JJER Posted February 6, 2015 Posted February 6, 2015 Any advice on what the best clear coat is for painting over Model Masters flat black enamel ? Thanks.
Snake45 Posted February 6, 2015 Posted February 6, 2015 What are you trying to achieve? Are you trying to gloss the black, or flatten it more, or protect the flatness, or what exactly?
JJER Posted February 6, 2015 Author Posted February 6, 2015 Yes Snake. I am trying to gloss the flat black. JR
Miatatom Posted February 6, 2015 Posted February 6, 2015 If you're spraying out of the can, many recommend Tamiya TS-13 clear. If you've got an airbrush, you can spray Pledge Complete Floor Care or as it's called by here on the forum, Future.
StevenGuthmiller Posted February 6, 2015 Posted February 6, 2015 Testors clear lacquer will achieve that goal, but it will take several coats. Testors clear enamel will do the job as well but will take a couple of months to cure afterwards. Steve
Ramfins59 Posted February 6, 2015 Posted February 6, 2015 I've had good results doing this, but, I used Duplicolor Flat Black Primer covered with Duplicolor Clearcoat.
Mike_G Posted February 6, 2015 Posted February 6, 2015 I would not recommend using TS-13 over any enamel until you've done some testing.
JJER Posted February 7, 2015 Author Posted February 7, 2015 Thanks all above for your replies. Appreciated. JR
JJER Posted February 7, 2015 Author Posted February 7, 2015 @ Pim. Trying for a different look. Thanx.
JJER Posted February 7, 2015 Author Posted February 7, 2015 @ Lone Wolf. Either way. I can decant and airbrush.
angelo7 Posted February 8, 2015 Posted February 8, 2015 why don't you just use semi gloss or gloss back I tried that myself and I personally find gloss black hard to apply. I always got tiny bubbles. Flat black is a lot easier to work with. I clear coat now flat blacks with Testors High Gloss Clear.
LoneWolf15 Posted February 8, 2015 Posted February 8, 2015 Well , Testors clear top coat will fit the bill . Cut it at a two parts clear to one part cheap laquer thinner ( hardware store variety ) ratio . Continuos mist coat until you have a smooth , glass like finish . Flashout - 2 to 3 days . I've found that Testors semi gloss black works even better as a base coat than the flat .....
StevenGuthmiller Posted February 8, 2015 Posted February 8, 2015 Nice thing about using Testors clear lacquer is that it will give you varying degrees of a satin finish with each successive coat, getting a little glossier as you add coats. if you're looking for a satin type finish it works great.
