AMT ' 70 Torino Cobra update 12/28
smellyfatdude replied to smellyfatdude's topic in WIP: Model Cars
Got the foil done, finally. All that's left to do on the body is darken the panel lines, and install the glass. Hopefully, I get this wrapped up by years end. Merry xmas, to all who celebrate it! -
AMT ' 70 Torino Cobra update 12/28
smellyfatdude replied to smellyfatdude's topic in WIP: Model Cars
So now, the body has been polished and shined. Just needs foil, which will come next. The black flocking has been added to the interior floor, the rear end has been painted, and the mufflers adorned with aluminum bmf. Finally, the engine has been built. It's not really accurate, but does look nice detailed a bit and with all the xtra chrome. The last shot is the stock wheel, and one of the mags from the kit. Both are adorned with a tire from the AMT ' 69 Cutlass reissue. I'm leaning towards detailing the factory wheels, and slapping ' em on. -
AMT ' 70 Torino Cobra update 12/28
smellyfatdude replied to smellyfatdude's topic in WIP: Model Cars
Got a bit more done today, including finishing painting the interior. Just need to flock, then detail everything. The body didn't seem to be resonating any strong odor after twenty four hours in front of a fan, so I applied the Tamiya TS-13 clear coats, Super smooth, man I love this stuff! Should need only a wet polish with 8000 and 12000 micromesh in a few days, then microgloss and some love. -
I got this kit by mistake, since what I bought from a seller on ebay was a ' 71 Torino. He goofed and sent this instead, and since it's mint and untouched I figured, ehh, might as well keep it. If I had been looking to build a ' 70, I think I'd probably choose the Monogram Pro Modeller kit. But this one's here and hey, two metal axles and four screws to put it together. Even I can't screw that up. The paint is Duplicolor Bright Calypso, and I don't like the blackout hood, so I painted this one. Interior is painted flat white, and the console and rear shelf have to be made black, yet. There will also be black flocking added to the floor. I sprayed the chassis with Krylon flat black. I might use the stock rims, or not. I'll definitely use the wide Goodyears in the kit, however. I'll add some clear to the body, once the paint has gassed out a few days.

Don't know what you'd be worried about. Your love of those old Fords shows up every time you build one. No exception in this case, either.

Thank you for all the nice comments, everyone. It was time to put it in to a display case, but I thought I'd grab a quick shot with another red Galaxie I have sitting around.
-
And a few more.

Finally finished this today, after taking my sweet time. I broke one of the original wheel covers, trying to pry it in to those too small tires. Ehh, live and learn, so I simply switched gears. One of the reference cars I saved photos of had some delicious 5 spoke rims, so I dug out the ones from the AMT ' 53 Stude kit, put some flat clear on the spokes and used them. The kit had a dash mounted rear view mirror, so I grabbed one from a ' 71 Hemi Cuda kit. Everything else it outta the box.

The interior is finished, finally. I added foil to the seats and panels for the silver piping, and foiled and painted as much of the other details as I could. That's Testors dark red over the embossing powder/flocking. A little bit more work should wrap this one.
-
Here's a quick mockup I did, after having to retouch some of the paint and clearcoat again. The tires are from the AMT ' 61 Galaxie re-issue. And here's a couple shots of the body, all foiled.

'64 Galaxie lightweight......a 30 year old build

That's a beaut! -
Thanks, slusher. The interior is painted, now. Just needs a light misting of clear in a day or so.
-
Here's the white base coat on the interior, and the chassis all decorated. I left the promo style engraving of all the cars features 100% intact. Next, mask the interior portions that will remain white, and spray the red. Yesterday,I picked up some Testors Dark Red to do the flocking.

Lol, well nothing else has been accomplished. But here's another shot, with a little more subdued lighting. I think it shows off the true color a bit better. And yes, that is the uptop you see in the box. Before final assembly, I may just take some shots with the uptop, first. I already trimmed and sanded where necessary, so there's a good fit on the windshield frame. The interior will be red/white. And I'm going to put a dab of glue on those axles, this time. No more rolling off the hood of the car, while I'm trying to take pics!

A recent acquisition. Primed and sealed. Painted, w/Duplicolor Victory Red, after foiling the Sunliner scripts and G-A-L-A-X-I-E lettering. I'll let it gas out, then try the Tamiya clear on the hood . . . . . . . . . . . . . (crossing fingers)

Except for the color, that's exactly how I'd like to do one of these. I have the kit as well, and it's already missing it's engine. Yours looks terrific! Meanwhile, I'll race you, he.

Awesomew job, Randy! The ' 74's were beautiful, with that tasteful tail light re-do and before the wrap around back window. They still looked like a muscle car, and yours certainly does!
-
Again thanks everybody, I appreciate it! Here's a shot of my black and blue Ambassadors, together.

Thank you everyone, and cobraman I agree. That's why it was especially nice to build this as a street machine. These cars are beautifully suited for that, looks and performance wise. Plus it breaks up the monotony of Chevy, Ford, Chevy, Ford, Dodge quite nicely.

Finished this morning, enjoy!

It's all finished. I'll post some pics in UG, a bit later.

I'm surprised to see this pop up again, so I thought I'd share the scoop. I had two paint failures with this build, prior to the Pacific Blue. The first was Tamiya black, which I burned through when polishing. The second was Krylon flat Pistachio. Went on great, but then the clear coat cracked all to hell. As it turned out, Pacific Blue was the closest I had to be able to replicate this ' 53, which I found for sale online. I only wish Moebius would've included a set of those tasty wire wheels.

Flash forward. Just a couple quick shots showing what it looks like on wheels. I shall have to reposition the radiator in the support, to get more clearance because of the longer engine pieces. A minor surgical alteration, had to do the same on my ' 67. Body/chassis fit is excellent, btw. Gotta stop here for today, but it should be wrapped up in the next day or two. And yes, the hood closes all the way, even with that twin four engine in place.

And 100% done. As soon as the glue is dry, in to the body it goes.
