AMT Ford L-Series Tire Size?
37 caddy replied to Fabrux's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
The 11.00 X 22s are from the freightliner, autocar, roadboss kits,They would work if you had the right size rims for them. All of the louisville kits had the 10.00 X 20 size tires, the tandems too.Shouldnt be too hard to find some 20 inch tires, most of the other AMT kits used them. Harvey -

California Hauler paint & decals
37 caddy replied to Superpeterbilt's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
If you had 2 sets of them you could apply 1 over the other and then the color should be true, they are sort of transparent, that is why they dont look real white,Or as someone mentioned is to paint the white under them,if you were using base coat/Clearcoat the base is very thin and would not leave much of an edge,i would just put on a mist coat of white and it would help with the decal not bleeding through,Spray both colors and apply the decals then clearcoat it,it would really pop in the sun. Peterbilt 359 from AMT kit
37 caddy replied to Roadrunner's topic in WIP: Model Trucks: Big Rigs and Heavy Equipment
most of the peterbilt motors back then were painted white from the factory, supposed to make it easier to find the oil leaks. Harvey -
Peterbilt 359 from AMT kit
37 caddy replied to Roadrunner's topic in WIP: Model Trucks: Big Rigs and Heavy Equipment
I wouldnt worry too much about the engine,as the hood is fixed to the front bumper.it doesnt , tilt anyway?.Has always been one of my peeves about this kit,Has anyone come up with a easy way to make the hood tilt?. harvey -
Ebay is a giant scam now, there is no end in sight for their greed.Their sales have been dropping so they are trying to up their revenue by gouging everyone,in the "old days" it was simple, buy something, get a shipping price and away the box went, now the shipping has to be displayed, the only way you can do that is to have local pickup only?,I live in Canada so i cant even give a pricefor them?.Dont even get me started on this "international shipping",the extra charges, who gets that, the seller,Ebay or is it going to the Feds?,if i get a tax receipt, then i could live with it,but if Ebay is just pocketing the money, then i dont think it is right.Any other canadians have any experience with this yet?, i just bought a part for my wifes car,it had 17.00 extra charges on it?,havent got it yet but am intereted in how it will work out?.Harvey

The GMC astro or the Chevy Titan are pretty easy to get right, they have a easy hinge setup and the cabs are 1 peice. Also the IH kits are easy to assemble, they are a little more pricey, but are worth it.One of the harder ones is the Peterbilt cabover, the cab is 1 peice but the tilt hinges are tough to do,the K123 is tough also, the only one with the multi peice cab is the Freightliner cabovers, not impossible but a little harder, but make a nice truck when done.I made all these when i was 12-15 years old,and i didnt mind them at all. Where to get 1/25 straps for a flatbed
37 caddy replied to Petetrucker07's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
another thing to use is 3M automotive masking tape,it comes in yellow, green and tan colors,it has a similar texture as the real straps do?,stick 2 peices together and cut it to the desired width and there you go,on the end where it is sticky it can be used to hold onto the clips on the ends. Harvey -
The easiest way to tell the two cabs apart is by the door handles, the earlier one from AMT has the paddle type handles, and the revel one has the flush type,it will make it easier if you find one in a pile someplace?. Harvey

Looks like the lowboy is on there too.It has been out a few times over the years as well.

Great news for sure, the only bad thing is the hood does not open,it has no hinges?,the hood and front bumper are glued as one piece.hated that part when I made one 35 years ago.. but will have to try one again,

You could look at the AMT 57 cameo kit,it has a straight front axle, that is very similar to what these vans would have had.also the frame and the running gear in the kit is similar to a van ?,the kit has the 265 V8,it has the ram horn manifolds,i think some of the later vans had V8 power?.Another kit is the AMT 50 chevy 3100 it has a straight 6 in it.it is a older motor then the van ones, but could be made to look the same.Harvey

AMT Peterbilt 359 Cali. Hauler ?
37 caddy replied to Old Buckaroo's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
The easiest way to tell the bare cabs apart is by the door handles, the early one has the wing style exterior door handles, the later one has the flush mount ones in the lower section of the doors. The hoods were very similar, however the early one did not have the hinges,it was attached to the front bumper, which was also a narrow style, not the deep bumper that the later one had, Harvey -
Ive seen that one also,i see it on ebay some?always wondered what it was like inside,do you have a cab from a titan or kenworth to compare it too?.i have seen some other IMAI kits, they have a kenworth cabover too?.Anyone else have one to show?. Harvey

Another neat place to look for different stuff like this is at the Dollar stores, they have all kinds of kitchen appliance type of stuff, even in the craft section there can be some goodies. Harvey

If you google international conco trucks, and when it comes up hit the images button at the top of the page, all you will see is the pictures of them,i find it is a easier way to see what you are looking for as opposed to reading and clicking on each pages,i just did and there were a lot of them on there. question about the Ford car-hauler cab
37 caddy replied to jeba's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
The lines would run down the back of the cab and run uner the floor and hook to the compressor on the motor,The AC lines are really quite complicated, but in this scale anything goes?.They would exit straight out the back of the box on the roof,You could use any of the other boxes too, back in the day they used to run what ever would fit,you see a lot of custom stuff back then.Have you ever been to Hanks Tuck Pictures,it is a great spot for pictures of this kind of stuff. -
Need some help on a Kenworth
37 caddy replied to Evilbenny's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
The long wheelbase is because that same kit was used in the tyrone Malone trucks, they were race truck haulers with the deck on the back It is easy to shorten it up when you are building it.,AMT was good at using the same kit in many variations at any time.Back in the day when these trucks were new,i don't think you could have used them that long,as a lot of states had length laws as to how long the truck and trailer could be,today it is different and you see a lot of long rigs. 50-70 dollars sounds about right for these kits,Myself I am hoping this is one that will be reissued?,so I wouldn't buy too many at a inflated price. Harvey -
you would heat up the plastic sheet the decals are on,it is just to make it a little more bendable to wrap around the cab?,not a lot of heat, just enough to warm up the plastic,it should not hurt the plastic in that much heat.Chances are the decals have lost their stickiness from time too, these kits are from 1983?.

question about the Ford car-hauler cab
37 caddy replied to jeba's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
The radio on the ceiling is just a AM radio, that is where they used to put it then, when this truck was new we didn't have FM.The AC box on the roof is supposed to have 2 hoses going to it,it is the condenser, the cold air would come from the dash vents, the compressor mounts on the motor someplace, all that is in that box is a small radiator.the legs should be 4 rubber mounts?.The roof top units in the 359 pete kits was more self contained, they had vents that came in a hole in the roof, but this type is different. As for filling in the cab sides, you could if you like,I think the biggest problem with this kit is the way the cab mounts,i think it should be different then it is? Good Luck -
If the decals are on a sheet of hard plastic they are the press on type, when I had mine I was not able to use them, they were to hard to use. They worked on the smooth parts of the cab,but would not let go from the sheet on the curves and rivets?.I think back and think I maybe could have used a heat gun to warm up the sheet,it would have made it a little softer to press down tight, you will have to cut out each piece separately to make it easier to position on the cab.Try a little piece first and see if the heat will help, that is the only thing I can think of,maybe use the heat when trying to press it down too.Let us know if this helps. Harvey

I had the very same kit back in the early 80's when it came out,i could not get the decals to work at all. They were beautiful looking stripes and I could not for the life of me get them to work,Maybe some others here have had better luck.I know this is no help, but it brought back a memory for me. you might be able to check some of the aftermarket body panel catalogs,or even car-part.com to get a interchange on some of the stuff,There are a lot of different models of each kind of vehicle too.some of the parts are the same and others are year specific. What exactly are you needing these for ?. harvey
