Tony_B Posted December 30, 2014 Posted December 30, 2014 Morning all, Given I'm new to the forums, etc. maybe this has been discussed already, but being a librarian and nerd by trade, I'm always fascinated by the 1:1 information on the models I've started building. Google Books, given that they've digitized ALL of the Popular Mechanics magazines has now become my primary resource tool. Just ran across this a few moments ago: (apologies for the ugly url) https://books.google.com/books?id=g9QDAAAAMBAJ&lpg=PA202&dq=%22AMT%22%20model%20cars%20%22popular%20mechanics%22&pg=PA88#v=onepage&q=%22AMT%22%20model%20cars%20%22popular%20mechanics%22&f=false Now if I could just find a model and skills to be able to pull this off!!! By the way, if you check the article out, I thought it was interesting that AMT had a research division....but maybe that was just because of their involvement with the manufacturers back then? --Tony PS: For you Chevy fans, check this one out: http://images.google.com/hosted/life/70c055dab06086d6.html
pharoah Posted December 30, 2014 Posted December 30, 2014 Hey Tony, I had thought about doing that to an AMT 58 Impala. Never had the nerve to do it though. The closest I got was cutting an Earnhardt Lumina body in half and putting it on the whole chassis. The body was warped anyway.
unclescott58 Posted December 30, 2014 Posted December 30, 2014 Fun article on splitting the '67 Impala. Thanks. Scott
1930fordpickup Posted December 30, 2014 Posted December 30, 2014 If you look all the way through the mag you will be surprised at what they did then.
Tony_B Posted December 30, 2014 Author Posted December 30, 2014 It really is amazing...I just wish Google would digitize Car Life....I've been looking for that one for a looooonnnggg time....
ChrisBcritter Posted December 30, 2014 Posted December 30, 2014 Allen Funt did it first:   Start with a Heller Renault 4CV and a razor saw...

jbwelda Posted December 30, 2014 Posted December 30, 2014 you know, I never really liked letting the facts get in the way of a good story if you see my point. jb
Ace-Garageguy Posted December 31, 2014 Posted December 31, 2014 you know, I never really liked letting the facts get in the way of a good story... jb Or an opinion. Just kidding, good naturedly...couldn't resist.
Ace-Garageguy Posted December 31, 2014 Posted December 31, 2014 Tony, welcome to the forum. I didn't know back issues of PM were available, so thanks for the heads-up. Lots of fascinating stuff there. I'm heartily impressed, in general, with the amount of old and historic information that has been made available on the web. To get good results, of course, it's still necessary to know something about your chosen topic beforehand, but that goes for any kind of research...as you would well know. Critical-thinking skills and broad general knowledge are also very helpful in winnowing out the kernels of fact from the tons of garbage, and I believe they're more important now than ever. The ability of anyone, no matter how misguided, to upload "information" to the net (as opposed to the old days when it took effort and bucks to publish hard-copy material) makes it necessary to keep the BS sensor updated. I'd love to see all the old car mags available in their entirety too, as I try to make my models historically accurate and representative technically of a particular time in history. My own hard-copy library is good, but there's a lot more info I'd like to have access to than I'll ever possibly own. Maybe someday. Once again, welcome.
Tony_B Posted December 31, 2014 Author Posted December 31, 2014 Morning everyone! I meant to respond last night, but as usual over the holidays, been battling a cold! Neat YouTube stuff....I spent hours this morning on that...it's funny, lots of younger folks today take all this stuff for granted...I remember hoarding old Hot Rod magazines that I would find a flea markets, figuring I would never see them again....and now I can even find them on the net. Good stuff. Thanks for the welcome Ace, everyone. I've been trying to soak everything up that I can off these forums...appreciate it! Speaking of this, has anyone seen this: http://www.themodelcarmuseum.org/index.html. Looks like they are digitizing a bunch of magazines...maybe they will make these accessible...
