Well I've tried 4 times now to update my thread and each time I'm getting 404 Error messages with any post with pics. Will have to try again later.
-
Yup, kit decals definitely have a curve to them that are not on the 1:1 stripes.
-
Personally I dont think they look that dark at all, I think you over stated how black they were. I've seen some panel lines where people actually take a black acrylic paint and paint the lines and those look way off. But yours seem fine. I know people say that real cars dont have black lines but when you look at the the depth of the panel lines it can literally create a black line pending on the light source. For what I see there, you were fine. I saw below that you fixed it and it still looks good.
-
And they're different in the kit too. The unplated parts look like the pic above and fit snug to the body. I'll post a pic of that later, but looks like they got that detail spot on.

I started a thread, no progress yet, but here are your pics Snake.

Ok, here's the sprue pics. Sorry not the best, just quick shots with the phone but good enough to take a closer look. You can see Chris' video here for a different look, and his build of the kit. In no particular order...I'll toss in a couple comments for the spures if I see something as I'm uploading these, I've not really inspected each sprue as of yet. Body bits....I LOVE the fact that they've added none chromed bumpers (cause I'm doing mine body colour matched. I HATE that they added the mirrors on an outside edge, not a big deal but another step to clip and clean and a chance to lose the part when it could be attached by the stem. Interior parts...all look decent no real complaints that I can see so far. Engine.... all looks good here too (sorry this one's a bit blurry) More interior.... again its all white plastic ( the whole kit is minus the chrome tree) which makes painting and detailing so much easier. I also love the fact that they have included sun visors. AAR exhaust and spoiler....I see some dimples in the mufflers, easy fix, not that big of a deal and the exhaust tips look like they need to be hollowed out. Engine top....everything here looks good.....carbs are fairly basic looking but you wont be able to see them anyways once the air cleaner is on. EDIT... the carbs are upside down on this sprue and once flipped over they're actually really nicely detailed (I'll try to remember to take a pic) not as nice as Fireball's stuff but really nice for a production kit, you could easily detail paint them and leave the air cleaner off for a nice look. Tires (and axle pins)......they're nicely cast, with no burrs or outrageous seams, but no lettering ( a let down for me, I thought with the Mustangs done they might have started a continuing trend) easy fix with decals or tire swap. Clear parts...I didn't open the bag to keep them safe, but if you watch Chris' video he mentions that the glass is a bit small on installation so check on that as you go. Decals...all look good so far, much better than the US release of the Ford GT Le Mans. They've included gauge decals which go on a clear piece from the backside of the dash which is nice. They've included those gawd awful faux wood grain that designers seemed to think was classy back in the late 60's and early '70's, a feature I completely hated (my preference). They also added seat belt decals which is a nice touch. Chrome...(again a blurry pic, sorry) I didn't open this as well, just to keep things nice but there are a lot of extra parts (the other Cuda) as well as chrome bumpers, so a choice, and extras for the parts box. The chrome looks good, no imperfections that I could notice with a quick look. Front suspension...nicely on its on sprue. More detail bits..... Firewall and rad support and other engine bay parts....(sorry another blurry pic) more nicely detailed parts (no flash on anything so far) Rear suspension.....wrong rear end, but those that have been following the other thread already know (for me, I can live with it) Interior tub....nicely cast and with it open like this makes it much easier to mask and paint (all kits should have the sides separate). Chassis pan.....nicely detailed and again very clean looking Hood, rear rollpan and leaf springs.....the hood pins are molded in but easily sanded off and PE one added if so desired (I'll be adding some on mine)...EDIT the hood pins are actually on the chrome tree, and super tiny, be careful when removing them, I almost lost one.... Body....Looks good to me, I know others have stated it's not 100% but much better than what's come before. No flash no terrible mold lines (yet). Body... I didn't take a good pic of the fender lips, but yes, they're much too pronounced, especially the rear. I'll be sanding mine down. Otherwise the body looks nice. Door panel lines will likely need some scribing so they aren't lost in paint. Sorry guys, much more long winded than I had originally intended. Time to get some work done.

Well I was picking through the paint stash and I have decided I'm going with a TS spray of the olive metallic that's been long discontinued by Tamiya. Of course I'm upstairs atm and totally forget the actual name but it's quite similar to this, but probably a bit lighter. Found the paint, its from the Mini line, called Olive Metallic. It's so old I can't even find an actual image online of it. Once I start taking pics of the sprues ( I'll take a shot of the can) but it doen't even have a TS#.

Well I woke up this morning to the mail man bringing me the new Revell 1970 AAR Cuda. With the weather being not very nice here today, I think after breakfast I'll dive into this and get some of the prep work started. I think I'll just go OOB on this one and down the road to a Gurney Trans Am car. Once I pop it open I'll do a mini review of what it looks like on the inside and my thoughts on it. I've watched Chris' Youtube video already so I already know what's in there and what's not to like. As stated in another thread the kit has the wrong rear end (tbh I would have never noticed) but for me the most glaring thing is the tires, they added the printed tires to the '69 Boss 302 but not this kit? Seems strange. I think I still have some Fireball Modelworks tire decals somewhere, so I'll just add those, or maybe some of the AMT parts pack tires if they'll fit the kit rims. I don't know which colour I'm going with yet, I'm trying to use up paints I have left over from past projects instead of buying new colours for one build and then have the rest of the bottle taking up space in the cabinet. I do like the purple on the box art but not sure if I have something like that on hand. I have some blues or reds I could use but that purple looks so nice with a white interior. Oh well, something to think about. I hope to have a real progress update later this afternoon.

Mine arrived today. Not bad, a week from the US vendor to Canada. Could have been 4 days if Canada Post was more organized, but still really quick. Now, do I do it stock or turn it into Dan's T/A car?

Do you have a pic of what it looks like now? Sometimes when we stare at things we make them look worse than they actually are.

All this yapping about the new AAR Cuda and I can't believe no one has posted that they scored one already or started a wip? I can't be the only one that has bought one? I'm hoping mine gets here by the end of the week. It left JFK on the weekend and is currently stuck in the abyss that is the Canadian Postal System. As for the rear end, would it be nice if it was correct? Sure, but lets face it, how many kits get released, even now a days, as new tools that are 100% perfect. The new Revell Ford GTLM, started life as the IMSA car with the camera pod on the roof and then was taken over by German, but no one thought to remove it before production, but update the decals to do the Le Mans car? And why do the 2017 car that finished 2nd, when they could have easily done the 2016 car which WON?????? Even Tamiya's Ford GT isn't perfect, they put those stupid vent decals over clear plastic instead of doing a small PE set, not a huge deal but, without the full engine it would have been nice. Even the new NSX which is a very detailed kit with the full engine in the back has those stupid vent decals instead of PE. I'm pretty happy with the looks of the Cuda, tho I'm more into modern race cars so I tend to be more critical of those than older cars.

I bought one yesterday but it's being shipped up from the States so will maybe have it by the end of next week. I'm sure someone else will have one in hand before that.

Airbrush "Spitting"
Jhedir6 replied to 69NovaYenko's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
I've got the same thing going on with my H&S Evo 2n1. I swapped out my needle/nozzle for the the smaller size that I dont use and the spitting stopped. I was also getting backwash into the colour cup causing the media to erupt out of the cup. The new needle/nozzle stopped the backwash too. I'd say its the seal on the back of your nozzle housing is letting air back into the brush. Swap out the seals. -
Ok so the pics of the US decals shown in this thread are NOT out of register. They are actually decent prints. The whole "out of register" came from a FB group of a guy that got one of the first US releases and his decals were definitely out of register. You can plainly see the mis-alignment of the colour layers. A few other have posted pics of theirs being the same way. Here are three pics from the guy off of FB that got some off register decals. He's not the only one. Note they're a bit blurry and not my pics. I do think the artwork on the US sheet is different too. The arrows for the slam locks are clearly printed off the locks on the US sheet and are red as opposed to the yellow on the Germany sheet. No idea why this would be because in 2017 when this car ran I don't believe that any of the slam locks had red arrows on them in either WEC or IMSA. Now in 2018 the Daytona cars had red arrows with a white outline, this is the 2018 24hrs of Daytona GTLM winner. You can see the red arrows on the locks, but the Revell kit is representing the 2017 Le Mans car so the sheet is wrong. And the arrow should be on the locks not pointing at them.
-
Just checked. Nope, the Germany sheet will fit in the standard Revell US box. I dont have the GT kit in the US box yet, but I assume its the same as all the other Revell US boxes. The sheet fits, not a lot of room around the outside but it can definitely move around.
-
Well done Paul. Looks great. I love the colour combo. First one of the Tamiya kits I've seen in this combo. You've inspired me to fix the clear on mine and get it wrapped up.
-
I'm gonna pick up some of the US kits when they likely hit Hobby Lobby (if they do) simply for the parts. I've got a couple more Fantasy liveries I want to do so the issues for the decals sheets wont bother me too much. Also there are a lot of aftermarket sets already and more to follow, Ford's suppose to be running 4 heritage liveries at Le Mans and Keating is running the Wynn's scheme, so there will be choices. Hopefully people doing these sheets will see the missing decals and add them in to their products so people that have US release can get the missing decals.
-
Yes, the box art pic is the same and they use different kit numbers but it's the same kit inside. Of course minus the decal issue, and the German release has a really nice colour instruction booklet, yes booklet, not the folded sheet US kits have.
-
Just by way of a quick comparison, now I did't search every site, you can see the minimal difference in price between the kits. Both from US online vendors. Tower Hobbies $23.99 US release https://www.towerhobbies.com/cgi-bin/wti0001p?I=LXLHML&P=ML Upscale Hobbies $25.95 Germany release https://upscalehobbies.com/1-24-1-25-race-cars/2244-revell-ford-gt-le-mans-124-scale-model-kit.html?search_query=ford+gt&results=373

There are some US vendors that have the German version in stock and the price is only a few $$ more than the US release. For the few extra $$, I'd definitely go with the German release. It's good you got a decent set of decals. A FB group I'm part of, a guy posted a pic and the register was off by a good 1-2mm. Doesn't sound like a lot, but when you see it, you can really see it.
-
I use Vallejo acrylic matte varnish. Put the decals on then top it off with the Vallejo, no issues. I usually do one coat, then another one or two more, after each coat before has dried for a few hours. Not NASCAR tires, but Powerslide tire details along with Tamiya kit decals on Tamiya tires. No harsh gases with acrylics.

^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^ What that dude said!!!!!!! So looking forward to some more new GT3 spec cars. The Audi, the Porsches, the BMW M8 (well not till next year likely). Now we need a Huracan and the new McLaren 720s, and the Aston Martin Vantage.
-
Nice that the 787 is molded in white, I love that. Too bad about the Le Mans decals, it definitely looks as if Tamiya and the FIA/ACO could not come to terms on the licencing for the LeMans/Total names to be used, which is just too bad. Either way, I've got the TSO50 and I'll get a couple of the 787's too I'm sure. Also the AMG, cause you can not have too many AMG GT3's with all the great liveries out there.
-
Oh great, now I have to buy more AMG's.....isn't 9 enough already Tamiya? Nice to see a new wheel set tho, but , I would have liked to have seen Tamiya include or swap out the enduro lights for a set of sprint lights, cause this car did run with both. The decal sheet looks fantastic.

Wouldnt be surprised if the 1/24 Supra were to follow later this year since they have the deal with Gazoo. Also wonder if the rally Toyota Yaris is a possibility too, Tamiya hasn't done a new rally car for a long while that I can think of (the Gazoo Toyota TRD 86) since they already did the RC car last year.
