Erik Smith Posted November 11, 2012 Posted November 11, 2012 Super Tire Thread - Good tires and Where to Find Them. I get frustrated by the lack of accurate and/or attractive tires supplied with kits. I am not overjoyed to do so, but I will buy kits just for the tires. So, this leads me to my thread... I would like to get a thread going showing kits (and the tires) with what you consider are the best tires available. This can include factory stock, custom, pro-touring - whatever you fancy. **Please** - DO NOT POST WITHOUT PHOTOS OF THE TIRES AND THE KIT INFORMATION. I would like to keep the thread relatively concise and provide pictures and sources. Let's keep personal communications to PMs to limit the amount of gleaning required to obtain information.
Erik Smith Posted November 11, 2012 Author Posted November 11, 2012 I'll even start the show: From this kit:
mikemodeler Posted November 12, 2012 Posted November 12, 2012 I agree that the tires in the 69 442 are nice and someone started a thread on submitting a message to Round2 to see if they will consider offering those tires in a multi pac like the recent slicks.
Monty Posted November 12, 2012 Posted November 12, 2012 I agree that the tires in the 69 442 are nice and someone started a thread on submitting a message to Round2 to see if they will consider offering those tires in a multi pac like the recent slicks. That was my thread, and I'm asking all modelers who're interested in obtaining more of these tires to send Round2 a brief, friendly message saying that you'd like them to make the new Ployglas GTs available separately like they did with their new pad-printed slicks and whitewalls. Here's a link to the contact point: http://www.modelcars...47
Erik Smith Posted November 12, 2012 Author Posted November 12, 2012 More tires AMT parts pack Firestone Deluxe Champion tires Back side of tires have print too!! Very nice. These are readily available and look like this: These ones are more expensive than the AMT Racemaster slicks, but still, you get two sets for the price of a discounted kit and they take up less shelf space!
Erik Smith Posted November 12, 2012 Author Posted November 12, 2012 These tires are okay - decent whitewalls (quality varies by kit) - good for late 50s early 60s stuff. But, the big bonus in this kit: It's difficult to photograph decal sheets, but that's a decal for Good Year Polyglas F70-14s. COPO Camaro anyone? The tires and decals can be found here:
Erik Smith Posted November 12, 2012 Author Posted November 12, 2012 (edited) Great pair of M&H Racemaster slicks (10.50x15): Find them here: Edited November 12, 2012 by Erik Smith
Erik Smith Posted November 12, 2012 Author Posted November 12, 2012 Good old days. These are the ubiquitous Revell tires, but in the days of old they actually had sidewall detail - and decent, looks-in-scale sidewall detail. I like them. Good Year Blue Streak Sports Car Specials: Mine were in this kit, although many others had them. Now, they are in a lot of kits but the sidewalls are blank.
TooOld Posted December 23, 2012 Posted December 23, 2012 Great topic Erik ! How about a set of Mickey Thompson " Cheater Slicks " ! I know they are in these two kits , and maybe a couple more .
Jantrix Posted December 23, 2012 Posted December 23, 2012 I found some nice big n little tires with white wall inserts in the Revell '29 Ford Pickup kit.
Erik Smith Posted December 23, 2012 Author Posted December 23, 2012 Modelhaus T-197 Modelhaus T-426 And from the recent King Cobra Slicks And two whitewalls
von Zipper Posted December 23, 2012 Posted December 23, 2012 I like the Suburbanite snow tires from the Hogans Hero Jeep kit.
NormL Posted February 2, 2013 Posted February 2, 2013 Erik, let me re-post here and I will re-direct people from my thread, unless Harry wants to just delete it. These four are from Pegasus.... #1277 http://pegasushobbie...oduct_info.html"Hella's" Chrome 24.5mm OD 20.3mm ID 11.4mm wide #1601 Tires S02's 225/50-16 26.0mm OD 19.1mm ID 11.7mm wide #1603 Tires Pilots 245/45-18 27.7mm OD 20.5mm ID 13.0mm wide. Note these are not showing on their website any longer They are out of stock and having issues with re-stock #2305 http://pegasushobbie...oduct_info.html"Holli's" 23" Chrome 28.5mm OD, 23.35mm ID, 12.35mm wide
Draggon Posted February 8, 2013 Posted February 8, 2013 An FYI on the new Pegasus wheels and tires. The tires on the soverigns are smaller than the chromes and crossbars. Bernard Kron found out that there is a "big and little" Chrome reverse set, but we dont know the part # yet. I put the soverign littles on a chrome reverse, and it looks great. Also the bigger tires found on the crossbars look better on the "soverign astros". Is that to much info?
Brett Barrow Posted April 12, 2013 Posted April 12, 2013 I don't have them on hand either, but I can tell you from experience that they're narrower than the Pegasus Pilots. Probably in the 225/50-17" or 18" range.
Brett Barrow Posted April 12, 2013 Posted April 12, 2013 (edited) The Lindberg 64 Belvedere and Dodge 330 have some decent blackwall versions of the Goodyear Super Cushion like those shown in the PM/Revell '58 'Vette. A little wider than the PM/Revell tire and without the tampo whitewall. Makes a neat period-correct bias-ply tire for mid-sixties sleeper Super Stocks, plus you can white wall or white stripe them as well. Cool tire if you just gotta have your stuff on bias plys. (I prefer scale radials - they ride better ) Here's a shot showing them (right) along with the PM tire (left), and an old MPC version (center) of the same tire (original photo credit Stu Neil from TRak in Scale). Edsel-Dan Posted April 23, 2013 Posted April 23, 2013 I found the AT Wrangler tires from the SnapFast Dodge in the AMT F-150 '92-'96 Flareside shortbox and '97 Styleside longbox pickup kits too. '95 Styleside Longbox does not have them. It is possible they are in other AMT/MPC pickup kits too.
zenrat Posted April 24, 2013 Posted April 24, 2013 It is possible they are in other AMT/MPC pickup kits too. They are also in the AMT '96 Chevy Blazer. They make great rears for nostalgia rods if you shave the lettering off.
rasafyff Posted May 5, 2013 Posted May 5, 2013 Goodyear Custom Nylon tires from original issue Revell '55 Chevy: These tires which are 6.40 x 15 can also be found in the Beatnik Bandit. Combine them with the tires from Revell's Ed Roth 1956 Ford Pickup which are 8.20 x 15 for a nice big and little tire set.
mk11 Posted May 5, 2013 Posted May 5, 2013 (edited) You've seen good, here's inaccurately molded and butt ugly... Edited May 5, 2013 by mk11
Brett Barrow Posted May 5, 2013 Posted May 5, 2013 Except for the poor depiction of the tread, the AMT Firestone Super Sports Wide Ovals aren't that bad. It's just that the real deals are so ugly -
mk11 Posted May 5, 2013 Posted May 5, 2013 Should have done more research on those Firestones; assumed the lettering was molded wrong way out. Other than that, I like the tires. The rally gt and t/a tires are what I was referring to as ugly, they're the first tires I ever immediately threw out upon opening a kit. And continue to do so... mike

The rally gt and t/a tires are what I was referring to as ugly, they're the first tires I ever immediately threw out upon opening a kit. And continue to do so... mike The whitewall groove is a little too close to the outer edge of the tire, too. Lots of folks thought the lettering was upside-down when they first came out. These were factory tires or day-two upgrades on lots of cars from around 67/68. They should have done the more normal later RWL Wide Ovals, that would have made a better choice, IMHO.
Brett Barrow Posted May 5, 2013 Posted May 5, 2013 Actually Brett, The white line [possibly red line?] is correct for some . Note the tire at the top left of this ad. They did have the line further out on the tire than most, but I think they're still a little off, I'd say if the white line was located just inside of where it is on the AMT tire it'd be dead-on. Maybe like 1 scale inch. I have some painted up with white letters and white walls around here somewhere, I'll snap a pic when I get the chance. They're just ugly 1:1 tires, if you ask me. Somewhere I have a vintage pic of a really cool "day-two" Chevelle wearing a set of them in white red line (oops, misremembered!) and white letter that I've always wanted to replicate, I'll see if I can dig that up too, but I think it's on my work computer. found it -
