What kind of paint were you thinning with naphtha and why were you using it? Does it have some attribute "normal" thinners don't have?

I ordered a hand operated pad printer to try printing tire lettering, but have no experience with one. I also figured I'd get some insights on photo etching since the printing plates are etched. Do any of you guys use pad printing?? I expect a learning curve, but haven't the foggiest notion how steep it is. Is it something to love, or something to hate?

Got the "kit" parts all printed, but not satisfied with the tires yet. They are currently in resin and in two halves cut horizontally. I want to cast them in one piece soft urethane.

I have the following: Objet 30 Pro polyjet Formlabs 2 SLA Ultimaker 2+ filament Solus DLP Do all CAD models with Solidworks 2005 and run the STL files through Netfabb where I scale them and "fix" or optimize them.

Why do people dig up these old threads???
Flat32 replied to Force's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
I'm new to this forum and enjoying it immensely. Currently lurking daily just to become more familiar and find the old threads revived quite interesting and do well exposing the history that made this forum a very good one. Just wish the PB logo didn't show up so often in them. The off site search works very well and I don't care how old the info is if it's what I'm looking for. Ray Federowicz -
Been working on the chassis, but not finished. Have to model the front axle and steering box next. For such a simple car there's still a BLAH_BLAH_BLAH_BLAH load of details to make.

Wheels will change to real wire spokes since I can't print them to 1:25 scale. Chose this model because it is simple requiring the least number of detailing skills. I'm a novice at model building.

The car I'm trying to build is Dick Kraft's Bug, but the Flathead parts will also be used in a '32 3 window coupe when I get a Revell body sorted out and a decent '32 frame made. Painted parts are Molotow and my first ever painted parts.

What scale would be best?? I would like to include the workers and figure I could get old time clothes, dress a couple guys in them and 3D scan them in the appropriate poses.

What would YOU like to see as a model

Seems to me when the feds mandated 5 mph bumper requirements some ugly things happened to style. -
Looking at Pat's use of a photo is a technique I hadn't thought of before. Was just looking at lithophanes recently and it just occurred to me that if one wanted to reproduce that radiator with the distressed detail it can be relatively easy by 3D printing using the lithophane technique which allows you to go from a photo to a 3D printed object without scanning or computer modelling. All you need is a 3D filament printer readily available for under $400 and free Cura software.

I'm new to kit models so forgive my ignorance. What style of kit tires do your wheels fit? Are yours two piece? Any side view photos?

Been doing research for a build inspired by yours and thought you might find what I've found useful. Note dash was simulated wood on flat face. Also note there was polished stainless trim at bottom of side windows that kit doesn't show but really improves the look. Also not the dash gauges had peaked cone shaped lenses. Many different wheel treatments in the videos. Look at fifth one down first. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3Kz2hhrRf-A https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZIrUPLbz_Ys https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2wkwHhb8bUw https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9ltBcBxJ9tQ https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5K0-dtjwreE https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yCWNc-T1WSI

3D scanning and printing in lieu of casting
Flat32 replied to landman's topic in Model Building Questions and Answers
I don't sell my prints. Supports are tedious to remove from the 1:25 scale parts especially. Printer surprised me by successfully printing the water jackets in the heads and block at this scale. Manifold has the internal runner passages. I was perfectly happy printing 1:16 as my smallest, before I got on this forum with your TDS scale. I'm inspired by Pat's F&B engine shop. I love dioramas, but, like food, some are under cooked and some overdone on the distressing. F&B is on target in my book. -
I ordered a couple of these kits and I'll be scanning the dash and 3D printing mirror image lefthand version. When done I'll send you one if you want.

3D scanning and printing in lieu of casting
Flat32 replied to landman's topic in Model Building Questions and Answers
I have a Sense 3D handheld scanner that I bought new for $450. Just ordered a XYZ handheld for $179. I don't scrimp on printers. I have had bad teeth and bad work done on them. I chose my new dentist wisely and chose one that is very tech savvy. Helped him to decide what 3D printer to buy, paid him a lot of money for extensive dental work, and schmoozed my way into his onsite dental lab. I use dental tools and have made my own alginate impressions and cast models of my teeth which I mounted in an articulator. I study everything like a dog on a bone. -
Oh my GOD! I had four Toyota Corolla coupes at one time in Taiwan years ranging from 1971 to 1974 and I simply loved them. They were all 1166 cc.. Picked the best of the lot and restored it. Never knew there was a kit. Immediately bought two on ebay and one on Amazon. I'll be watching your build closely.

I have a dream of creating a diorama depicting the Ford Flathead engine block casting line shown in this video https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Xa0PAg7FfMk . Whole video is interesting, but I'm looking at the section between the 4:00 and 7:00 minute marks. I already have computer models of the block and sand cores that I've printed. Will be doing the flasks at some point. Lacking diorama making skills it's just a dream of mine. If anyone here would like to tackle this I'd be willing to donate the parts I make at whatever scale is chosen.

The French Ford Flathead
Flat32 replied to rel14's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
Was more or less an 8ba with the early style integral bell housing. They were 239 cu. in., however there may have been a 255" version with 4" stroke. They were not the big block like was in the Lincoln and F-8 ford trucks. -
Where might I find visual reference to what he has done??
