it does seem to be working faster today. thanks!

oh i gotta say that euro version looks about a thousand percent better than the usa version. no big surprise really. and i gotta think tamiya or someone will put this out with detail to shame revell...pretty much happens every time doesnt it? and maybe its just the photos but the euro version looks a lot sleeker than the USA one...the grille looks shorter and the nose looks longer and the sides look better too. but maybe its just the angle of the photos. those usa lights look ###### too but on that i am thinking its mostly the photo...right? one love jah bill

wouldnt want to trade it for, say, a DONK would you? didnt think so!

roadkill mike, where did that datsun come from? is that currently in shops? i have the bre one but would like one of those too as i assume they are basically the same. or is that from your stash? evilone, afraid of donks? please. i dont want to get into talking down anyones choice of building material so all i will say is if it interests you build on. personally i laugh when one of those goes by but its not from fear, believe me. i respect them as something completely off the wall, something completely impractical (almost the pure definition of "custom" in a way) and im amazed the $ some of them people dump into them but i am not spending my time doing one. that certainly dont mean you or anyone or everyone cant do them. same way i dont build nascar: absolutely no interest. so call me an equal opportunity hater if anything. well i take that back, i might indeed build nascar if that included 50s and 60s nascar before they all started regulating it to death. road racing, yeah that implies left and right turns. anyway whatever the theme, i will build one. or not. mostly not im afraid because i usually have to be pretty highly motivated to complete something, and working to a deadline is too much like real work.

i would be in for this as well assuming last minute plans didnt kaplow it. as for themes i like the road race one. donks on the other hand will guarantee zero from me (no big loss really) because i dont spend my time building stuff i have no interest in, no matter (practically) what. either way, or any other way, i would attempt to make it to the meeting

you could probably rig up a dremel foot control for the B&D but i will tell you what you should do instead: put that B&D out in the garage where it belongs and buy yourself a dremel mini-mite. thats the battery powered one. two speeds, fast and slow. the fast is just right for grinding plastic and the slow is quite slow for really careful work. even the fast speed wont melt plastic unless you really want it to. raul has a new pistol grip style model but ive the traditional dremel tool shaped mini-mite and its the stuff. last i checked they were about 30 -35 $, including battery pack and recharger.

Ability vs. Enthusiasm
jbwelda replied to Harold's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
its a little known fact: no one ever got anywhere watching tv every night. that said, i had comcast there for awhile and got addicted to survivorman (note NOT "survivor") and man vs wild. but now that im out in the country its no more comacast for me. ot but yeah bluesman, muddy waters i think that must be, first the stones now youre going back to the roots. and a mention of richie hayward too, great drummer too bad that band he was or maybe still is in never managed to replace the irreplacable lowell george. anyway just got through listening to bag of reds if you know that one, its a line from (wait till the sh*t hits) the fan. if you dont know their boot elektrif lycanthrope then get to know. -
>It flipped off of my sharp tipped tweezers i can identify with that. a very small bit of blue tac on the end of a toothpick works a lot better than tweezers for photo etch. no i dont have an answer for everything but that particular scenerio ive been through once or twice!

dont know if youre kidding but in case you are not: >My 8" sheet metal shears just can't get straight edges, cut PE with an xacto blade and then file the nib down with a mid-coarse sanding stick. or go to radio ###### shack and get a pair of cheap cutters (the only thing they have that seems to work) and dedicate them to cutting PE. >using my "liquid nails" glue to hold them in place dont use glue; use the miracle substance, future floor polish to hold small PE detail parts. works like a champ. clear overcoat lacquer will work too but future is more forgiving.

well one problem might have been the sunday mid day part. worked for me but a lot of people have other things planned for sundays: church, mountains, yard work etc so its hard to get away in the middle of the day esp with families. also for me the distance: its a good hundred miles to san jose and i cant really do that that often. and just the flake factor: things sound good up until the time and then something else comes up. i wouldnt worry about it; the turnout was ok if you ask me, at least as good as a typical club meeting for our club in sacto and there was more on the table than usual for us as well. i just think it ebbs and flows and also you would get more (local) takers if it were in the evening after work on the weekday. also from a personal perspective, calling me one of the finest builders or whatever that was is really stretching it. i take it as a compliment but i would never consider myself anything like that. but i guess they wouldnt know who showed up if they didnt themselves!

dont you need to carve a buck or something to mold over? or is the temp low enough you can use the kit glass? but that would not be my use for it, to replace kit glass; it would be to be able to make windshields/glass for things i dont have them for, such as cut down windscreens for road race cars. ive always wanted to play with a vac-form but the idea of carving a wood buck really kind of made me think it wasnt to viable an option...more trouble to carve the buck than to scratch build a windscreen on its own.

man i look like i got a big mouth full of pizza in that pic!!! thanks for putting this on Milt, I had a blast coming out there and talking to everyone there, and going to D&Js afterward! i dont get to the south bay often so it was fun just being in the area too! some very nice models on display and some good people in attendance! theres another "Luigi's" pizza parlor in the same shopping center? man thats a strange coincidence! thanks for everyone coming out and special thanks to Raul for the ride from Tracy.

April 20th Get Together
jbwelda replied to m408's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
i think its a kick back type of thing where you can bring stuff that you have built. or at least thats what i got in mind. also note its 4/20 if that means anything to ya. -
maybe i dont see what youre pointing out but from what i can see the top one is a machined piece with integrated shaft and clamp and the bottom a smaller machined piece with separate shaft? looks like i would prefer the top one myself...at least through the packaging it looks more realistic. raul you gonna have one of those resin ones to show sunday?

heres something you may find to be a real revelation: you dont have to read the threads you dont want to read. otherwise youre just spectating at a train wreck or looking for something to get offended by.

More Goodies Coming From Japan
jbwelda replied to Zoom Zoom's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
wow that is some release schedule there! i am particularly looking forward to those "rubber sole/soul" nissan gt-r from yesteryear. i have a 1/32 one i converted to slot car with scalextric chassis and it looks great so i cant wait for a 1/24 version. i wish someone would bring out racing versions of a modern toyota MRS, and a Honda S2000, two of my favorite modern cars. maybe soon...im surprised tamiya hasnt upgraded their s2000 for a race car version. now someone PLEASE come with the Lotus Elise/Exige!!! -
Fujimi Porsche 356a 1500gs Carrera Speedster
jbwelda replied to simonr's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
simon, did you buy that kit from me? if so pm me and i will look around for replacements for you. or even if you did not buy it from me, maybe i can find you the parts you need. -
bob you will be surprised how metallic (not metallic paint, but real metal) they look when you buff them, especially, in my experience, the aluminum plate. just using the paint and not buffing it is only getting about ten percent of the effect. are they being discontinued? man i am going to have to stock up fast, like tomorrow, because ive become addicted to them for engine and running gear detail and ive been wanting to use the alum plate on a full body one of these days, kind of like steve hinson i think it was used some to simulate raw metal under a worn away paint job, total cool look there.

cool breeze, i think i will bring along the offy powered T lakester ive been dawdling about on for the past few years, might get me motivated to finish it soon, soon as i put my life back together from a major move currently being made. hey heres a tip: acetone (finger nail polish remover) will unstick super glue i think. dont quote me on that but i believe its so. it will prevent pieces of non-scale skin remaining with a model as a testimony to the blood sweat and tears of the build!

Gunze Sangyo Mr. Color...lacquer Line
jbwelda replied to simonr's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
well maybe you just said it, but i think it comes down to having distribution in the USA or not. tamiya as you know has a headquarters here (or did...i think maybe they shut that down recently?) so they are more or less "local". i dont think gunze has distributorship here so they must just rely on buyers to find them to distribute on a small scale here for them. also are there not some pretty extreme restrictions on how you can ship paint internationally, due to the "toxic" nature and the explosive nature of spray bombs, oops, cans? but im with you, any company that calls its products "mr." has my business. its a stroke of crazy genius that i think only the asians could come up with. mr surfacer in particular cracks me up every time i hear it. hey mister, wheres MRS surfacer? and if theres a mr and a mrs, there has to be a whole mess of kids...what do you suppose you call them? junior surfacers? -
i dont know if they are laquer or not but they smell like cancer to me. i never clear over them, that seems to take away the "metal" look you get by buffing them and they then just look like painted parts. ive found the best finish is achieved by spraying them, buffing them and then avoid touching them as much as possible.

assuming you mean spraying with tamiya clear from the buzz can, ive never noticed any ill effects when ive shot the clear immediately after the color (like 20 minutes i mean) nor when waiting a few hours or any random time up to leaving the body sit for a few weeks before shooting the clear. the clear always flowed out well and never blushed or orange peeled or anything. one thing though is that i am in california where its warm and dry; i could see problems maybe if you are in a cool and/or humid area.
