looking forward to seeing more Kevin, But I gotta tell ya, I've already ticked off the collectors.... They're standing outside my apartment with pitchforks and bowie knives. All because of this.... And this.... And this.... And of course this (I could go on for days with the collectible kits I've re-arranged ).... Keep up the good work, and tell the collectors you know somebody worse than you about tearing up rare kits.... A few more ain't gonna matter to me! -
I am a model building newbie....

If you are just starting out, and have never painted a kit before, I would recommend using enamel spray cans, and a primer. It's best to get used to the feel of applying paint with a spray can before you get into using an airbrush. What I do is make sure the bodywork is straight and even (no mold lines, indentations, etc.) and apply a coat of primer. My favorite primer is colorplace from Wal-Mart. It can be used with any type of paint with no problems (enamel, lacquer, acrylic.). I spray a light coat, wait 10 minutes, and spray another, and keep doing that until it has complete coverage. The I use some fine grit sandpaper, and smooth out the primer being careful not to sand through to the plastic. Then I spray on what ever color I'm planning to use, using the same steps as with the primer, until I have a nice even coverage. Then I use the sandpaper to smooth out the paint, and then add 2 heavy wet coats of the main color, keeping them as smooth as possible. I then wait 2 weeks, and then add 3 light coats of clear, then 2 heavy coats, waiting 10 minutes between coats. after I have added the clear, I wait 1 month for it to dry, and then use polish on it to smooth it out, and give it a nice shine. Never use a paint brush painting a body. It'll leave brush marks in the paint, and it's a hassle to get the marks out. I only use a brush on small parts of a kit. Good luck with your building. Post your builds when you get a chance, and welcome to the forum! -
I remember seeing you at O.C.I.R. My step-dad took me to the races there. Your car was what makes me want to put tilt front ends on everything! We used to drive to the races in a silver tow truck that said S & S Exxon, San Clemente Ca. on the doors. I miss those days.... Thanks for sharing the pics, they brought back a lot of great memories....

Paint question
Custom Hearse replied to Custom Hearse's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
Thanks everyone. Your answers helped out a lot. -
I found some paint that I like at Auto Zone. It's a silver pearl color called radiant silver metallic, made by Dupli-Color. My question is what color would be a good base coat, White, or silver (since the paint is translucent? Thanks for any help.

Thanks Dan. I do my best to not get "swept up" into a tornado. I'll start working on the Datsun soon.
-
O.K. Dan, ya talked me into it. I'll start working on it again. I can see the violet in the body, it looks good! It makes it kinda like a color change paint. Keep up the great work on your builds, I enjoy seeing them!
-
That looks AWESOME Dan!!!! I'm glad you didn't toss it into a wall! Thanks for all the parts you've sent me for mine! You've made my truck a whole lot cooler.... as soon as I get back to it I'm looking forward to seeing the finish of your truck! Take care my friend!

Here's a storm I chased on 6-9-09, that I thought you would like Brandon. These are videos of the storm as it was coming towards me. Mother Natures light show.... They are 10 minutes each, and the lightning was really flying! After these I chased over to the Kansas/Missouri border and got walloped by 70 MPH outer winds of a tornado that had gone by Pittsburg Ks.... WHAT A RUSH!!!! -
WOW!!!!! this is very rare!
Custom Hearse replied to B_rad88's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
The tornado looks like it was trying to form an elephant trunk but didn't quite make it.... They will spin and twist sideways.... The little tornado inside was a suction vortice that spins inside and causes the most damage. That's a hell of a video! Nobody has ever captured a tornado that you could see into. There have been witnesses that have seen the inside of a tornado, but didn't have a camera with them. Thanks for posting that! -

Man.... That sucks! Ya gotta love Minneapolis though. They have a commercial play before the video that says come to Minneapolis and live happy, then they show a guy who is handicapped, being kicked out, boarded in, and robbed.... Makes me want to move there! -

Funny Car Summer-1974 "Acclaimed photographer Ron Phillips spends a summer with "funny car" racer Jim Dunn and his family as the Orange County, Calif.-based firefighter competes in drag races throughout the Southwest, racing his impressive, custom-built hot rods. Fast-paced and beautifully shot, the film is not only entertaining for its subject matter, but it also vividly captures the vibe of Southern California in the early 1970s." Starring: Jim Dunn Director: Ron Phillips Great movie. I saw it when it came out. -

Forgive me for saying this Mark, but wasn't it "obvious"? :P

No problem Lee. Sorry to hear you weren't feeling well, and hope your better! I gotta tell ya though.... It was the fastest "build" I've ever done! It took a total of 10 minutes to put it together!
-
I love it! I miss drag racing from the 60's and 70's.... Nice work you did!
-
Thought about doing both of those things myself.... I don't have a photoetch bending tool, but I have a ruler. Just wasn't sure if it was worth it though....

It's a joke Lee.... The box is part of the '60 Starliner kit that you cut out and glue together. I think it scales out to about 1/8th scale.... A 1/25th scale box would be cool Sam, and i like the magnet idea. Yup.... It is George. How would you prevent the cracking? I was as gentle as possible putting it together, and it still cracked.... Thanks for the compliments guy's!
