1972coronet Posted January 5, 2015 Posted January 5, 2015 Am I one of the handful of folks who actually enjoys ( make that prefers ) side 1 of In-A-Gadda-Da-Vida ? To wit :
southpier Posted January 5, 2015 Posted January 5, 2015 I have to say: "yup". but that was the holy grail of garage bands everywhere in '68 ('69?)
doctor phillips Posted January 5, 2015 Posted January 5, 2015 (edited) I used to drive my parents nuts with that album...You want another great Iron Butterfly song? Check out "Soul Experience"... it's on YouTube. Edited January 5, 2015 by doctor phillips
Ramfins59 Posted January 5, 2015 Posted January 5, 2015 Wow man... I haven't heard that in sooooo long. I so remember playing along with In A Gadda Da Vida on my Bass back then.
Craig Irwin Posted January 5, 2015 Posted January 5, 2015 No, you aren't alone. Off the top of my head I also remember "Are You Happy", "Termination", and "flowers an Beads".
1972coronet Posted January 6, 2015 Author Posted January 6, 2015 No, you aren't alone. Off the top of my head I also remember "Are You Happy", "Termination", and "flowers an Beads". That's the one . I feel that the musicianship is better on side 1 (though the percussion on the title track is tough to beat !). Early Heavy Metal is so interesting ; it's a great combo of psychedellic and macabre .

Monty Posted January 6, 2015 Posted January 6, 2015 My older brother had an 8-track of that album & I think I played it more than he did. I tried to like some of the later albums, but... Does anyone else remember their last bassist, Phil Kramer? This guy had an amazing brain. IIRC, he left the band to pursue aerospace engineering & did some work for the defense industry but ultimately was found dead in his van in a canyon near Malibu. As I understand it, the death has never officially been solved.
Tom Geiger Posted January 6, 2015 Posted January 6, 2015 I bought that album in the US Army PX in Italy back around 1971. I still have it! That Simpsons version is hilarious! Should be posted in the cover song thread!
tim boyd Posted January 11, 2015 Posted January 11, 2015 John...count me in. I had the eight track back in 1969/70....which of course gave up the ghost many years ago....so I got the CD also many (now) years ago...maybe I need to dig it out and play it again! TIM
Tom Geiger Posted January 11, 2015 Posted January 11, 2015 John...count me in. I had the eight track back in 1969/70.... Tim- Do you still mentally hear the track changes on albums you had on eight track? I still hear them on the Yes album!

Every time I hear Neil Diamond's "Love on the Rocks " ( Jazz Singer soundtrack ) , I still "hear" the track-change !
gtx6970 Posted January 16, 2015 Posted January 16, 2015 There's another side???!!!! Funny, Thats my exact thought when I read the post
Lunajammer Posted January 17, 2015 Posted January 17, 2015 (edited) I saw them perform live maybe 15 years ago at an outdoor concert. During this song, some hopped up fan ran on stage, then jumped spread eagle into the crowd to body surf. In true Fargo fashion, everybody cowered back and the kid face planted to the ground in a puff of dust. Edited January 17, 2015 by Lunajammer
Harry P. Posted January 17, 2015 Posted January 17, 2015 True story: when I was a little kid, this album was huge! My friends and I played on a pickup soccer team (yeah, we were way ahead of our time! ).... Anyhow, one Saturday morning we were all supposed to meet up in the park for practice. All of us were there, waiting for the last guy to show. We waited and waited, and finally one of the guys said he'd run over to José's house (we all called him "Hosie" and he didn't mind) and go get him, as we all lived on the block right next to the park. A few minutes later our volunteer comes jogging back and tells us that Hosie was listening to Iron Butterfly and would be right with us... as soon as "In a Gadda da Vida" was over! Absolutely true story! One of my favorite childhood memories to this day!
