  1. Some may recall my attempt at building the AMT (resin repop) Triumph Bonneville a couple months ago: http://www.modelcars...showtopic=54881 at the end of which i pondered over perhaps trying a Revell Parts Pack Honda, i believe a 305 Super Hawk (motorcycle), to accompany the surf shack (diorama) and Ed Roth's Surfite (auto). I took down one of the Hondas i had on the shelf and looked it over: all chrome plated, but otherwise nicely detailed and actually very finely detailed in areas like the gas tank side badge and knee pad as well as the motor detail. so what the heck...when i was a kid i attempted one of these with very much less than desirable results but that was with tube glue and i never had the patience to scrape away the chrome before gluing. hopefully, i thought, i have passed that stage. a look at the instructions, printed right on the inside of the Parts Pack package...saving trees way before their time: looks pretty straightforward eh? just you beware that six piece front end! that was the number one challenge in this whole build, aligning and stabilizing the front end, triple tree, wheel and tire, headlamp, fork cap so that it would look decent on the front end of the frame. the AMT Triumph had it all over this one when it came to easy of assembly but i must say this looks pretty good completed! just a couple of photos right now, i will update in a day or two...i have already taken off the taillight, it was just on with white glue to see how it looked, and reworked it a bit more so it looks better on the fender. i also have to make some brake, clutch and accelerator cables and will glue those and the taillight on and take some better pics tomorrow. questions comments criticisms surely welcome and surly addressed! one thing i desperately need is a small very small rat fink decal to put on the side cover or front fender! any suggestions?
  2. ghetto means no one goes there. its kind of a sophisticated term used in urban planning and just as relevant when discussing organization of in this case information. when you want to hide something you ghettoize it and stick it somewhere no one ever goes. like the educational sub band of FM radio, like public TV, like non-mainstream music in a music shop...ghettoize it. i am not "complaining" about moving my motorcycle or any little agenda like that. thanks for your helpful suggestion. so its been hashed over...i guess i dont read every thread here because they are spread out all over the place. i was going to ask a couple more rational questions but i think i will just save my time for some useful pursuit and leave the administration here to the brainiacs who rule. because they know.
  3. i notice that my posts of a diorama restoration and of a motorcycle were moved from, i think, under glass and workbench forums to the diorama forum and the total ghetto "other" forum. seems kind of like its not really worthwhile posting in those forums because no one really looks at them or at least i dont and i notice from the typical number of views that not many others do. the question is: if one wanted to post a build thread concerning a motorcycle, one cannot post it in the workbench section? if one does it will be moved to the "other" hinterland and the same with a diorama? and if one were building a diorama, or even cars for placement in a diorama, one must post it in the diorama section and again not in the workbench or under glass forums or the posts will be moved to the "no one looks because no one really knows its there" wilderness? if that is the case then i think the mgmt is making a big mistake. i think this oversegmentation is ruining this place by making it near impossible to find subjects one might be interested in. particularly that "other" wasteland and the inclusion of motorcycles there amongst the anime, figures, war stuff, submarines, aircraft and just plain junk just make it a waste of time to post build threads because no one is going to see them or follow them. if i were to suggest a change, how about if one is allowed to post build threads in the build forum and completed builds in the under glass forum and then if they must be moved, moderators or whoever masterminds this stuff wait at least for 2 weeks of inactivity in the thread (no new posts and no new views) before moving them. the over segmentation has really become ridiculous what with the "drag" section, the "trucks" (including pickups which i think is absurd but i dont pay the bills) section and the 30 other sections few if any pay any attention to. its time to simplify once again if you ask me and of course no one did but i do find it very difficult to find subjects here that interest me anymore but thats because i tend to stay in the first few forums on the home page. anyone else agree? disagree? think "its all good"?
  4. that looks really sweet, i am going to have to try it on something. thanks for posting!
  5. >leaking fluids of any sort is just piss poor maintenance. plain and simple ok...so you just rebuilt the motor and have it all buttoned up and 200 miles later you notice small amount of seep from the rear main seal, not enough to drip, yet, but enough to attract dust and make it look messy on your nice new chrome thingie. so you tear out the motor and tear it down to replace the main seal and put it back in, to find out if maybe THIS time the stupid thing seated properly and nothing else messed up in r/r. if so, i salute you. most people would just drive it. i know i would. then again i dont have cars on magazine covers either!
  6. > if l had a muscle car it would be perfect. really? because that doesnt sound very real-world based. if youre gonna drive it its gonna get dirty and the motor is going to leak fluids at least enough to pick up dirt and make it look dirty. now if its all up in your garage then you can have perfect...a perfect garage queen. not much of a muscle car.
  7. replicas and miniatures of maryland are stellar, in selection, casting, and at least with the orders i have made, if it wasnt in stock norm would tell you and tell you an ETA and every time whatever it was was delivered by that date. with him picking up the extra postage. and the pieces are beyond excellent. only drawback: no overt internet presence. he would probably be overwhelmed if he had more internet outlets.
  8. those seats are sharp! its gonna be a shame to cover them with paint kinda, that metal looks pretty nice just as it is! i notice on the instruction sheet it mentions spider webs and also rivit strips. sure enough on that (very wicked looking) photoetch fret, theres some strips of rivits to use somewhere! i gotta get some of these seats...
  9. it just goes to show, just like in the models we build, if we skip one thing, no matter how insignificant, that very flaw will be front and center in any photograph of the piece. never fails.
  10. continuing on...hope we can all get some inspiration from the photos... so i have been looking around for a kool headlamp treatment for a rod i recently finished, and i think i might have found something i like. note this rat rod ran like gangbusters...and made a lot of kool smoke and noise just like it oughta! ok so here is the surprise, probably not all that much of a surprise but did you ever see these kinds of drag cars and wonder where that body came from: well, heres where they come from, a Bantam roadster restored to original condition, sitting in the car show area: you can really see it in the distinctive rear deck but of course on the fibreglass drag cars all that is left is the indented impression of the spare tyre well.: again, can really see it in the side scallop details. all in all a totally fun day, they had a rocket car but i didnt get to see it run...might head back over again tomorrow as it is being held literally in the middle of a corn field about 20 miles from my house and it only costs 15 to get in...anyone in the central cali area you ought to get out of the house and over there!
  11. now here is an old school rail that i just loved. totally dig those halibrand spoke wheels and the short stubby look of this thing: drilled axle and little details are what i like: total old school hemi: ok so i thought that was kool but then my heart stopped as i glanced, up ahead, but moving to the starting line quickly: not wanting to be content with the fabled but feared "butt shot" of wildlife photographers nightmares, i tried to catch up to get a nice overall shot of this front mounted blower on a total total TOTAL old skool hemi...but then there was mostly always someone in the way. loved this thing, great paint job all the way down to the side mounted injector scoop with flames etc but most of all all the polished and chrome to the blower intake and drive! and finally a tony nancy 22 jr type of chassis with an injected flatty...i talked to the owner for a bit and he didnt think it was a tony nancy rail but it had been built originally in 68 i think he said... one more post to come...and maybe a surprise!
  12. went to the nostalgia drags at Kingdon Drag Strip also known as the local airport (hows that for nostalgia?). this is a really fun, really informal, gathering of a lot of local and not so local cars, some straight out of the 60s, literally, and some more modern in origin. brought my camera because i have been wanting to get photos of this pontiac catalina i see here every year, it tears up the strip, and i want to build a model of it. usually that sort of thing drives my photography: wanting to build a model of a particular car that catches my fancy, or of details that i can incorporate into a model build. so heres what struck me this year, over a couple of posts to get the photos in... starting with the pontiac catalina i wanted to document: a poor shot of it coming off the line. this thing really roars when it launches! heres a chevy nova with a look i would like to recreate, tube axle and nose up stance: moving on to a next post...
  13. i take it at least one of those sprues, probably the one with the bumpers on it, are to be chrome plated in the production version? i always liked that body style as much or more than the GM product of the same year.
  14. thats what it usually is: someone connected to you who has access and knows roughly your schedule. what i dont understand is if you got the guy, why dont you have the stuff? did he unload it already? stupid low lifes...and theres only so much you can do to protect yourselves from idiots like that. and i am guessing meth is probably involved somewhere in there...usually is these days
  15. thanks john, thats interesting to know. i agree...i think this was customized from the original styrene body. nice job on the cleanup too.
  16. thats a real drag. but dont lose hope; oftentimes merchandise can be recovered...check craigslist and ebay for sure. it wont bring back your feeling of security but at least some material stuff can often be returned. they didnt hurt your models right? my worst fear would be that someone like that would smash stuff up on the way out. the old ultra violence just for the heck of it.
  17. any information on the MODEL i bought? citations of publication? just to be clear here, from the model i bought and the manner in which it was packed and shipped, i would wholeheartedly endorse buying these buildups. i am usually very fearful that what i will receive for my hard earned will be a pile of parts by the time it reaches but in this case it was absolutely perfect and super well packed. so if you are thinking about purchasing a piece of modelling history from the seller of the late ron cashs models, you may do so with confidence if my experience is any guide.
  18. does someone here own stock in wal-mart? seems like my posts concerning them and the damage done keep getting disappeared.
  19. um...why arent you naming the culprit so we can avoid him? seems like the right thing to do.
  20. i was just looking for a chrome camshaft to use as a spreader bar and found one in the AMT parts pack reissue with the allison motor and the T body and all. and heres a suggestion for the body: this is my all time favorite 32 ford body and its pretty easily adaptable to a different chassis if you dont want to use its detailed but finnicky one.
  21. i do have to temper my above response a bit in that i do give credit to the form (nascar) for a couple of things: having to run in high speed packs (never an easy thing to do and disasterous consequences if you mess up, and that the cars are all sort of "formula" cars that dont vary that much from one to the other (right? i mean aside from little tricks eaking out very slight advantages?) making the races a total "drivers" race. but for me thats part of the problem too...there isnt much development in the individual cars (again, right?) and thats part of what i enjoy about racing.
  22. here is a question maybe someone here can answer, i just paid a pretty good amount on ebay for a 49 ford pickup custom built by the late ron cash...i am not sure whether this is his resin body or if it was built from the amt sedan or what...anyone have any idea on the history of this model? also does anyone recognize it as being ever featured in a magazine and if so, possibly the year and issue? edit to add picture: http://www.ebay.com/...984.m1497.l2649 i am not sure who is running the auctions but there have been and continue to be a lot of his builds up lately and while the price is pretty steep in some ways (and the bids pretty much non-existant) i look at what i have here and have to think i value it at double easy what i paid. nicely detailed, beautiful interior, nice custom work on the pickup conversion (if thats what it is), sweet smooth metallic root beer paint, nicely applied bare metal foil (makes my attempts laughable in comparison) and totally great overall appearance. this is getting a very nice space in my display case with a sign indicating the builder, who i take it is fairly well known and respected.
  23. well "we" might not want to pay for quality but I will. as long as there is quality inside the box...not another flashy (as in lots of extra plastic) mediocre in its inception and execution reissue...i am willing to pay for it.
  24. to mix metaphors a bit, nascar is to auto racing as walmart is to shopping and both try hard to wipe out any competition so they have the field to themselves. only in america would roundy round racing have such a big following...so boring the crashes are the only thing to liven it up and make it the least bit interesting.
