Model Weight....
Junkman replied to SuperStockAndy's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
There are no variables whatsoever. If the real tank weighs 35 metric tons, it's scale weight in 1/35 is 0.81 kg or 1.78 lbs if you prefer old money. -
Model Weight....
Junkman replied to SuperStockAndy's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
Correct. It wouldn't weigh 1 pound. It would weigh (1/25th ft x 1/25th ft x 1/25th ft) x 25 pounds. And that's 0.0016 pounds. For more realistic figures: A cu ft of steel really weighs 490 pounds. A cube 1/25th it's size would be 0.48 in x 0.48 in x 0.48 in. A cube with less than half an inch edge length doesn't weigh 1/25th x 490 pounds, i.e. 19.6 pounds. It weighs (1/25th ft x 1/25th ft x 1/25th ft) x 490 pounds. And that's 0.03 pounds, roughly 14 grams. -

Rules are rules and there is nothing snobbish or elitist about them. -

Model Weight....

Add the weight of the Dixie flag decal on the roof and the entire calculation is out of the window. -
A most annoying trend is making the round over here. Some juvenile gits fit a device to their 0.9 Litre naturally aspirated 40 PS Twingos and Saxos, that simulates the hiss of the wastegate of a turbocharged rally car. Complete with a little cloud of steam, which AFAIK is generated with water from a water bottle that needs to be kept filled.

Model Weight....
Junkman replied to SuperStockAndy's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
The exact result with my formula is 0.24096 lbs, so I'd consider it close enough. I have a Ph.D. in physics, if that counts for anything, and I say you are correct. -
Most Expensive Car Crash Ever?
Junkman replied to Nate's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
It is not the most expensive car crash ever, it actually ranks on the cheap side. I'd say the 240-car crash on the Autobahn 2 near Braunschweig was more expensive. A lot more. 3 Million Dollars damage are caused by nearly every truck crash. -
Model Weight....
Junkman replied to SuperStockAndy's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
It's a bit more complicated. weight, being proportional to volume, scales as the cube of length. If typical lengths on the actual car are 25 times the model lengths, then its weight will be 253= 15,625 times the model's weight. In other words, the correct 1:25 scale weight of a 3765 lbs Camaro would be ca. 0.25 lbs. -
When I was a young lad, I regularly had a table at the Munich model car swap meets in the BMW canteen. Of course, those were 99% diecast. I got so annoyed by people lifting my models from the table and utter this dismissive 'ah, plastic', that I once glued one to the table. Many tried to lift it, but gave up when it appeared 'too heavy' for them. Since then, there is a table with four glue spots on it in the BMW canteen.

Geoff, your Moggy looks fantastic. Can you tell me more about this Meguiar stuff? Do you use the spray on, or the paste?

Does this mean metallic bronze?

I thought they drive a mile to the gym, run two miles on a conveyor belt, then drive back home.

Round2Models now OWNS AMT/MPC/Polar Lights!
Junkman replied to larrygre's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
It will all come back. The writing is on the wall. Numerous industries have already started to return manufacturing to the 'first world'. -
Maybe Mat Irvine's site would interest you: http://www.smallspace.demon.co.uk/ Despite not strictly on NASA, he used to be a professional modeller for the BBC. He built practically every space and sci fi studio model for more than 30 years. He even wrote a few books on space (and car) modelling. this is one of them:

I paint the entire inside of a body (except for the headliner of course) flat black, the same goes for the upper side of a chassis, the outside of an interior, the back of a dashboard, etc. Not one square millimetre remains unpainted on my models. I even paint the back sides of chrome parts flat black. I also paint the contact surface between the tyres and rims to avoid any chemical reaction between the two. This has served me well, no reaction ever occurred on my models in over 30 odd years.

Today I hauled a load of rubbish to the local recycling park. I'm not going often, but when I'm there, I can't avoid to peep into the scrap metal container. Low and behold, I found this in it: A bit more rummaging yielded this pouch: It was in close proximity to the bike, hence my assumption is they got dumped at the same time and belong together. I already have a set of tyres for it lying around (this is where my rubber fetish comes in handy): The bike has a Sturmey Archer 3-speed, which obviously works! Even the dynamo lighting works, front and rear. The brakes work, too. I guess the only reason it got thrown out is the flat tyres. I will replace the tyres with the ones I've shown, they are 20 x 2.125 instead of the 20 x 1.75 that are on it now. For the rest, I will just give it a thorough clean and polish, that's it.

Now that would leave us in a right karfuffle, would it not. However, there is a newfangeld fad in British English which already made it into the print media. I haven't seen it in American texts yet, but it has become annoyingly prevalent over here. They use the wrong grammatical person, i.e. gender. It goes like this: The girl went to the shop. She bought... No, we keep our beer in the pub.
