Lets see, stalled projects... Well, there's my '49 Ford coupe with the chopped top... Or the '51 Chevy with the top chop and extended rear fenders... But the prize for my longest-stalled build has to go to my '49 Mercury, a rebuild of a glue-bomb AMT kit started in 1998.

'58 Impala- "Lemon Twist"... Finished 12/19

It definitely shines... I think it has more to do with my lighting setup for these pics than anything else. -
Great work on that Flintstone body- those aren't always the easiest to work with. Can't wait to see paint on her!

This is going to be a nearly OOB build of the Revell '58 Impala. Paint is Testors White Lightning with a custom mix of White Lightning and Inca Gold for the base yellow, The edges of the yellow panels were then fogged in Inca Gold. I still thought that it was "missing something" so I came back in with a stripe over the center of the roof and highlighted the body sides in a lighter yellow. It's all buried under a TON of Wet Look Clear. The wheels will be a set of flat-spoke mags (Keystones?) from the AMT '51 Chevy with SATCO narrow whites. It's going to have lakes pipes and a slight nose-down stance- the look will be pure mid-sixties. I might swap out the motor for the AMT '62 Impala 409, with its Offy valve covers. Enjoy the first pics...

Nice work, Rich. I remember some of these from old issues of SAE!

Here's one... Revell '48 Ford.

I'm going to go with model... it has that handcrafted large-scale Wingrovey feel to it. Of course if it were real it would be large and handcrafted as well...

I love this...

Thanks for the great feedback, guys. This build is a perfect example of why I love building customs- it's a safe bet that nobody will ever build a 1:1 like this one. For the next project I'm tackling a more recent kit of a slightly older subject... stay tuned!

They're the kit bezels, foiled then filled with thinned gloss black and a drop of Kristal Klear for lenses. This kit is a weird mix- some details, like the glass, are downright primitive, while others, such as the interior engraving, stack up pretty well to modern kits.

The wheels are the "Miami Vice" Daytona Borranis with an old set of SATCO goldlines I found in the parts box. Paint is Testors Emerald lacquer with the stripe done in White Lightning. I'd probably do the stripe in gold or copper if were to redo it now. Fitting the kit's optional square headlights was a nightmare- it took hours of trimming and filing and fitting to get them to sit level with each other. I do like the look of them, though. The interior wood is just Tamiya clear orange brushed over the same red-brown as the rest of the interior. The carpet is Detail Master flocking. The engine is the stock R3 type from the kit. I was going to to the dual-supercharged version but that wouldn't be accurate for a street- drivable car. There are actually ignition wires exiting the wiring shroud at the bottom.

It never fails to amaze me that ANY of these old Avanti kits ever got built... this was a rough one. The windshield is acetate due to the kit unit having a big ejector pin mark or something right in the middle. The kit seats were swapped for modified units from a Revell '68 Firebird... the kit seats looked like they were actually closer to 1/32 scale. All in all I'm quite pleased with the way this turned out- Studebaker should have produced an Avanti notchback. On to the pics!

Does anybody know offhand if Norm Veber (Replicas and Miniatures of Maryland) produces a tuck-n-roll interior for the Revell '37 Ford Cabriolet? I think I remember seeing one in a catalog for RMCM a few years back. I'm getting ready to build this one and do not want to use that '90s sculptured interior!

Miami Vice Daytona Spyder - built one?
jaymcminn replied to Jantrix's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
Rob, I built one of these when they first came out in the 80's. I kind of want to build one now, but I'd like to modify the body to better- replicate the McBurnie Daytonas used for the series. The body on the kit is actually more accurate for a "real" Daytona than a McBurnie replica- the windshield on the McBurnie car is the stock C3 Corvette unit and gives the car a different (and very cool) look. -
I'm pulling up a chair and nuking some popcorn...this is gonna be good.

starburst hubcaps?
jaymcminn replied to sobpinstriping's topic in Car Aftermarket / Resin / 3D Printed
I cut these down from a set I found in a Jada diecast '53 Cadillac a few years back. -
Definitely the roll bar. It just makes it look that much tougher.

This is too cool. I had a similar idea to build this kit using the Revell Midget Offy motor but realized what a pain that would be and dropped it. Your build makes me simultaneously glad I gave it up and curious as to how it would have turned out, although I suspect it wouldn't have turned out as nice as yours. Now hurry up and finish it!!!

Do you know who Norman E. Timbs is? Updated Dec 13, 2011
jaymcminn replied to Peter Lombardo's topic in WIP: Model Cars
I've been a fan of the Timbs streamliner for years, and your build is really impressive. The idea of mounting it semi-permanently to a base to provide power for electrics and the rear bodywork is interesting, too. Can't wait to see more progress on this one! -
You can't go wrong with Emberglo on a '66. Very pretty.
-
Breathtaking work so far, but I agree with Bill about that windshield. It actually looks a bit like a vintage speed boat with the height and lack of rake. Maybe a frameless wrap-around windshield?
-
IT'S GREEN! Next up I'll fog some highlights along the fenders and bodyline crease in white and blend them with candy green. I'm also going to do an asymmetrical stripe over the top of the car. The base color is Testors Mystic Emerald lacquer airbrushed. The color is pretty intense. there's a lot of flake in there that really "pops".

Stalled builds, hmmm? I've got a few that fit into this category... 1936 Ford, Monogram 1:24 scale bashed together with the Boyd Smoothster. MCG LaSalle grille, RMCM DuVall windshield. I have the bodywork about done, but haven't started priming yet. AMT '49 Ford coupe- Chop done (beautifully, if I do say so myself), side trim removed, and wheelwells radiused. Still trying to decide whether to do it shiny or suede. Still needs some filler and bodywork before primer. AMT '51 Chevy coupe- Top chopped, rear fenders extended, Modelhaus Buick grille. Very rough at this point- probably a few months' worth of work to get it finished. I'm probably going to pick up the '49 Ford for this CBP. I've been wanting to do something in a satin metallic and this might be the perfect build for that- I'll think I'll start playing around with this as soon as I'm done with my custom Avanti.

A Hirohata squarebird, huh? Nice!
