  1. Tucked away in an article about the Monterey Historic races was this '69 Jaguar XKE. It was deemed "weird", which of course immediately drew me to it!
  2. '59 Buick LeSabre low rider. HRM December 2002
  3. Honest Charley manufactured Ford flathead V8 motorcycle. Kool and old Skool! Another shot
  4. '69 Mustang convertible done by Comp Cams, and containing a Robert Yates NASCAR motor. Just a beautiful car that would be fun to own/ fun to build. HRM November 2002
  5. Yet another cool car in an advertisement. HRM October 2002 Known as the 2002 Ridler Memorial Award winner '35 Chevy "Grandmaster" by Chip Foose and his newly created company. Check out https://www.chipfoose.com/grandmaster/ for ideas on how to do this build.
  6. As I was looking over the last of the 2002 issues of HRM, I came to the realization that Frankenstude never got an article when it was revealed. Custom Rodder had done a reveal in March '98, and Rod & Custom followed suit in August '99, but nothing from Hot Rod Magazine. This was interesting, since HRM had been following the design and build of the car since its inception in 1991. I can only assume that that the decision was made to shuttle it to Petersen sister publication R&C for internal reasons. BTW; as I have been going through HRM and doing a little research here and there, I have found myself quite enamored by Rod & Custom magazine! Perhaps someone more in the know can elaborate as to how this publication came about, and how Petersen differentiated between the sister publications. In the meantime though, for anyone looking to get inspired to do a build, I couldn't think of a much more inspiring car! One of the perks of living in a car town is that the actual car resides right in my neighborhood!
  7. Another ad that got my attention. HRM August 2002 And yet again, a fascinating car. This one a '55 Chevy Nomad called "Newmad" by Chris Ito. One article said that about 24,000 hours went into building Newmad! Isn't that incredible? Here is a good link for anyone interested in finding out more about this car: https://m.roadkillcustoms.com/newmad-1955-chevrolet-nomad-custom/
  8. '52 Willys Aero Ace hot rod. HRM August 2002
  9. Dean Bryant '49 Mercury article HRM July 2002
  10. Here was a little shout-out to Deco Rides on their fiberglass body. HRM June 2002 Interesting how the company came about, and equally interesting how this body style came to be. DecoRides.com is still kicking, as is their sister site DelahayeUSA.com Both sites have fascinating projects that are inspiring for builders of all scales: Bugnotti Boattail (the website gives Chip Foose credit for the initial design) Purple Zephyr ("Scrape" clone of course) Lockhart Boattail Speedster Deco Liner and Scoot Bella Figura Coupe Matching Boat and Car
  11. An ad with an awesome custom. HRM June 2002 Turned out to be the Boyd Coddington "Lead Zephyr" - - - Stunning!
  12. HRM April 2002 had a small blurb on the upcoming Pontiac Solstice. Interestingly, this car was built on the GM Kappa platform, and shares lineage with a diverse group of family members: Saturn Sky Opel GT Daewoo G2X turbo Tauro Sport Auto V8 As well as a host of concepts: Breckland Beira V8 Saab Sonnet Saab Aero X Chevy Nomad (I think this would have been so cool!) Saturn Curve Vauxhall VX Lightning I have not found any scale models of the Kappa platform to date, although Maisto did make 1:24 and 1:18 scale diecasts.
  13. I can't wait to see it! I love anything that is Allison powered
  14. Some common intake/carb combos. HRM January 2002
  15. This one's for @Claude Thibodeau and the lovers of all things Bonneville Salt Flats (of which I am becoming one!) List of 20 fastest. HRM December 2001
  16. Bunch of cool concepts from the 50's and 60's. HRM November 2001 '64 Pontiac Banshee '53 Chrysler Thomas Special '57 Ghia Dart Diablo '53 Buick Wildcat '55 Chrysler Falcon (my favorite)
  17. Will keep looking for follow-up articles...
  18. This little article about Tom Gale and his roadster was intriguing. HRM September 2001 Turns out Tom Gale was responsible for a lot of the great concept coming out of Chrysler and Plymouth during the 90's and 2000's - including the Viper and Prowler. And his personal roadster was no slouch either!
  19. I had posted some photos elsewhere in this forum regarding a Hot Rod Magazine article in 2000, and particularly liked a Hot Wheels car that was coming out called "Bizarro". I included a bunch of photos of Bizarro from other sources, and ordered one in 1:64th scale to use as a reference for a build. As far as I can tell, the car maybe started life out as a '57 Cadillac Eldorado (?). I have obtained one of the Atlantis kits and will see how it goes...
  20. Two part coverage of the Ford Forty-Nine Concept car. HRM July and August 2001 BTW; AutoArt made a beautiful 1:18 scale diecast of this car!
  21. This was one of those moments where I remember exactly where I was when it happened. Some time afterwards, I bought the Revell 1:18 diecast of Dale Earnhardt's last ride - with the distinctive air dams, etc. I am not a NASCAR aficionado, but the car seemed like an accurate representation. Here is a photo of mine: This car still seems to be fairly accessible on the used market. I also noted that at least one model builder on this forum built his own scale model, although I couldn't see pictures of his work as the links did not work for me. I would think a good starting point for such a tribute build would be the Revell 2001 Monte Carlo kit.
  22. HRM June 2001 was all about muscle station wagons: '57 Mercury Montclair Voyager '59 Chevy Kingswood '65 Chevelle two door '65 Plymouth Belvedere '65 Pontiac Tempest custom (my favorite)
  23. The cover of HRM February 2001 just begs to be a poster! The car is a '40 Ford Deluxe Business Coupe called "Sherry Lou" Just stunning photos in the article
  24. How many of us remember the "Yugo" (for that matter, how many of us remember "Yugoslavia"?) I barely remember them, and here an article in HRM January 2001 about a Yugo turned into a racer! At first it seems incongruous, but upon further reflection - - - a cheap and light car tuned to its owner's best ability for the joy of going fast might very well be the definition of what a "hot rod" is all about. I think I'm going to have to see if I can find a Yugo scale model, and maybe an old map of where Yugoslavia was...
