  2. That paint is amazing- the flake really brings out those curves. Good luck with the photoetch- have you thought about contacting Model Car Garage or another aftermarket company about doing a custom fret for you from your artwork?
  3. Tough call... you've put a lot of work into the Corvette frame already, but the setup might not be the most realistic, and you could wind up with fit issues further on in the build that will take more time and effort to fix. On the other hand, you'll have to put some work into swapping the suspension stuff onto the '54 frame, but it might make for an easier time later on in the build during final assembly. I'd go for the suspension swap, if it's not major surgery to do that on the '54 frame.
  4. It's not going to be scraping the ground or anything like that. The front will sit a little lower than the rear for a really nice traditional rake. I have a set of the dummy lakes pipes from a Revell '49 Merc that might go on, but I'm a little on the fence with that for right now. Thanks for the comment about the fade stripe in the center of the roof- I was a little unhappy with the look of the thing before I went back in and added that extra touch. As far as progress goes, I actually fabbed up an AMT Impala 409 with the Offenhauser valve covers and M/T tunnel ram intake, but it's just a little too mean to go in this one- Im going to save that particular motor for a '32 Ford project I'm kicking around in my head. The engine in this build will be the stock 348 with the custom finned valve covers, but I might scrounge around in the parts boxes for a different air cleaner or something to make the engine bay stand out some. Still on the fence about whether to paint the engine Inca Gold, in keeping with the sort of show-car look of the build, or to paint it in Chevy Engine Red. I've been mixing some test colors for the interior- the overall color will be a pale yellow with the seat stripes painted in white, brown, and gold. The carpet will be a flocked in a gold color from Ken's. I'm looking forward to getting some progress made the next few days- I'm finally getting a few days off after a week of crazy hours!

  7. Jeez, Doc, you've been slacking off... I expect to see another ten painted bodies by Christmas! Seriously, amazing work there, especially on that purple pond rescue '32. I really like the color on that one!
  8. I know how it is with those projects that fight you all the way- you're doing a great job on the kind of project that would send most modelers running away! (I should know- I contemplated putting an Offy engine into one of these for about ten minutes before I got a splitting headache and had to lie down) We're all pulling for you to get this one done!
  9. And yes, they're all in bare plastic- generally by the time I get primer on 'em I'm fully committed to finishing the build.
  10. Lets see, stalled projects... Well, there's my '49 Ford coupe with the chopped top... Or the '51 Chevy with the top chop and extended rear fenders... But the prize for my longest-stalled build has to go to my '49 Mercury, a rebuild of a glue-bomb AMT kit started in 1998.

  13. Great work on that Flintstone body- those aren't always the easiest to work with. Can't wait to see paint on her!
  14. This is going to be a nearly OOB build of the Revell '58 Impala. Paint is Testors White Lightning with a custom mix of White Lightning and Inca Gold for the base yellow, The edges of the yellow panels were then fogged in Inca Gold. I still thought that it was "missing something" so I came back in with a stripe over the center of the roof and highlighted the body sides in a lighter yellow. It's all buried under a TON of Wet Look Clear. The wheels will be a set of flat-spoke mags (Keystones?) from the AMT '51 Chevy with SATCO narrow whites. It's going to have lakes pipes and a slight nose-down stance- the look will be pure mid-sixties. I might swap out the motor for the AMT '62 Impala 409, with its Offy valve covers. Enjoy the first pics...

  18. Thanks for the great feedback, guys. This build is a perfect example of why I love building customs- it's a safe bet that nobody will ever build a 1:1 like this one. For the next project I'm tackling a more recent kit of a slightly older subject... stay tuned!
  19. They're the kit bezels, foiled then filled with thinned gloss black and a drop of Kristal Klear for lenses. This kit is a weird mix- some details, like the glass, are downright primitive, while others, such as the interior engraving, stack up pretty well to modern kits.
  20. The wheels are the "Miami Vice" Daytona Borranis with an old set of SATCO goldlines I found in the parts box. Paint is Testors Emerald lacquer with the stripe done in White Lightning. I'd probably do the stripe in gold or copper if were to redo it now. Fitting the kit's optional square headlights was a nightmare- it took hours of trimming and filing and fitting to get them to sit level with each other. I do like the look of them, though. The interior wood is just Tamiya clear orange brushed over the same red-brown as the rest of the interior. The carpet is Detail Master flocking. The engine is the stock R3 type from the kit. I was going to to the dual-supercharged version but that wouldn't be accurate for a street- drivable car. There are actually ignition wires exiting the wiring shroud at the bottom.
  21. It never fails to amaze me that ANY of these old Avanti kits ever got built... this was a rough one. The windshield is acetate due to the kit unit having a big ejector pin mark or something right in the middle. The kit seats were swapped for modified units from a Revell '68 Firebird... the kit seats looked like they were actually closer to 1/32 scale. All in all I'm quite pleased with the way this turned out- Studebaker should have produced an Avanti notchback. On to the pics!
  22. Does anybody know offhand if Norm Veber (Replicas and Miniatures of Maryland) produces a tuck-n-roll interior for the Revell '37 Ford Cabriolet? I think I remember seeing one in a catalog for RMCM a few years back. I'm getting ready to build this one and do not want to use that '90s sculptured interior!
  23. Rob, I built one of these when they first came out in the 80's. I kind of want to build one now, but I'd like to modify the body to better- replicate the McBurnie Daytonas used for the series. The body on the kit is actually more accurate for a "real" Daytona than a McBurnie replica- the windshield on the McBurnie car is the stock C3 Corvette unit and gives the car a different (and very cool) look.
