Hello, Guys.... I have a build in mind using the soon to be released '57 T-Bird big scale kit. I would love to have some specific parts for this project, but it seems the only way to get them would be have them printed. I am wanting chrome reverse wheels, appletons, and lake pipes for a mild custom in 1/16.... Would it be possible to find files of these things in a smaller scale and have them sized up? Who would I contact about making files if none exist?

Just kinda thinking aloud and brainstorming right now, but it would be very cool to be able to get these parts. I maybe could scratch up some lake pipes, and possibly the spot lights, but the wheels would need to be printed, I guess.......

Thanks for any help!

You might be able to come up with wheels that you could either coat with Allclad or send out to be chromed. The T Bird kit might even come with steel wheels that you could send out for chroming. I do know that the 1/16 AMT '64 Mustang and some of the '55-'57 Chevys they did come with steel wheels.

I think some of the 1/16 Chevy kits came with side pipes, or something that looks like Lakes Pipes.

Check the T Bird kit for spotlights, I'm not too familiar with those kits, but it does seem that that series of kits came with a few custom parts - for all I know, there might be a set in that kit.

Look on eBay for 1/16 parts- sometimes, you see somebody parting out some of the AMT kits, as either they take a new one and part it out like they do with the 1/25 kits, or, they have a 1/16 kit that is started or has a crushed body, and they try to wring out some value with the parts.

I look at 3D parts on Shapeways all the time...especially for 1/16 cars, as there are few options for aftermarket parts for these kits. I'm just suggesting the kit pats option because the 3D parts tend to be sort of pricey, and sometimes they are less than ideal.

Those are good suggestions, Man. I'm not really familiar with the accessories in the larger kits, this will be my first big scale auto. I did notice that one of the Minicraft hot rod kits come with chrome steel wheels and whitewalls, I might try looking for a set of them........

Thank you! I know that some of the AMT kits in that series came with plastic whitewall overlays for the tires. I might even have an extra set if you need them, but check the contents of the T Bird kit- I think they came with some of the things you are looking for. I'm pretty sure that the T birds came with steel wheels, too- as I have a set of the hubcaps from one of the T Bird kits, and like the Chevys and the Mustang, they were designed to install over the steel wheels in those kits.

On the wheels, the original kit has a set of deep set dish-slotted wheels. The reissue may have these wheels so all you would need is some plan wheel centers. Just cutout the center section and add the wheel lug pattern centers in their place.

If you find a part on Shapeways that you want but is not 1/16th, contact the maker and see if he will scale it to the size you need.

If you can find a part on Shapeways you're doing a lot better than I can. I typed 1/25 model car parts into the search bar, and got over 1200 pages of every kind of part of every scale you can imagine, and very few were really model car parts. Their parts look good, but their website stinks!

I find it better to Google using site:shapeways.com 1/24 "what I am looking for"

So site:shapeways.com 1/24 LSX engine

TJ the 1/16 57 Thunderbird does have steel wheels in the kit as of the last release. I am sure the ones before also did. I have a couple different releases of this kit. I think tires are the biggest drawback for me when it comes to the larger scale. Just so few options.

Thanks for all the responses, guys.... I've ordered the 1/16 Firebird so I can see how a large scale kit builds. It will be my first, then I'll order the Thunderbird next...... The plan is to use the aluminum slots on the T/A and find something custom for the T-Bird.

3Dscaleparts does have some nice stuff, I'll probably try to get some wheels from them.......
