Sixx Posted January 6, 2015 Posted January 6, 2015 Does anybody else have this happen to them? Every winter mine split crack sometimes bleed & hurt like hell ! I've tried all types of lotions & creams...nothing works. My wife makes natural soaps & lotions using all sorts of oils. Well, not motor oil ! Lol ! So tonight I'm soaking my hands in shay butter, coconut oil, bouaboa oil, and some other exotic oil. I slather it on & put some soft cotton gloves on over night. I hope it works!! What do you guys do for your messed up hands???????
Harry P. Posted January 7, 2015 Posted January 7, 2015 A lot of people have that problem, especially in winter when it tends to be dry indoors. Using moisturizer and sleeping with gloves on sounds like a good idea. Also use moisturizer on your hands several times a day.
chunkypeanutbutter Posted January 7, 2015 Posted January 7, 2015 From what I see on TV, this stuff might work. I haven't tried it myself.
chunkypeanutbutter Posted January 7, 2015 Posted January 7, 2015 (edited) Use super glue to seal them shut. Really. I do that with cuts. Much simpler than Band-Aids. Edited January 7, 2015 by chunkypeanutbutter
Old Buckaroo Posted January 7, 2015 Posted January 7, 2015 Bag Balm found at feed stores and super glue to seal the offending splits / cracks.
Harry P. Posted January 7, 2015 Posted January 7, 2015 Super glue was actually invented to seal incisions instead of stitching them shut. Just an interesting factoid...

High octane Posted January 7, 2015 Posted January 7, 2015 I have that problem as well and use O'Keefe's Working Hands crème. It helps to some extent, and sometimes I have to use a triple antibiotic crème on the affected area and keep it taped up.
Casey Posted January 7, 2015 Posted January 7, 2015 Try putting latex or nitrile gloves on instead, so the gloves don't absorb the lotion. The gloves will keep the moisture against your hands, too.
cobraman Posted January 7, 2015 Posted January 7, 2015 That used to happen to me when I lived in Chicago. I used a lotion called Cornhuskers I think it was. Worked for me. Don't know if it's still around. The superglue thing does work.

The gloves will keep the moisture against your hands, too. That's exactly what I do . For open sores : Neosporin [sp?] or Vaseline . Dry , itchy skin : Gold Bond Foot Cream . Why specifically "foot" cream ? It absorbs quicker , and there's no greasy coating left behind .

Chillyb1 Posted January 7, 2015 Posted January 7, 2015 Use super glue to seal them shut. Really. I was going to recommend the same thing. Use a moisturizing lotion several times a day and seal crack with flexible super glue (I use Gorilla brand). Super glue was actually invented to seal incisions instead of stitching them shut. Just an interesting factoid... This is not true. It was invented to serve as a method of making lenses for weapons quickly and cheaply because we, for some unknown reason, were not able to buy them from the Germans. Later it was used to seal wounds until better treatment was available.

Harry P. Posted January 7, 2015 Posted January 7, 2015 This is not true. It was invented to serve as a method of making lenses for weapons quickly and cheaply because we, for some unknown reason, were not able to buy them from the Germans. Later it was used to seal wounds until better treatment was available. I looked it up. You're right... "super glue" was invented when scientists at Eastman Kodak were trying to come up with a new, extra-clear plastic material to be used in gun sights. But it didn't work for that purpose and the formula was put on the shelf. Years later, the formula was again tried as a basis for making airplane canopies, but again it didn't work for that purpose. But they did find that it made a great glue! Soon they thought about the use of their glue to hold human tissue together, and in 1964 Eastman submitted a patent application for their glue to be used for medical purposes (to seal wounds). The glue was used in Vietnam to seal soldier's wounds.
mikemodeler Posted January 7, 2015 Posted January 7, 2015 Lived in the Chicago area for 40+ years and suffered from this problem, especially when I worked in dealerships and my hands were exposed to the cold dry air, grease and water. Best thing I found was to soak my hands in warm water and then apply some udder cream. Didn't have latex gloves to put on back in the early 80's but wish I had, would have saved me a ton of pain and suffering. If you are working outside or exposed to cold air/weather, wear latex gloves if you can to keep the exposure to a minimum. Most auto parts stores have them readily available and I know NAPA has them on sale this month.
MsDano85gt Posted January 7, 2015 Posted January 7, 2015 2nds on Bag balm, Udderly smooth, theres also badger balm in a small green tin..... I have done the white cotton glove (michael Jackson style) with any of the afore mentioned balms / creams, or good ol vasaline..... what don't have white cotton gloves you say...... slather vasaline one your hands and slide em into some old socks your getting ready to throw out.... works wonders you can also get little finger cots ( look like mini condoms Literaly) you can put neosporin or any ointment on the fingertips and use a cot works well I'm allergic to latex tho so i try not to do that method too much........
my80malibu Posted January 7, 2015 Posted January 7, 2015 I worked for a company called Safety Kleen, in my youth. We had a brand of allied products, one was a hand cleaner in a large metal can. Each can contained 1 full bottle of Corhuskers lotion mixed in. They had a patent on that for quite awhile. It was a fantastic product, and worked excellent.
Ace-Garageguy Posted January 7, 2015 Posted January 7, 2015 Another product I HIGHLY recommend is Invisible Glove. I've used it for many years, it really works, and even keeps grease and dirt from getting in your fingerprints and under your nails. It's non-greasy after it's applied, and washes off with soap and water (taking all the grime with it). It also seems to contain skin conditioners. I've been working outside a lot this winter, and by this time I usually have painful splits somewhere. Not so far this year (My outside winter work is usually not car / mechanical, so I usually don't use the Invisible Glove. This year, I've been doing heavy engine work outside, and have been using the IG to deal with grease getting ground into my hands.)
LDO Posted January 7, 2015 Posted January 7, 2015 I wear a glove with vaseline in it, to keep one hand soft for my wife.
