Hello Pierre - I forgot to mention that when I bought the kit many years ago I also bought Dave Friedman's book - Corvette Grandsport. In the book there are many photos of the #4 running both with open and taped over louvers which is the way I always intending building my model as I prefer the look

The Lotus Cortina has arrived from the UK.   I will attempt to turn this into a reasonable representation of the #59 that Jimmy Clark and Ray Parsons drove to second place in class in the '64 Sebring race.

I've never worked with a resin kit so this should be interesting.  For that matter, most of my builds have been pretty much straight out of the box so trying to do a reasonable representation of an historic race car is going to be something new and different.  I will appreciate any and all advice as the build proceeds.  I've also never done a build in progress online....oh yeah, jumped right in the deep end.?

We'll start with some pictures of what came in the box.  It's a curbside so we've got a body, chassis, and some bags of parts to flesh it out and make it real.

Andrew, that kit looks very nice. Sharp casting for sure. No doubt it will be a great foundation for Jim Clark's ride.

Think about it, Jim Clark, F1 world champion, driving a saloon in an endurance race. You think Lewis or Max would do this?

One of the things I loved about that period in racing was that it wasn't uncommon for drivers to be in F1 one weekend ,driving a sports car in the Targa Florio the next weekend or racing a saloon car in an endurance race.  A time when drivers were still allowed to be human beings rather than marketing devices.

Andrew - Looks like you have a very a very good kit to base your Clark Lotus Cortina. If you had not claimed that entry I was going to base a build on parts I purchased from Gerry Chevalier the original Mini Exotic guy. I also bought his white metal Lotus/Ford DOHC engine and the required Italeri Escort kit for the rolling chassis. All together probably a $140CAN investment. I will build it eventually as the Lotus Cortina is on my list of all time favourites.

Phil - just want to be sure you know that Team Lotus had a second Cortina entered  -  for Mike Spence. -  it was a no show - but it was entered - so it counts - would like to see you do it w the engine - just sayin …

Andrew - this looks like a good choice for a first resin ….  Clean up the flash and throw on a coat of primer - now you can find all of the other casting flaws - then sanding sticks - some more primer - pay close attn to the trim and fit of the “glass”…  and think about adding Mr Clark - in or out of the car ….  And the kit should come w a roll cage - if it doesnt - that would be a good addition …

Speaking of spoons - the blister behind the rear wheel appears to have been a Pete Brock aero trick to direct air behind the fender and then out the crescent shaped openings in the tail - to keep the tail planted at speed ??  Maybe it didnt work - none of the following Daytona Coupes had this feature - and 2287 lost its blisters - when ? - after its Bonneville trials  - maybe before or when Phil Spector aquired it - so even though the Simeone car is preserved - or unrestored - it is not as raced in ‘64 - thats okay …

Also - have to remove as much of the fender flares as i can w/out losing the shape of the wheel arch - 2287 had no flares - another unique feature of this car …

The blisters were riveted

onto the fenders - so once everyting is sanded to an acceptable shape - ill drill the rivet holes and place some rivets …

Andy, that's a lot of work but it is taking shape nicely. I couldn't figure out what these blisters were because they do not seem to be on the car today at the Simeone museum. Doing a bit of searching I found this picture from Sebring and now I get it. Sharing it here because it appears the color was quite different from what it is today. Seems like the same silver blue color as the roadsters.

Thats one of the best color shots - afx researched this and posted a link to a site that states that the Shelby team painted their cars Viking blue in ‘64 - before agreeing to a color change in ‘65 at Ford’s request - when i get the Zero paints Viking blue ill post a sample and we’ll see …

Published as a softback in ‘94 - this book by Friedman is still the best source of color shots of the ‘64 season - think it is still available ….  Lots of good shots of the Viking blue team cars at Sebring - no shoulder belts are visible - think all the team cars used lap belts - Pierre gets this right on #1 …

Bob Breslauer’s Scale Hardware produced .05 rivets in brass and nickel - stocks are limited now - they will soon be unobtanium - but 2287 is a worthy project for my last stocks ….  There are some others that are gettable now - but the price point is not so good …

I could not see shoulder belts on the few ref pics of my entry pictures so I took an educated guess to leave them out. 

I thought the blue mix I formulated was perhaps on the light side...but perhaps not light enough after all...

Brilliant stuff. I've tried to find these rivets but they are always out of stock. My fall back has been the glue on stuff from Wave. If you have shaky hands forget it...

And Archer made very good decal sheets - Woody has just closed the storefront side of his site - but the sheets will be available fr some on line sellers that have stock … and Micro Mark sells some sheets too …

Hiro Boy zipped me some Zero Paints - DHL - expensive but nearly the speed of light - here’s the Viking blue - what do you think ??

i think the color is very accurate - but im a little unsure - the metallic is a bit overscale ??  Always a problem the metallic finishes in scale … i think it will look great from 3 feet away but maybe not great in close inspection …. ???
