Plowboy Posted June 22, 2022 Share Posted June 22, 2022 The '69 GTX has the same issues as the '68 Road Runner. I came up with a fairly simple method for fixing the issues on the '69 GTX. But, I didn't take photos of the process as it was a test run for the '68 Road Runner. Here's some progress photos. These were before I fixed the reveal on the front fenders and the vent glass. Here's a couple after paint. When I get to the Road Runner, I'll take photos of the process. Daryl Romain Posted August 13, 2022 Share Posted August 13, 2022 (edited) This subject has been tackled before. Allow me to add my two cents. I've owned both (1/1), a '69 GTX and Roadrunner. Imho there are a couple of noticeable, but correctable differences. The rear wheelwell is too small, and improperly shaped. Cure? I stick a piece of tape on a JoHan wheelwell, peel it off, stick it on the Amt body and use it a pattern to cut. An Mpc Dodge wheelwell, or a Monogram wheelwell will work also. The Monogram has a larger opening, good if you are putting bigger (taller) tires on your build. The 'peak' on top of the quarter is too far forward. Judicious filing and sanding, and maybe a skim coat of putty should move it to where it belongs, centered over the wheelwell. I attempted to do that here, on my Amt '68 Roadrunner. I first sanded away the reveal on the quarters. Sanded the hump at the base of C pillars down. Reworked the bottom of the quarter window. Puttied the top of the quarters to add some height. Cut the bottom of the quarters and added a .040 shim. Made a new reveal with .010 rod and putty. Reshaped the wheel openings and put the trim back. Cut across the trunk and stuck a .040 shim in the middle and filled the remaining back in. New vent window frames. New reveal on front fenders. Lot easier to explain with photos. Very detailed list, thanks for taking the time, although I don't necessarily understand what you're talking about in some cases. If you can compare the AMT body to an original JoHan--the '69 Road Runner is probably easiest to find, being the last one reissued--many of the problems in the back half of the car become more apparent. A proper fix is a lot of work, as you describe. Next one I build, I'm just gonna adjust the shape at the lower edge of the quarter windows, reshape the rear wheel openings, and call it good to go.
