1966 Buick Skylark nostalgia type thing
Daryl Romain replied to Daryl Romain's topic in WIP: Drag Racing Models
Thanks. I have a thing for Buicks. I've had a 1/1 1987 Turbo Regal for about 25 years. -
I used what I had on hand. I'm working on several projects at the same time. Under this '68 is going a '66 dirt track chassis. It fits without any adjustment. Maybe it shouldn't have, due to the 3" difference in the wheelbase, but it did. It is somewhat lacking in detail but I can remedy that somewhat. The '69 Skylark I have on order will get an Amt 70 Chevelle chassis and interior bucket. Again, that's what I have on hand. None of these cars is a 100% stock build. All are modified in some way, so I'm not going to be a real stickler for detail.

Nailhead and powerglide from an original '66 annual, 3D printed twin turbos, Chevy LS intake and fuel injection and Dana rear. Front of the chassis is from a 2015, or so, Camaro, firewall back is Amt 'Petty" Dart, going to go unibody with just a rear subframe like a MoPar. Used this stuff because I had it, and could make it fit without too much work. Body is a new dirt track kit. Front wheelwells are from a '67 Chevelle, rears are Monogram 1/24 '66 Chevelle pieces, because they're bigger. Cage, door panels, probably 2 seats and some wheelie bars, maybe.

I'm pretty sure they went from 116" to 112 then, but I've found it doesn't show up in 1/25, or maybe I'm just making slight adjustments. Can't remember. This is an unaltered '66, although dirt track chassis, under this '68 body. That's what I had. If I were starting fresh, I'd use a 68 Chevelle donor.

Pretty sure this is an old Perry's Resin body. Uses the interior, and shortened chassis of an Mpc '79 El Camino glue bomb rebuilder. Motor is a Salvino nascar small block Chevy. Recent build.

It wasn't hard. It had already been converted although incorrectly. The roof was already cut. When the paint was stripped, I recut along the now visible cut lines, put stuff back where I thought it should go. Exaggerated the height on the scoop just a tad, just because, lol. It represents a mildly customized, not dead stock body, car. Didn't have the parts to build it 100% stock.

I think any of the above should work, actually any GM intermediate chassis from 66 to 72 should , without too many complications. The 66 & 67 have a different rear window so they wouldn't be rear glass donors. I have a 69 Skylark body on order. It's donor will be an Amt '70 Chevelle kit that is a duplicate.

I shaved the sides of the chassis slightly. I shaved the inside of the rocker panels on the body. Shaved the sides of the interior. Thanks. I did shorten the chassis about 1/4" near the firewall. It's a 1/25 body and a 1/24 chassis and interior.

One of my holy grail kits was a gift from model buddy L Leslie Curtis. JoHan nascar body and he was nice enough to provide a fresh 69 Torino donor kit. Neither one of us realized the original builder had done a fastback to notchback conversion, which I had to redo. The rear window opening wasn't vertical enough. Made a hood and scoop, replaced an A pillar, grafted in a 79 El Camino rear bumper and made a rear lower valance from a 1/24th scale Iroc bumper. I think the El Camino bumper is upside down, on purpose, can't remember. Amt 69 Torino windshield, interior, motor and chassis, with a few tweaks. The blue wire sticking up became the fuel line.

Too Many Projects body. Modified Monogram GSX interior and chassis. I think the wheels and tires are from a Lamborghini kit.

Perry's Resin kit that I've had for decades. Amt 1966 Skylark dirt tracker chassis, because that's what I had. Monogram GSX rims.

What do you drive?

1987 Regal, Turbo, T type, T tops. All the usual tricks, chip, 160 thermostat, air intake, K & N cone air filter, adjustable wastegate, larger capacity fuel pressure regulator, gutted cat and shift kit. Goes like stink. 139K on the original motor and turbo. Did head gaskets at 122K. The Plymouth is faster. -
