absmiami Posted May 10, 2023 Posted May 10, 2023 Well - this one has been “under glass” for a while - in fact its been in the Model Car Museum in Salt Lake City - its the GSL winner from 1983 - and its builder is Dave Berry of Michigan …. David came to the final GSL and this baby was on the non-compete display table - i remember seeing it in the mags decades ago - david was kind enough to give me a run-down - and consented to this post … ill post a few more pix later …. Its a model that heavily influenced me … and yeah, its really really really good … 2
Rich Chernosky Posted May 10, 2023 Posted May 10, 2023 Andy...as a big F-1 and Indy fan I can really appreciate this one. It appears to be a heavily re-worked AMT kit. (correct me if I am wrong ) And considering it was done in 1983 before a lot of the new advancements in paint and casting, it is even more amazing. Of course we would like to know more sooooo...I will wait patiently.
absmiami Posted May 11, 2023 Author Posted May 11, 2023 RC is correct - Berry started with a few kit parts and replaced most of the others with brass components for strength and accuracy - including the suspension fr and rear … and its finished with an epoxy based paint that looks great 40 yrs later …
absmiami Posted May 11, 2023 Author Posted May 11, 2023 It was a real treat to get a guided tour of this build by the builder- it was the first competition subject to win GSL - over hot rods or customs - but as Scale Master knows - not the last. …
Rich Chernosky Posted May 11, 2023 Posted May 11, 2023 All I can say is ...WOW...that is truly impressive. Thanks for the update and detail pictures.
TonyK Posted May 11, 2023 Posted May 11, 2023 Excellent looking model! I remember building this kit and it wasn't good. All the added effort he did created a very nice car from a crappy base.
absmiami Posted May 11, 2023 Author Posted May 11, 2023 More than a nice build - winning the GSL IN 83 - it was still a relatively small affair - but the competition was still fierce …
absmiami Posted May 11, 2023 Author Posted May 11, 2023 And by the way - ill try to convince Dave to show this at a couple of GSLs - be brought it home fr the museum because his grand kids wanted to see it - thats cool!
absmiami Posted May 11, 2023 Author Posted May 11, 2023 I meant NNL's - not GSLs - no more of those ...
