Just FYI...here's a build thread by a guy who apparently put a lot of effort into it.

    http://www.alexkung1.com/scale/am/index.htm

I can't personally vouch for the accuracy of anything he says, but I've seen so much bad-mouthing of this kit over the eons, it can't hurt to look.  :D

I had a conversation with the late Tom West back when the kit was released and asked about the problems with it, to which he replied that the kit was perfect, but, the guys at Accurate had messed it up. He drew up the instruction illustrations and handed them over with very specific assembly steps, but, the guy who ended up putting the instruction sheets together put the out of sequence! So yes, you will have problems if you use the kit instructions as is. But, he also said that they had fixed them and you could request, back then, a new set of instructions.

He also said they had goofed on some of the specs on the A/N lines and some did not fit that well in the end. So the kit was not really that perfect after all.

I myself have yet to tackle an Accurate kit, but this is looking very inspiring!

I think I found instructions on drastic plastics and those pieces were pretty janky looking anyways, it wasn't too hard to make my own better versions. Probably the hardest part of the conversion is cutting out all the front inner fenderwells to get it to sit like that

Now that you mention it, I think I might have the instructions somewhere in my stash, I need to take a look.

The Studebaker has not been reissued as the funny car version.  The stock Studebaker has been reissued, as has the Piranha.  The body-to-chassis connecting pieces unique to the funny car would have to be fabricated.

I am surprised that those pieces where not accidentally left on the trees of the stude kit. But then again, I have never really looked.

The Surf Wagon MSRP was the same $45 price.  Which proves a point I've always said around here, the MSRP is meaningless, nobody is paying that price.  You paid about half the MSRP, and now it's at Ollie's for $9 soooo...

Yeah, sadly no Ollie's around here. Our LHS had them for $42 and I said no, then found them at Walmart for the lower price. They never made it to Hobby Lobby

I felt like the cowl lettering needed something to bring it out. I mixed some Humbrol gold and brass to brush over the lettering. It's not perfect, but it looks pretty good to the naked eye. I needed to do the lettering for my traditional tribute to my dad, "Conrad's Engine Service". Had I realized the cowl was so badly going to need highlighting, I would have done its lettering in the same manner as the Conrad's. Both are Baveuse, or, as I like to call it "The Archer Font". For the engine panels, I printed two sets of black outlined lettering on clear film. Once they were painted and clear-coated, I painted two of them with the gold mixture from the cowl lettering. I applied them to the panels, then applied the second set of outline-only decals atop them, much like old Fred Cady decals were done.

I then attached the windscreen. You can see the five rivets that are holding it on. I used plastic model RR rivets, pushed the through previously-drilled holes, then mushroomed them on the inside of the cowl, with a butane lighter. Uh, yeah. Hey, well, no guts, no glory! No problem! I'll add some more, for appearance. I should be able to mount the body panels before too long. I just want to ponder, first, to make sure all the stuff that needs to happen, beforehand, happens. One of those things is a helmet pad/bar. I'd like to get the body mounted, then the tires and wheels, and just build the top of the motor, in place.
