chunkypeanutbutter Posted April 24, 2015 Posted April 24, 2015 (edited) Seems I may abandon the trailer unless I locate some more springs... As for the Scout, much progress was achieved today. All in, I think I spent 5 hours at the bench just working on this and this alone. Mounted the engine; painted the rear end; rust powdered everything in the engine bay except the battery, and powdered the underside, as well; added license plate to the rear, and painted the number light; painted the tail lights (no lenses, they were lost long ago; decided to paint the spaces silver and then Tamiya Clear Red them); finished the exhaust and the "legal cheater" (explain with pictures tomorrow); made a cloth top, modeled in a folded-down position; installed driver's and passenger's seats; did embossing powder carpet in black; painted dashboard details; made a steering column and used what I believe is a '49 Ford steering wheel; made a longreach shifter with pistol-grip; installed trailer electrical connector; painted, decaled, and installed battery on scratchbuilt tray; installed radiator with electric fans; made upper hose and started on making lower hose; drilled out the headlights and dented the grille, then put it in the PPond; made a paint can and big beverage cooler for the bed, and started on a bowling trophy, of all things. So, I guess I did a little modeling work today. Edited April 24, 2015 by chunkypeanutbutter
chunkypeanutbutter Posted April 24, 2015 Posted April 24, 2015 Never question me. Here, you can see the exhaust dumps straight from the headers downwards. The muffler is what I call the "legal cheater," just so a cop could see you have a muffler. Works unless he crawls underneath... Battery is from the Tamiya Lotus Super Seven, and the brake booster is from the Revell '94 Impala. The cloth top is a pocket from a pair of jeans, no less. The left seat is from a Camaro, and the right one is from an Ertl International rig. The Maine license plate (gotta represent Maine in the Cannonball) is from Gofer. So, I guess it did happen.
chunkypeanutbutter Posted April 24, 2015 Posted April 24, 2015 I just noticed something... The trailer electrical connector is gone. Where'd it go? I'll find it tomorrow; I have stupid YouTube videos to watch.
Belugawrx Posted April 24, 2015 Posted April 24, 2015 Nice work Miles Knew we could get 'em out a ya Cheers
christian-w Posted April 24, 2015 Posted April 24, 2015 (edited) Great affords! Like the rabbit - the exhaust is pretty good made! The International Scout has an awesome good effect! Looks really good. My Mini goes on the finish line: exhaust is done, interior is fitted, body painted and has the glasses/windows. Only the engine and the axles to do. Thinking that the axles are the main problem Edited April 24, 2015 by christian-w
JTalmage Posted April 24, 2015 Posted April 24, 2015 Wow thats coming along well! I havent touched any of my kits for the cannonball
Tom Geiger Posted April 24, 2015 Posted April 24, 2015 Miles, you mentioned you needed a hood and grill... looks like you found the grill. I do have a parts kit of the Scout and have a hood for you. Also for your trailer, I have parts boxes of the '50, '53 and '55 Ford pickups, and '50, '55-57 Chevy pickups. PM me with what you need and I'd be happy to mail it to ya! Also, per your top... I've made those from wide masking tape. Testors Dullcote will take away the stick-um completely. Then you have a nice scale piece to work with...
TheEnd Posted April 25, 2015 Posted April 25, 2015 (edited) Made a bit of progress on the Rabbit. Scratched up the external wastegate and plumbed it to the manifold. Scratched up the down pipe and plumbed the external wastegate to it as well. I didn't have enough room for the turbo to have a straight outlet so I added a 90 degree outlet which is fairly common. I will be adding more detail to the turbo soon, mostly getting everything roughed in. I also added the cam hump to the valve cover as well as the oil fill port. I added an alternator and scratched up a bracket for it. I wanted to check clearance, and then realized my intake manifold went directly into the brake master. I didn't expect the master to be so far inward and so low. I cut out a section of the frame for the charge pipe coming out of the turbo. The charge pipe will be larger than the turbo diameter so it will fill out the hole. Naturally this meant I had to redo the manifold. No big deal. I fabbed up a boxed intake. These are pretty common on turbo cars. Each intake runner looks like a velocity stack inside the boxed section. I roughed up the throttle body as well. It looks close due to the angle but there is actually a bit of space between the throttle body and the master. While I was at it I scratched up an Optima battery. It was sitting on the alignment tabs for the kit battery. Once I cut the tabs off the battery clears the hood no problem. Will make a tie down later on. I also got started on the interior. I'm planning for it to be completely stock besides a boost and air fuel gauge mounted discreetly in the lower console. No racing seats or roll bars in this Rabbit. Started by putting down some Desert Yellow paint and sprinkling on some embossing powder. I let the paint dry and spread on a second layer of paint and embossing powder. I then airbrushed the interior with the same Desert Yellow paint. I only got one coat on it so far. I need to touch up some areas with more embossing powder and then respray it. Close up shot of the carpet. I'm happy with the results. I'll need to sand out the powder in a couple spots on the deck lid. No matter how much I wipe it down I always miss at least one or two specks where it matters. And that's all I have for now. The exterior color will be a lighter tan than the interior which seemed to be a popular color scheme. Should hopefully look like a boring old Rabbit. Edited April 25, 2015 by TheEnd
chunkypeanutbutter Posted April 25, 2015 Posted April 25, 2015 (edited) That engine... s'byoutiful. Edited April 25, 2015 by chunkypeanutbutter
chunkypeanutbutter Posted April 26, 2015 Posted April 26, 2015 More work... Decided I needed something to disguise the engine a little in front: it showed through the gap between the body and frame. Made a tube bumper out of a straw and some scrap, and a winch out of a lighter wheel, and some scrap bits. Not the most accurate, but good enough of a representation to please me. And this is the controller for said winch, to mount to the dash after a little more painting.
knarf Posted April 27, 2015 Posted April 27, 2015 still haven't started mine yet, but i did score some decals for it so it'll be soon
Guest Posted April 28, 2015 Posted April 28, 2015 I added an alternator and scratched up a bracket for it. I wanted to check clearance, and then realized my intake manifold went directly into the brake master. I didn't expect the master to be so far inward and so low. . Nice work on the engine and turbo! I ran into the same problem with my Escort. I cut the master cylinder loose and filled in the hole. After I get the engine in, I'll glue the master cylinder where I need it to be. To me, the location on both yours and mine look wrong. I think the master cylinder should be closer to the inner fender. I haven't checked any engine bay photos of the real Euro Escort to see where the master cylinder should be. I haven't come up with many photos of the real car period. I got my Escort in paint (Tamiya Light Gun Metal and Testors Dull Coat). It has the exact look I was after. Although, I may shoot another coat of dull coat over it after I paint in the trim. It looks shinier in the photo than it is in person. It could be the lights shining on it. I'm thinking I'll go sans roll cage or at most, a simple four point.
DeeCee Posted April 30, 2015 Posted April 30, 2015 (edited) 40 Ford Testosterossa, Finally got my head around how the suspension might work, Engine is now suspended, so to speak, front trailing arm goes to the solid axle tube, and the rear arm goes to the hydraulic mounted coil over set up, which is attached to the engine. Front is Ferrari bits, modified, with F1 style inboard shocks. And the stance is sorted. knarf Posted May 1, 2015 Posted May 1, 2015 got my decals today, but as you can see they are a wee bit small so on to plan B,C or D
chunkypeanutbutter Posted May 1, 2015 Posted May 1, 2015 I like the size of those... Maybe cant them on a slope, add some more around them...
knarf Posted May 1, 2015 Posted May 1, 2015 (edited) I like the size of those... Maybe cant them on a slope, add some more around them... appreciate the opinion. alas, i don't have anything else really to go with the eyeballing some NASCAR sponsor decals Edited May 1, 2015 by knarf
Belugawrx Posted May 1, 2015 Posted May 1, 2015 Some old school pinstriping,,. scroll work, would be cool
knarf Posted May 1, 2015 Posted May 1, 2015 Some old school pinstriping,,. scroll work, would be cool hadn't thought about, thanks
MeatMan Posted May 1, 2015 Posted May 1, 2015 That Ford is baaad! As for the truck, I like the decals and the idea of embellishing them with some pinstriping. I'd hate for them not t be used.
chunkypeanutbutter Posted May 1, 2015 Posted May 1, 2015 Lotsa work has been done! Thanks, Tom, for the hood, tire, and extras! Sorry about the steelies. Couldn't find them, so I used the other wheels. Need to paint the scripts today; got a new fine-tip paint marker just for it. Need to paint the badge on back with some black. Nearly there....
