George , I do think A M T absorbed S M P . The factory was in a very close proximity to the A M T Troy factory. seems likely they did .......... -

AMT/SMP history lesson wanted

Welllllllll, it's kina like dis . S M P , ( Scale Model products ) had a few contracts with General Motors to do Promotional cars . Aluminum Model Toys , ( A M T ) had a great distribution system . By allowing A M T the use of the S M P Logo, A M T sold the kits via their network of wholesale distributors in through 1961. Similar situations occurred between A M T and cross town rival Model Products Corporation . One such example was the 1928 Ford Model A tudor which was the basis for the Ford Model A roadster truck and the Ford wagon , ( Woody ). Johan also stepped in with their Olsmobile Toronado kit in 1970. -
Glen, seriously , in the waning days of the original Jo- Han company, I saw lots of differences in the way kits came to what was his retail market . You could ask a distributor for something and maybe if you were lucky, actually get something . Same went with Ex- ell too. You got what was in the where house . To me , it was probably the darkest swan song for a model kit company ever written . Ed Shaver

Well, A M T Trophy series comes to mind as their 1959 issue of a 1932 ford Roadster is what really was a basis for a lot of competition down the road .Then A M T started , and never finished a small series of Indianapolis;formula I one cars , ( Watson Roadster and the Lotus Powered Ford ). Jo-han countered with their Cadillac and then a Mercedes - Benz . Of Course Revell had Ed Roth's creations , Monogram countered with Daryl Starbirds cars . Even Aurora had a couple of interesting pieces such as their Studebaker Avanti and a James Bond 007 machine . Ed Shaver
