STYRENE WITHDRAWAL SYNDROME (S.W.S)

Recommended Posts

What everybody needs here is a Plan B. When the forum is down, I simply kick back, relax, take a chill pill and play Warcraft until the shakes and tremors start again. Kinda silly though to stop playing every 10 minutes to check to see if the sites back up.........

I guess I could work on a model, but that's just crazy talk.

That just about CRACKED me up! The shakes and tremors, the talking to yourself, the fumbling and stumbling about . . . sure . . . i can see it. Based on your AVATAR picture, it's a wonder you could hardly move about!

Do you think the cops could make an exception for a 13 year old to drive then?

Carpool! You aren't the only modeler what lives in the Hoosier state... B)

Dr. Cranky, As science has yet to produce a styrene-scented or flavored Methodone, I've been loathe to face styrene withdrawl on my own...

I went several weeks here recently without building, because of a neck (disk) injury that's caused my right hand to lose much of its dexterity and feeling. Basically, it has all the nimbleness and feeling of a benchvise! I went three weeks away from the desk and 'bout went out of me everlovin' mind! I found, through necessity, if I keep my right thumbnail a little longer than usual, I can hold small parts between it and my middle finger and sand or trim or do whatever I need to them. I can hold them, I just can't feel them... If I'm careful and keep a close eye on where my rt. hand is and what it's doing, I'm ok... Haven't cut myself yet... Lucky for me I'm a lefty. My Doc knows what's up, we're just waiting for a specialist that takes my type of insurance... Then we'll get it fixed.

I just about lost it while the forum was down today I needed a fix for you guys bad. I would have went to the bench and worked on one of my six projects I got going but I need more eye candy for four of them Cause I have what I call Artist block cause I can't decide how I want to paint them up. But to kind of calm my shakes down a bit I went and scowered the internet for aftermarket suppliers, resin casters, and whatever else I could find relating to models. But it wasn't the same as being here with you guys. Oh and as for the other two projects one is waiting for the green light for the build contest and the other is awating funds to get the parts I need to finish it. I want to go to a big model show at least once in my life. I was in a little local show put on by a hobby shop thats gone out of buisness. It was the first time I ever entered a show and to my surprise I took third place in the street class. I lost the original model put I plan on remaking it. It had alot of firsts for me on that model. Anyway glad the forum is back so I can get my styrene fix.

If the forum is down for a day or so, I'm generally fine. All I really need to build is my Pandora.

What keeps me building, keeps me motivated, is this forum. So I would seriosuly miss it if it were gone. The social aspect of this hobby (thanks to Mr. Gore and his internet) is something I thoroughly enjoy. If it was still a solo hobby I doubt I would build as much.............or so well. I've learned a lot from everyone.

George, your point is well taken, but personally I try to balance building with participation on the forum. In other words, I like to take small breaks from the bench and put some time into the forum. But yes, I think if you are spending all your time on the forum and not building (there's nothing wrong with that), you might want to schedule in more bench time.

BUILDING + SHARING = STYRENE BLISS! :lol::DB):rolleyes:

If I may Doc,I would like to throw out there the other side of your SWS,this is'nt a knock, bad rap or calling out to nobody on this forum, but have any of you ever stop and think that we spend too much time on the computer and not enough time at the bench. My question I guess will be how much time to you devote to the workbench on average for the week and how much time do you spend on the computer or the forum for that matter on average for the week.My guess is the latter(computer) is going to blow the bench away as the amount of time spent.Unless I have something to show or ask or just give my 2 cents worth then I'll jump on the computer the rest of my time is at the bench. For example: if I had 6 hours a day to spend to do what I would like at least 4 hours would be at the bench and the last 2 would be for surfing the net, check out some 1:1 car show pics or some model car show pics and that would be in that order. My bench comes first, too much time in front of the monitor does'nt get anything done on my bench and Lord knows by all the models I have not built yet that I need all the workbench I can handle.Just would like to know everyone's thought and again this is not a calling out to nobody so please don't take it that way. Peace

I could not agree more. To me, as far as building models goes, the internet, (& any forums I visit on it), is for reference, research, to get advice &/or information, or to give advice/information. Perhaps that's why I'm not a good fit here. If I want social interaction combined with my hobby, I'll go spend time at my hobby shop, or in the model club I'm a member of. If I wanted online social interaction, I'd join Facebook or some variant. I've never joined Facebook et al because I prefer real life interaction with people as opposed to the artificiality of online. If I want to know how my grown children or my siblings are doing, I'll call or visit them. I don't have the need or desire to plaster every single aspect of my life all over the internet for people I don't know to see.

It does seem that many here need that social "fix" that they feel is provided here. Nothing wrong with that, but it would most certainly detract from my bench time, which is more important to me. It seems, (& not based on this forum), that too many people are letting social media replace having a life, & that's not only sad, it's very unhealthy.

Don't worry, I'm going to get my point across and I'm leaving.

But I still can't figure it out; Why are you here only to complain about the place? I never see you post any builds, you're only here to complain.

You're always against all the fights and all, but, personally, I think you're intentionally trying to start them.

I missed the Forum for a while and concluded I had done something terribly wrong to my computer. What a relief when it came back up on the screen! This is a recent addiction of mine and at the time I like it better then email, Facebook or anything else I have found. Keep it coming! I still have never posted any of my models, that's the next step maybe.

Speaking of IGNORE, I had a hard time trying to figure out what I was missing until Andy posted the quote.

It's easy to hang around and malign, put down, disrespect, and generally be a negative force in what I think it's one of the most positive, energized, and inspired forums on the planet when it comes to the imagination and creativity.

It's also very easy to start trouble on every thread, but I think the majority of the people here are getting wise to the tactics. Harry (as I am sure many other moderators have said it too!) has said it: if you don't like it here or are not getting your money's or intellect's worth, then go else where.

How many threads on this forum haven't started with a wonderful focus on the model car building hobby subject matter, and suddenly things turn for the worse and the moderators have no choice but to lock it down to the detriment of everyone else? It's been happening more often than not.

I for one refuse to let the few spoil a good thing for the many.

All right, my friends--see my other post about HELPING CREATE A STRONGER CREATIVE ATMOSPHERE on this forum.

Let's refocus on the subject matter at hand.

Case in point, the Holidays are around the corner and lots of family--which is fine with me--but I always feel like I'd like to keep an hour or so during these hectic days to squeeze in some bench time.

Of course, when that doesn't happen, then the SWS starts to build up! :o:angry:

One of the biggest frustrations for me is to be on vacation and not be able to build or do any model related activities, and the worse thing I can do is be on the road where I'm constantly looking out for eye candy.

For example, I find something like this: and I can't help but think of a million and three ideas on what I would love to build next:

I've not been here for very long, but, I really enjoy coming in here to look at the build and the finished projects, plus, I also like the general chit chat & banter, whether it has anything to do with the hobby or not...

As Andy C mentioned, the only posts I seem to see of yours are negative & hostile, for me, the Internet is now my life, it's my only way of being able to communicate with friends, to see the world etc, so why you bother coming here I do not know, but please, don't be so nasty with your comments...
