to clear, or not to clear, that tis ze question...
Billy Kingsley replied to LVZ2881's topic in Tips, Tricks, and Tutorials
I have recently started clearing over my BMF. I have found that it seals it, and that not clearing over BMF tends to let it get pulled off fairly easily, as in the process of dusting and packing for shows. In effect, I won't BMF without clearcoating for the most part these days...of cource, I may make an exception depending on the desired results, but if I am doing a full car it will be cleared- even if I didn't plan to clear the rest of the car. Decals, on the other hand, I NEVER, EVER clear over. -
Nnl East Announcement
Billy Kingsley replied to Tom Geiger's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
Sounds like you should be an official sponsor, Andy You know it Jamie! More things to buy!! You know as well as I do that I could fill a NASCAR table myself...Let's see, I have 74 completed, and could finish 5-6 more before the NNL, and that's not even taking into account that the show is pushed back this year...HMMM... -

Look Tom, I'm not the only one who wants a NASCAR section! -
what do you do?
Billy Kingsley replied to bandit.93's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
Tamiya, Model Master Lacquer (MML), Testors/MM enamel, and the occasional use of Black Gold/House of Color and MCW for me, all in rattle can form. I can't use automotive lacquers due to my mom's asthma, and I don't own an airbrush. I USED to brush paint everything, if I painted it at all, which I didn't always do. -

Happy Birthday Bill
Billy Kingsley replied to RJWood's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
Happy birthday, a little late, Bill! Mine comes up the 18th of this month Vacation for the week, eh? Does that mean a Toledo trip is planned? -
I got it finished yesterday. Considering what it is, and what I did to myself in the build process...I'm amazed it both A) got done before leaving for Toledo and Got done EVER! LOL. I won this car at Toledo last year as a door prize. It's an R&R Vacuum Craft kit that was actually really really nice, better then some of Ray's stuff I've used. I knew I wanted to do it as a NASCAR version, but didn't know what one. Until Bernie posted that he had done decals for it...I paypaled him within a month and they were on the way to me! But then, I didn't actually start it until this past Saturday! Nothing like waiting until the last moment, eh? It pretty much fell togther. It is entirely aftermarket or scratchbuilt EXCEPT the seat and steering wheel, and the seat was modified. I scratchbuilt the entire interior pan, and it has a modified PPP cage. The finish is something I've never done on a 1/24 or 1/25 model...it's Tamiya Primer that I clearcoated. I've had success doing that in 1/64 and it worked just as well on a larger scale. Decals are, as I said, Bernie's, and it was the first time I had ever used inkjet paper. I was a little worried how that would go...but they worked better then many screenprinters do! I didn't have to use Micro-Sol once! The one thing I didn't check for was the rear tire clearence. With the interior bucket I made, they just won't fit, and to have it sit right would have required creating an entire new interior bucket. So I decided that it would sit with a speedway rake, unfourtunatly you can see the chassis. Oh well! Two other firsts: I remembered to scratchbuild exhuast dumps and rear window braces! Overall, I am really happy with the way this one came out! And yes, it'll be in Toledo! I had to take a guess at contingency placement. I was not able to locate a clear photo showing them, so I went with the blurry one I had and the best educated guess I could make! Enjoy the photos... Thanks for looking!

where do you get your models?
Billy Kingsley replied to Hartness53's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
About 95% of my kit buying is done at the TNMCC meetings, where member Dan Marks sells kits. I didn't get anything this month, which is unusual, as I usually get something from him every month. (Saving for Toledo!) I have two "LHS" within 5 minutes of my house, and everything else comes from there. For specialty kits (read: Non current releases, resin, aftermarket) that is done almost exclusivly at model shows. NNL East, NNL Nationals, MASSCAR, LIARS...All have vendor rooms, where I go through money like it's going out of style...LOL. I've never bought a kit on Ebay. I have purchased from Hobby Heaven, Model Roundup, Fantastic Plastics, SMH and a few others in the past...but that's usually only for stuff I can't find elsewhere. -
Break Out Models
Billy Kingsley replied to FloridaBoy's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
Thanks Chris! Much appreciated!! I do need to make one little correction in my post...I said that the Modelhaus Tucker is the only resin I've built...That's not correct. About 3 months ago I finished an R&R Vacuum Craft 63 Impala wagon, which was my second resin. I may have my third done for Toledo! -

Break Out Models
Billy Kingsley replied to FloridaBoy's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
It would not let me make my post in an unmolested way. Here is the end of the post. I've finally found something about this new forum style I dislike. (Besides the picture shrinking!) Here is a very early shot of the interior. I have added more since then, but I think that the plastic I used was actually too large and I have been seriously debating ripping most of that out and redoing it. That is why there is not much that has been done in quite some time, I've been debating this for quite a while. I was hoping to have it done for Toledo, but that is coming up in just about a week and a half and I know that is just not going to be possible, for this year's show. -
Break Out Models
Billy Kingsley replied to FloridaBoy's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
I definitly see that in mine, Ken! I even have an album on my Fotki which has the models placed in order of completion...you can look through the photos and see the build quality improve, over time, to where I am at today. Unfortunatly a lot of photos were taken before I knew what I was doing with my camera and are not of good quality. Most of the photos have been replaced from the main model album but I never did it for this album, mainly because I didn't feel like numbercoding them again! You can see the album here: http://public.fotki.com/ElCaminoBilly/my_models_in_order/ My breakout builds: #1...This was the first model I ever built. Opened up a whole new world to me, back in 99, and has gone on to engross a whole lot of my life since then. It's taken some damage over time (mainly, the tailgate hinge) but has held up surprisinly well. Note that I didn't paint the inside of the body, and the bed is painted gold because I didn't have brown. #5...My first attempt at a Custom, of sorts. I called it "the Marble Truck" and I did that paint scheme on purpose. It was the only time I ever did a marbleized car, and it was also the first pickup I ever did. This one, seeing the rear window cover's bare gray plastic made me realize that I should probably paint the inside of the body. Photo by Greg Nichols. #32...My first attempt at modifing anything, just a simple bit of sanding, but it would lead to other things. When I did this it was my pride and joy...Now I rarely ever even think about it, let alone bring it up every 10 minutes I removed the scripts and door handles. Not by sanding them off, by cutting them off with one of those black handled Testors knifes! #64...My first use of BMF (Bare Metal Foil, of cource). On an old Monogram Citation, no less! Amazingly, this one still survives completly intact. Many of my early ones have lost parts...Heck, some of my latest ones have lost parts too! LOL! From 1990-1996 a 1983 Citation Hatchback was our family daily driver. Someday I'll have the skills and guts to attempt to convert the Monogram Notch into a hatch. (Like I said, a lot of the pictures stink!) #127..Although not completed for a while, this one is perhaps the most important one of all! It was the very first car I ever spray painted, under the guidance of Rick Hanmore at the 2003 TNMCC picnic. As I have recounted in the past, I had come very close to calling it quits due to the lack of skills I had and some other factors I won't go into. This car is the one that saved my hobby. It's got a ton of bubbles, and not even complete coverage, but that's not important...the fact that I was able to actually spray paint something, and make it look fairly decent, made all the diffrence in the world! #118..My first real NASCAR model. I consider this one my second most personally important model, after the Dodge posted above it. I have been a fan of NASCAR since I was 8 years old back in 1992, but I didn't build really any, because of my poor building skills. I had done a few ProFinish kits and one Dale Earnhardt car that was brush painted black, the only color I can consistantly brush paint good enough to do the body of a car on, this is the one that convinced me I could build NASCAR models on a regular basis. This was back in April 2004, and since that time I have built 74 NASCAR models. I think this one qualifys as a breakout! Oh yeah, it's also the first time I ever successfully opened a panel, in this case, the trunk. #194..My first Resin kit, the Modelhaus Tucker. I had set my new year's resolution as "Learn Resin" and so I forced myself to do it...This was the result. I'm actually amazed how well this one turned out, considering that it was my first, and that I did all the final painting during a commercial break in the Indy 500! LOL! Unfortunatly, 17 months later, and I havn't finished another resin since then! I do have a few nearly done, though. #200..My best model to date. This one, while being my first nationally known model, is my most well known model, as it has appered in a half page ad for Galaxie Limited in Model Cars Magazine Issue #116, and just looks better then all the rest! I had orginally started this for a club wagon project (Even in the club I have to choose a SD, and can't stick to the common wagon! LOL!) but grew frustrated and packed it back away. Then, Jairus called for Galaxie kits on the board...I pulled it out, got back on it and finished it in two days! All that had been done was the yellow paint and the engine block about 50%. Even though I had some major trouble on the first attempt, everything just fell togther that time and it came out perfect! Unfortunatly, the hood is not on tight in this photo. D'oh! #203..Although not visible to standard viewing, this 57 Nomad is the first car I've ever built with a wired engine. A major breakthrough for me, as I admittandly know nothing about engines or pretty much anything else that actually makes a car run. I've yet to do it again, but I will, and soon. This one doesn't have a number yet, because it's not done. When I do finally finish this one, it will be my most detailed piece ever. I don't have any recent shots on it, but I have been working on it pretty steadily since March of last year. I converted a street Dodge Daytona into NASCAR usage, and at last count it had over 40 scratchbuilt items on it, and several modified, including an opened trunk and completly fabricated interior of the trunk sections. Eventually it'll be Charlie Glotzbach's #99 Ray Nichols car. It really doesn't look much like this anymore, but it's the best shot I have. -
October 2007 TNMCC meeting
Billy Kingsley replied to VW Dave's topic in Model Club News and Announcements
Some great shots there Dave... Here are my own... http://public.fotki.com/ElCaminoBilly/tnmc...r-2007-meeting/ Look familiar? -
I got a nice half inch cut in my left pointer finger...Drill slipped....Didn't draw blood and didn't really hurt but I've been taking it easy, don't want to do any real damage... I did it Friday but havn't posted since then. As for actual model stuff, well, I got a nice set of Bob Dudek Lake Pipes in the mail since the last time I posted, which are destined to be on my neon green Mercury, which I am still planning on getting done in time for Toledo!

Ken and others...At least you had the opportunity to experience JoHan! I didn't start modeling until November 1999....at that point, it was far, far too late for me Granted, I was only born in 84 so the heyday of Johan predates me, but still... Johan kits are like gold to me.....Hard to find, harder to afford, and a pleasure when the opportuniy arises! I have less then 10 classic Johan kits in my collection, all of which have costed me $30 or more except one, which I consider to be a true bargain! I found a factory sealed 35 Mercedes at LIARS last year for only $20..I will build it, eventually! The first "Old Kit" I ever bought was a Johan, the 1960 DeSoto from the USA Oldies issue. I got it at the NNL East in 2001 and paid $30 for it. I'm still upset beause the box got crushed...totally destroyed. That one was special to me. I did replace it at MASSCAR this year, for $50, but it's not the same. Still, that one doesn't leave my sight here, as it's the only unbuilt kit with a permanent place on my display. I did get all the reissues Okey did, and built several of them, but it's not quite the same as having them new. I wish I could find more Superbirds. I have only one and the desire to build 5 at the very least. With the lack of vinyl roof, it's perfect for NASCAR builds, which is exactly what I want to do with them! Yes, you guys may be regretting not supporting Johan as much as you could have....but at least you got the chance to!

Wiring a blown engine
Billy Kingsley replied to Billy Kingsley's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
Thank you for the help guys! Marcos, that is a great drawing...Much more complicated then I am ready for!! Someday! Right now I'm going to stick to the distributor, and if I get real motivated, I may try some other lines too. We shall see!! -
Alright....I'll be honest, I know nothing about engines. I accept that, I'm fine with that, it's not usually a problem, I just leave the hoods closed.... However, I've got two projects that are calling for an exposed engine...both of which being blown engines. One of which is a Chevy engine, the other is...I don't know. I can do a factory stock Chevy engine from the 1950s-on pretty good, but I don't know if the fact that it's been blown makes a diffrence. I wouldn't even have gotten that far without some help from a member who dosn't have the opportunity to post here anymore. The engine I want to be doing is the blown option in the Revell (formerly Monogram) 1979 Camaro Z/28, which was just reissued a few years back. The other is a circa 1997 Top Fuel NHRA drag car engine. I know, totally out of my normal scope of builds, but that's never stopped me before. Pictures would be helpfull! Thanks in advance!

What brings you to this forum?
Billy Kingsley replied to lonewolf's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
I post here because I can Seriously, I post here because I enjoy message boards...I post on three Model boards regularly, this one, Hobby Heaven (Now Spotlight Hobbies) and Randy's NASCAR modeling board. I used to post on BAD when it exsited...that was a fun board. I also post on a handfull of other message boards, including Hemmings, Roush-Fenway Racing, 2 for NASCAR Diecast and several others. I own/operate a handfull of boards myself including the TNMCC message board, too. I don't post on the other magazines' board because I can't...I type in my username and password and it keeps bringing up the log in page...So I stopped trying after a month of repeated trys. Now...the real question is why we CONTINUE to post here... For me that's two reasons: All they guys I've known for more then half a decade now on the HH board mostly made the move over here...So of cource I am here too. (I did join as soon as I knew it existed!) and the other is, I gotta keep pestering Gregg and Jairus to include NASCAR models in the magazine...Somebody's gotta do it -
