B-Ram Posted December 30, 2014 Posted December 30, 2014 Hi Guys, Alright, starting my next adventure. It's going to be a 53 Studebaker Bonneville salt flats racer. I am starting out with the AMT Mr Speed reissue. It is going to be highly modified. Chopped roof, front end will hinge forward. Not sure what I will use for a power plant, it will most likely be a after market product. I have gotten the roof chopped and glued into place. Bill
B-Ram Posted December 30, 2014 Author Posted December 30, 2014 Don't know what happened to some of the pictures in my first post my first post. So I will post it again. Bill
Belugawrx Posted December 30, 2014 Posted December 30, 2014 Nice start Looks like you have 2(two) engines to choose from! lol Cheers
B-Ram Posted December 30, 2014 Author Posted December 30, 2014 Thanks Bruce, I think I will use a engine from Gibson Engines and salt flats wheel discs from Parts by Parks. They have both of these at Model Roundup. Bill
Ace-Garageguy Posted December 30, 2014 Posted December 30, 2014 (edited) Nice project. I love Bonneville cars, lakes cars, etc. Important part of hot-rodding history, and kinda the last bastion of the hard-core-individualist racers. Edited December 30, 2014 by Ace-Garageguy
B-Ram Posted December 30, 2014 Author Posted December 30, 2014 Hi Bill, I have always liked the salt flats racers too. I remember when I was a kid in the 60's, it seemed like all of the car magazines spent a lot of time at Bonneville. It seemed like there was a lot of action at the salt flats during that time. Bill
oldscool Posted January 1, 2015 Posted January 1, 2015 Great work and I hope the chop turns out that well on mine.
B-Ram Posted January 1, 2015 Author Posted January 1, 2015 Hi Gerald, Thanks, The chop was pretty easy. I just cut along the marks on the insides of the roof post, sanded the cuts straight and glued the chopped roof into place. Bill
935k3 Posted January 1, 2015 Posted January 1, 2015 Does this kit give you a set of windows for the chopped top?
B-Ram Posted January 1, 2015 Author Posted January 1, 2015 The kit comes with 2 chopped windows. Clear and blue tint. Bill
B-Ram Posted January 1, 2015 Author Posted January 1, 2015 Hey All, Before I cut off the front end, I am going to make the hood scoop. Bill
oldscool Posted January 1, 2015 Posted January 1, 2015 Hi Gerald, Thanks, The chop was pretty easy. I just cut along the marks on the insides of the roof post, sanded the cuts straight and glued the chopped roof into place. Bill How do the windows fit?
B-Ram Posted January 1, 2015 Author Posted January 1, 2015 The windows fit pretty good. I taped the blue windows in to get a look. The only part that needs work is the angle at the front roof posts. You can see it best from the front view. Bill
TFchronos Posted January 1, 2015 Posted January 1, 2015 Cool project, looking forward to seeing more!
B-Ram Posted January 1, 2015 Author Posted January 1, 2015 OK, I have gotten the hood scoop mostly finished. Just needs a little more fitting and some putty. I will glue it on after I cut off the front end. Bill
B-Ram Posted January 1, 2015 Author Posted January 1, 2015 The scoop came from the AMT 66 Nova pro street. Bill
Custom10 Posted January 2, 2015 Posted January 2, 2015 That's a nice start. Can't wait to see more progress.
B-Ram Posted January 3, 2015 Author Posted January 3, 2015 Alright, I got the front end separated from the body. Now it's time to run to the hobby shop to get some styrene. Bill
B-Ram Posted January 3, 2015 Author Posted January 3, 2015 If anyone has any questions or suggestions please let me know. I am making this up as I go. Right now I am shaving off everything, door handles, windsheid wipers, V8 emblems. I am going to do a lot of filling. What is a good filler. I have seen everything from white hobby putty to Bondo. Thanks, Bill

Thanks, Bill Here's a link to the story of probably the most famous of the Bonneville Studebakers. http://www.hotrod.com/cars/featured/1953-studebaker-coupe/ Here's another link, to a tech tutorial on making hinges for a flip-front-end that fits right every time. http://www.modelcarsmag.com/forums/index.php?showtopic=70025 And as far as filler goes, you can't go wrong with Bondo Professional glazing putty, #801. It comes with its own hardener, in modeler-friendly packaging. Here's a link to a current project of mine, and you can see that it works very well (post #36) http://www.modelcarsmag.com/forums/index.php?showtopic=96942#entry1324599 Edited January 3, 2015 by Ace-Garageguy
B-Ram Posted January 4, 2015 Author Posted January 4, 2015 Hi Bill, Thanks for the tip. I will try the bondo. I am building my Studebaker similar to the 2006 Purple Sage Trading Post Studebaker. Here is their link. http://www.purplesagetradingpost.com/. This is a great looking Studebaker. If this one turns out good, I plan to build one like the Purple Sage Studebaker. Bill
B-Ram Posted January 4, 2015 Author Posted January 4, 2015 Hi All, Does anyone know if anybody makes Bonneville Salt Flats type of decal numbers. Thanks, Bill
cobraman Posted January 4, 2015 Posted January 4, 2015 You have my interest. Just got this kit today ( had it before years ago ) and also plan to do it salt lake style.
