2015 Author Posted January 7, 2015 No real updates for today picture wise. I did, however, work on the master cylinder a little bit, sanded all the seams down on the original radiator(these were friggin' terrible) , touched up the battery painting and started painting the battery cables. Movin' a little slow this morning. I have nocturnal doggies and they got me up at 2 a.m. yesterday. Feelin' a little worn down here................
taaron76 Posted January 7, 2015 Posted January 7, 2015 I have nocturnal doggies and they got me up at 2 a.m. yesterday. Feelin' a little worn down here................ Nyquil man. lol I don't know how you do it with your dogs. We have a 6 month old baby girl and she sleeps better than your dogs. lol Do you have a doggy door? Tim
mustang1989 Posted January 7, 2015 Author Posted January 7, 2015 That would be a good idea and my red heeler would use it but Sweet Pea (Pee), my 17 year old miniature Dachshund is just too stupid to use it. lol (It aint the age either! She's always been a little )
taaron76 Posted January 7, 2015 Posted January 7, 2015 She is old school... sounds like she likes the man to open the door for her. lol
mustang1989 Posted January 7, 2015 Author Posted January 7, 2015 I'll go with that option. I would like to think she aint that stupid. lol
mustang1989 Posted January 8, 2015 Author Posted January 8, 2015 Still working on clean up issues with the radiator and touch up paint in the engine bay area. I do have 2 questions though. 1.) Does anybody have an engine firewall picture without the engine installed that's got the wire harness routed correctly on the firewall and fenders? It's obvious that things have been moved around and relocated on this one here: and 2.) I'm getting to the point to where I'm going to start on the undercarriage fairly soon and had a color question for you all. I've built plenty of aircraft and the original resources are rare and there's a lot left to interpretation and hoping that museums got it right but here in the automotive world I'm finding there is a ton of reference photos and a ton of variances in restoration colors and details. Is the undercarriage color on the bottom of the E bodies black or does it look more like this? If this is correct then that's fine but if it's off from O.E.M. pics would be appreciated. Thanks in advance, Joe
landman Posted January 8, 2015 Posted January 8, 2015 Hey Joe, For info on "Correctness" there is no better resource than the auto clubs. Try this one for starters http://www.chryslerclub.org/ . Or this one: https://www.facebook.com/EBodyMoparClubOfAmerica
mustang1989 Posted January 8, 2015 Author Posted January 8, 2015 I'll be looking at that Pat. Thanks man! I'll have to look at the face book end of it later on because of "big brother " watching here at work.
freakshow12 Posted January 8, 2015 Posted January 8, 2015 Typically mopars are dark grey primer underneath then have body color overspray from the sides in. Rear wheel wells sometimes blacked out sometimes not. Rear springs were cosmoline coated. Which is a greyish gold. Here is my cuda
freakshow12 Posted January 8, 2015 Posted January 8, 2015 Some of the finishes vary from car to car based on production variances. Mopar stuff is famous for that.
taaron76 Posted January 8, 2015 Posted January 8, 2015 (edited) Hope these help, Joe. http://www.angelfire.com/pa3/68imperialcrown/1970challenger.html Edited January 8, 2015 by taaron76
mustang1989 Posted January 8, 2015 Author Posted January 8, 2015 Thanks Tim and Fred! Dangit! I'm gonna have to rob a horn from another kit! lol
JTRACING Posted January 9, 2015 Posted January 9, 2015 Thanks Tim and Fred! Dangit! I'm gonna have to rob a horn from another kit! lol The 68 or 69 charger kit has the horn that can work on this car
mustang1989 Posted January 9, 2015 Author Posted January 9, 2015 (edited) Lemme check the "deep freeze" stash and see what I've got......I know I don't have a Charger but I'll poke around a bit and see. Thanks anyway James! Edited January 9, 2015 by mustang1989
mustang1989 Posted January 9, 2015 Author Posted January 9, 2015 After sniffin' around in the garage stash I finally found a horn in one of my old Monogram Mustang kits, cut it from the core support, cleaned it up and primer coated it. After that I moved on to the tires to finish them up. I mixed up some MM Flat Acrylic coat cut with 70% ISO and shot the tire sides. I've never been keen on that glossy Armor All tire shine so the result was perfect for me. Here are before and after results with one of the tires: and finally all four tires and wheels....
