The distance doesn't really bother me much, and we love Utah. (been there multiple times. Zion National Park is one of my wife's favorite places on the planet.) But when your other half is nursing instructor at a university, you learn quickly that you don't go anywhere until summer break starts. If the show were in June or July, I would consider it. Steve

My wife is a college professor and will still be working at that time. No major trips for me until school is out. It's a long way from Fargo, North Dakota to Salt lake City, Utah. Steve

Interior color help needed
StevenGuthmiller replied to Kool Kat's topic in Model Building Questions and Answers
This may not be much help to you, but being a guy who builds almost exclusively factory stock models, I always think in terms of stock colors. The auto manufacturers didn't always get everything right, but in general, I believe that they did a pretty good job of mating interior color combinations with body colors. The color that you are using most closely resembles a color used on Ford products in 1962 and '63 called "Chestnut", a kind of brick red color. The most common interior color combo for Chestnut was a matching 2 tone of a "russet red" and a somewhat lighter, "coral" or "dusty rose" accent with silver piping. It sounds a little garish, and it probably is, but to my eye, it's quite attractive. As I said, I have a bit of a prejudiced opinion when it comes to interior color combos, but in my eye, the obligatory light tan leather interior that you see in most custom cars today is one of the biggest affronts to the beautiful body styles of the 50s and 60s. I used a similar combination in a black '62 Ford Sunliner that I built a few years ago, and it's still one of my favorites. Steve -
May 2nd through the 5th is probably not going to work for me. Besides that, I'm thinking that the competition is a little beyond my abilities. I'm not that competitive, and I never think about how one of my builds will fare in an event like this when I'm building it. I think I'll just stick around for the NNL North show later on in May. Where and when? I plan on a trip somewhere, sometime this summer. I might be able to trick the wife into thinking we're going to visit relatives! Steve

That is very cool! Not the best looking car ever manufactured, but it's the best looking example of this kit that I have seen! Great work!! Steve -
Or you can make a mold much easier with Silly Putty, or as I do, a 2 part mold putty. Mix the two parts together, press in the part that you want to recreate and let it set for a couple of hours. When it's set, peel out the original and you are now ready to cast parts with either resin, 2 part epoxy, or if you want them instantly, you can use Lazer Bond or Bondic glue. Steve

Wow! Thanks Kevin! It was a great pleasure meeting you as well! I can foresee a great relationship between us going forward! I've already been thinking about some of the things we talked about. The '59 Olds glass, the '69 Mopar color, and what was the name of that mid-sixties Ford blue that you were looking for? Is this the Mopar color you were talking about? Steve

1967 Ford Galaxie XL, 427 R Code.
StevenGuthmiller replied to StevenGuthmiller's topic in Model Cars
Yes Bruce, I will absolutely get some outdoor shots at some point when the weather will permit. With several feet of snow left to melt, it could be a little while before the opportunity arises, but I will post some when I can. Thank you! Steve -

I just want to thank everyone for all of your extremely kind comments on the finished model and the build thread for this project. This is one model that I knew I must build at some point, and it was a lot of fun. Thank you all so much!! Steve -

The biggest problem with brake fluid is disposal. Steve -
Nice one Rick! I have this exact kit, in the same unbuilt condition waiting to be built. I was going to get started on it right after my '67 Galaxie build, but decided that I had better revisit a certain '65 Fury that I had been having repeated paint issues with. But hopefully, the '66 Bonneville will be soon. Steve

Paint Strippers - What to Use?
StevenGuthmiller replied to pbj59's topic in Model Building Questions and Answers
No need to get excited Craig. I didn't mean anything by it. It just didn't make any sense to me that if you're using the same Duplicolor primer that is easily dissolved in a matter of minutes, that the paint, regardless of the type, wouldn't come off with it. As long as there is an avenue for the solution to get under the paint to the primer, the type of paint on top of it shouldn't matter. I think of it somewhere along the lines of, if the substrate below your concrete garage floor erodes away, your floor is going to collapse, no matter how hard the concrete. Not saying it can't happen, I just don't understand how it would. Steve -
Haven't seen any resin copies, but as "kelson" stated, they are available in some kits, including the '67 Cyclone and '66 Fairlane. I very recently swiped one from the '67 Cyclone kit for my '67 Galaxie. The nice part is that the Cyclone is not supposed to use that particular part anyway. The instructions call for the washer jar to be used instead. Both the jar and bag are included in the kit. Steve

Another winter storm bearing down on us here. Blizzard warnings continue from tonight, through to early Friday morning. 2-18 inches of new snow around the region with freezing rain and 55-65 mph wind gusts. Everything is already closing in anticipation of the storm, from schools to donut shops! Steve -
Modern Big Pontiac Chassis.
StevenGuthmiller replied to StevenGuthmiller's topic in Model Building Questions and Answers
The GTO is not even in the ball park. The GTO is on the Tempest chassis which was Pontiac's compact. The Bonneville was the largest car they made. The Bonneville was 220 inches long with a 123 inch wheel base. The Tempest/GTO was 203 inches long with a 115 inch wheel base. That's a 5 inch shorter wheel base than even the Grand Prix or Catalina.
