I use a Q-tip too ,but I use the ones with the paper type stick and cut it at an angle to get it down around the trim and little details .It is hard to rub through BMF.
You could use straight pins for the bars .
Ron Parks (from Parts from Parks) built a car with a scratch built tractor grill and seat back in the 80's .I wish I had a picture of it !!!!

I was thinking of making a temp. gauge hood ornament for mine . I think that might look good.
Your grill still looks cool ,I have to do that again someday
