Tamiya 1/12 Ferrari 312b
JohnnyK replied to IanH's topic in WIP: Other Racing: Road Racing, Land Speed Racers
Here is a nice detail for the wheels (this is a picture of a 1:1 Lotus): Notice the duct tape holding the balance weight to the wheel. First I cut a strip of lead from a wine bottle. Then I glued the strip to the wheel rim and add a piece of Bare Metal Foil to simulate duct tape. -

This is what I used on my ELF 6 wheeler I cut the insulation of a mouse cable into thin rings. I used the the rings to organize the ignition cables and the fuel hoses. The rings can be held in place by using a drop of white glue. -

Chris, I have a suggested solution for this question. Is it okay if I share my idea? John -

This is what I did when I built the exhaust system for my ELF 6 wheeler. I put Bondo glazing (red color) in the holes of the collectors. The Bondo temporarly held the exhaust headers and the collectors together while I adjusted the location of the headers. Once the headers were glued into the engine block I removed the Bondo and glued the headers to the collector. I also put the engine block into a clamp so that it wouldn't wiggle around. It worked great. -

I have built four "big scale" race cars. Assembling the exhaust headers, collectors and exhaust pipes is a major, major, major PITA!!! It's as if you need three hands. I don't understand why Tamiya didn't do a better job on engineering these exhaust systems. I like your system for keeping the exhaust headers organized. -
That looks like a fun kit. Have fun.

1934 Ford 5-Window Early 60's Altered

Great work so far! I have a suggestion for the wheels. I have started using Tamiya Panel Line paint on my model's wheels. It really highlights the molded details. -

I agree with you 100% Good reference photos are really important when building "big scale" cars. Details are very important. -

Very interesting. I'm watching. -
I used masking tape to follow the contour of the trunk lid. It is too bad that the two colors that I used for the model are no longer available. Testors made some nice colors a few years ago until Rustoleum's greed killed them off.

One day my wife and I were at the Volo Car Museum and Store which is about 40 miles north of Chicago. They have a lot of nice classic cars for sale: www.volocars.com I spotted this 1934 two-tone Ford for sale ($67,998). I thought that that would make a nice mode car. First I painted the Revell 1937 Ford with Testors' Diamond Dust. Then I painted the top of the car with Testors' Sapphire Blue Metallic. You may be wondering where are the rear view mirrors and the tail lights? I lost those during the build process. I doubt that the new Revell would have replacements.

HOLY COW!!!! That is one beautiful paint job ? You are the dude!

Super fantastic. If I may ask, what did you use for hose clamps? They add the perfect amount of "bling".

Nice looking model. Great job on the chrome trim. -
I dread painting models. Sometimes the results are really good and sometimes the results are not so good. I have no idea why that is.

Usually I paint my cars with lacquer. I used enamel on the Willys. I may be wrong, but it seems that enamel provides a shinier finish than lacquer.
-
I used rattle cans for the paint job. First, I put the cans in warm tap water. That seems to make the paint flow smoother. Or, maybe it was just my imagination.

I built this model a couple of years ago when Revell was still making fun car models. It is painted with a base coat of Testors Metallic Gold and a top coat of Testors Transparent Custom Red enamel. It's a nice kit and comes with a PE grill.

Really nice model. Great paint job. I love the magazines on the rear seat and the rugs on the front seats.

I have no idea why the intake manifold was repainted gold!! I think that a very inexpensive way to upgrade the appearance of this model is by installing braided hoses and aluminum hose fittings. The KA upgrade kit has some very nice PE parts. Note the PE on the sides of the oil cooler radiator. I usually don't post photos of my models on someone else's post, but I thought that my photo would be helpful. The KA aluminum exhaust pipes look way better that the plastic ones that are included with the kit. I know that the KA upgrade kit is expensive, but it makes a really nice kit so much better. I would suggest that you search the Internet for detail photos of the actual race cars. You can get some nice detailing information from those photos.
