Hello guys, this will be my first "documented" build on this site and first actual build in a long time. The project I am tackling in the AMT 1979 Mustang "Pace Car" model that I have. this model was already built when I got it. Not by anyone I know and it has no sentimental value to me.. However I have wanted to build a Radial drag car out of a "four eyed" mustang for some time and even though I wish this was a Notch back or coupe it is not and the hatch back version will just have to do.. Things that are certain about this build is that the Coil over shocks, Disc brakes, ignition and battery stuff will all be scratch built. This car will also have a set of my radial drag tires on it. Also the power plant will be the Ford engine out of the 55 Ford jukebox ( Race prepped 429 CI powerplant) Car will also have a 4 link set up from that kit as well or one very similar.. First thing I am going to tackle is stripping the paint down and turning this T-Top car into a solid roof coupe.. Then I'll get into building the Tube chassis for the car.. The Poll is for the color combo. I plan to trim the windows the way they are in black. However I'm not sure on if I want to go with a two tone paint or a single solid 1 color car.. Planning to do the car in a nice Metallic Red. The two tone if I decide to do it will be from the side molding down.. Here is my Idea for the 2 Tone.. FM4_2tone frnt by Dick-Dastardly, on Flickr Here is the Car again with just the red.. FM4_1 by Dick-Dastardly, on Flickr Thanks guys and stay tuned I plan to document this build pretty good. It may be slow going though at least till Friday as some of my parts wont be in till then.. Here are some pics of the cars current state.. Tires I plan to use.. Scale wise they are between 10.5 and 11" wide..

Radial drag tires

Thanks !! Glad you like them.. What are your plans for them? can't wait to see how you use them ! -
I think maybe we are both doing so.. Seems everyone likes to think that he always had money. After his mother died from cancer his dad was left to care for him and couldn't afford to do so and sent him to live with his aunt on a farm. this is were he gained interest in Bull fighting and Car racing among other things. Had he not made it "big" as an actor I am sure he still would have made due with what ever he had and being that he would still had been of low income, it probably would have been something that we would consider a "Rat-Rod". Remember these cars back then aren't what they are made to be now. They were "Hot rods" Built by youngsters using what they had and could afford. If they could have afforded a nice paint job they probably would have done so. But the opposite was usually the case..

Was wondering if anyone has any pictures of well detailed 1/25 or 1/24 carburetors they have made. Please also post the color paints that were used. I have heard that 'Model Masters' "Jet Exhaust" is a good color to use.. just looking for ideas here .

Scored about 100 Free Ball points pens today from work for free. They discard them if the "clippy" gets broken off.. So I should be set on coil overs for quite some time ! LOL

These cars have more than just a design behind them. they are all about using era correct modifications to be loud and low. They are like the choppers of the automotive world. there is a whole lifestyle behind rat rodding and the creaters (Real rat rods). usually involves pin up girls, white T-Shirts and black leather jackets and lots of hair grease LOL From Wikipedia : Rat-Rod "Originally a counter-reaction to the high-priced "customs" and typical hot rods, many of which were seldom driven and served only a decorative purpose. The rat rod's inception signified a throwback to the hot rods of the earlier days of hot-rod culture—built according to the owner's abilities and with the intention of being driven. Rat rods are meant to loosely imitate, in both form and function, the "traditional" hot rods of the era. Biker, greaser, rockabilly, psychobilly, and punk sub-cultures are often cited as influences that shaped rat rodding. This guy probably did or would have built a "Rat Rod"

If I could only get my wife to see you guys' stash she would appreciate my lack of models more LOL.. I have 4 that were started and wont be completed and I have 2 unboxed models and around 40-50 previously completed models.. 1 WIP that I am collecting parts for -
Got a chance to meet OldandSlow today and we talked for hours about models and 1:1's. Really cool guy and we traded a couple models. I was lucky enough that he had a Juke Box 55 that I have been saving up to get and a bunch of tires.. Once again really cool guy and the size of his collection was unbelievable !!

79 Mustang Pace Car?
RadialDragon replied to RadialDragon's topic in Model Building Questions and Answers
Awesome Factoid ! I'll have to bring that up next time i'm at the car shows LOL. The local Junk yard has one sitting up on the car racks just rotting away. Still has the roll cage and slicks on it !! Probably one of the 3. The junk yard I am talking about is an all ford junk yard and is called "Rusty Acres" maybe you can find some pics.. -

OK cool, thanks. Chances of getting another unbuilt MPC are pretty slim I assume.. ? -
"1/25 Ford Cammer 427 SOHC American Muscle Engine" I am about to under go a 10.5 tire 1990 LX Mustang Build and am seriously considering this engine as the power plant. There are a few questions I hope I can find answers for by starting this thread and they are : (1) Has anyone here built one and actually have pictures of it? ( I googled it and results were mainly the box art) (2) Carbuerators. Are there any? Or is it just the air breather? I would like to not have the air breather and have a nice dual carb set up showing. (3) What style of intake manifold is this engine running? Looks to me like a single plane Intake.. (4) Transmission (Does it include one?) Sorry for all the questions but I have never bought an "aftermarket" engine for a model and wanted to be sure on a few things before I made the purchase.. Thanks

79 Mustang Pace Car?
RadialDragon replied to RadialDragon's topic in Model Building Questions and Answers
Thanks for the info. Would be absolutely awesome if they did a 4 eyed Notch (Coupe) in 1/25 I would buy soo many of them LOL.. Here is the under side and upon further review, you are right about the Hood. The cowl hood was loose on this one and fell right off and the hood that was under it looks like the one you have in your picture.. Not sure what the builder was thinking with the cowl hood addition... -

Awesome!!. Will do ! Not sure on the hollow or solid answer but I will check out what you have.. I should be able to give you a call Saturday sometime. Sorry I haven't done so earlier, but my work has been running me ragged LOL -
Was wondering if anyone knew anything about this particular model. I am interested in locating one and possibly building a 10.5 Tire Drag car out of one. This particular model that is shown in the pictures was a gift years ago from my uncle. He came across it and a bunch of other already assembled models at a garage sell and they were being given away.. Things I have noticed that could be better at first glance is the cowl hood and T Top Glass. The cowl hood looks horrible and I'm not even sure if it is true to the kit. Also the T-Tops do not line up with the top of the car in the slightest... Basically what I am interested in is the 4 eyed head light look. Absolutely love that style..

Radial drag tires
RadialDragon replied to RadialDragon's topic in Car Aftermarket / Resin / 3D Printed
Just keeping you guys posted. I am currently trying to find a worth while supply of tires to make these drag radials. Once I have nailed down a deal that will allow me to get these to you guys for a reasonable price then I will definitely let you guys know. Speaking of prices What is it people are looking to pay for this type of tire? Say for a "10.5 wide on 15" rim" Drag radial. I have a price in mind as to what I think is very reasonable but would like some feed back from you guys. Thanks.. -
