1963 Fred Lorenzen Ford
MarkJ replied to MarkJ's topic in Stock Cars (NASCAR, Super Stock, Late Model, etc.)
Yes, Jim. They actually talked about him going over the 100,000-dollar mark in the YouTube video I used and posted in the wip. Thanks for the kind words about the build. -
1963 Fred Lorenzen Ford

Thanks, Pierre. The paint could have been more homogeneous. too many coats on some panels and not enough on others but basically it was about as good as I could have hoped for. Thank goodness this is the last pearlized paint job I will do. The hood pins are just 32-gauge wire tied in a knot and trapped between a rod and a disc then glued on the hood or trunk. Thanks again for the nice words. they are always appreciated. -

The wip for it is in the wip section under 1963 Super Torque Ford. Click on it for the Start to finish for the build. -
Finally finished this one. Been working on it since April. It's supposed to represent the 1963 Southern 500 Livery, but it's basically done using only reference pictures from a you tube video from that race. So, the accuracy of it is debatable.

Thats one thing I am not is organized. Look at any picture in my wips and see the messy work area I have going on. It's surprising I get anything done. -

Bob, I had been doing a good job with the logs till this project, but it is basically the same as the Fireball Ford. I did the exact same things for both of the builds. -

Thanks, Jim. It was one of my holy grails when I did it a few years ago. Kinda like Fireball's Ford and now Fred's Ford. -

Just finished the future so I'm officially calling this one done. Now I just need to take the final photos and move on to the next project. Somewhere along the way I forgot to make entries into the model logbook, so I don't have a number of hours spent on this one. Things got a little hectic there when we were finishing up the selling of my mother in laws house 5 hours away. I will have a start and stop date for it though. Seems like it took forever. -

It's finished except for the final coat of Future or whatever they are calling it nowadays. Below is an in progress shot of the decaling process showing the laser white underlays and the inkjet top color decals. -

Thanks, Jason. It's been a struggle at times. I will be so glad when it is finally done. It seems the Fireball 63 Ford was a lot easier back in the day when I built it. I always wanted to do this build so I could have the sister car to Fireball's car that day. Fireball had the fastest car overall in Qualifying, but he missed the first day, so he didn't start on the pole. Lorenzen did. Fireball won the race and Fred came in second. During the race Junior had the fastest car which I also built. It fell out around the 400-mile mark with engine failure, overheating as the Chevy 427's liked to do back then. Below is the Junior Livery for the 63 Southern 500. -

Finally got the build part finished and started decaling. Basically, have to decal the car twice because I had to make white underlay sheets because the car is not white, and the numbers and letter decals have white outlines. Most Lorenzen cars have light blue outlines. This one doesn't. Also, the contingencies would not have looked right without white underlays. -
Alfa Romeo 8C 1933 Le Mans winner
MarkJ replied to Pierre Rivard's topic in WIP: Other Racing: Road Racing, Land Speed Racers
If you're going by the black and white photo at the beginning of this thread, it seems to me if the red parts are truly red and I'm sure they are it must be a very dark red. The monotone shade of the wheels seem to be an exact match to the fenders. Usually, a red in a black and white photo turns out to look like a dark gray just like a blue would. Just saying . But what do I know? Too bad they don't have color YouTube videos of those races which I know is impossible but that's usually the only true source in trying to decipher color of a race car from the 50's or 60's. But those are even very hard to find. -

Gas cap and hood and trunk pins. Trying hard not to forget anything. I still need to make an overflow tube for the gas tank. -

Don't know how I missed this one. First thing that grabbed me was the excellent metallic paint job. Very clean overall appearance. I agree that dull coating the tires will improve the lettering immensely. I would not attempt to remove the decal material around the letters. That would be a very daunting task. Buying a new goodyear tire decal sheet would be a much better choice than that. I'm thinking Power slide makes a pretty good sheet with many choices on it. -

Yes, Bob, there are only a couple of us left to do the 50's and the 60's. I always wanted to do The Fonty Flock 1952 Oldsmobile winner of the 1952 Southern 500, but kits or resins for that car are like gold to find. And I'm sure Salvinos will never get into those decades. -

Thank you so much for that tip, Bruce. I'm sure it will come in handy. -

So true Bob. Thats why if your lucky enough to find a YouTube video it can solve a lot of questions you might have about a particular race.
