One final detail. I stumbled across these picture hanging nails at a local dollar store. The ribbed spacers looked promising for some modeling use, so I snatched them up. I've since seen the same nails at some hardware stores. The other item is of course, a piece of taillight sprue. I cut a small section of the clear red plastic and chucked it up in a Dremel. Before turning on the Dremel, it was used as a vice to hold the plastic while an X-acto knife was used to whittle out the rough shape of a bullet taillight. Then, the Dremel and some increasingly finer grits of sandpaper was used for final shaping and polishing. The nail spacer was painted with some bright silver and the two pieces were glued together. Here's the result; Caddy taillights and she's done

The center of the drive shaft was replaced with aluminum tube, capped off with the original u-jointed ends. Some Model Masters magnesium followed with a darker wash helped give this part a bit more character. Here's tha chassis almost finished; only lacking the rear suspension arms and plumbing. The base paint is hardware store black primer over a salted ruddy primer base. This was followed up with some various earth tone chalk powder. I added straps for the gas tank and scratched it up a bit in the direction of travel. Wheels are from the Revell 67 Chevelle pro street kit. I drilled out the Chevy emblems and then stripped the kit chrome. The finish is craft store spray chrome. It tones down enough to look a lot like polished aluminum. Not shown in the picture, I later added lug nuts and valve stems. Some homemade resin finned drums were added to the front wheels along with some spare backing plates (not shown)

A few more details for the engine compartment. One of the easier things to scratch build; hydraulic master cylinders. These consist of three different sizes of round styrene rod. After mounting the parts on a strip of flat styrene to serve as a flange, some Metal Masters silver aluminum plate and matte black finished them off. A short strip of square styrene rod was used for a fuel block with brass tubing for outlet fittings. The Revell kit comes with a voltage regulator. I added an aluminum base and some wiring to finish it off. After sizing up some small diameter brass rod for radiator supports, this pretty much wrapped up the engine compartment.

Rising from the grave. 'bout time to get this WIP put to bed. Here's a part that didn't make it into production. Alot of rat rods have the big and tall motor look. With that in mind, I thought about adding an air box/air filter on top of the carbs. The basic shape was made from scrap styrene C-channel and flat card stock. The box was covered with .005" aluminum with faux rivets. The finished part just didn't quite do it for me; didn't look squared up, and the metal seams didn't look right.

This could have been just another build, but not in your hands. A really beautiful rendition of a Fisher Body masterpiece. You are the master when it comes to chrome trim. I have to wonder how many guys are digging through their stash this weekend to see if they have a 66 Impala.

Flamin' Candy Red T-Bucket
Alyn replied to Bernard Kron's topic in WIP: Model Trucks: Pickups, Vans, SUVs, Light Commercial
Very nice and tidy T, Bernard. One of the best application of flames I've seen in a while. Your photo style really sets it off as well. Nicely done! -
Need some advice on Testors silver paint
Alyn replied to nork's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
Many touchpads depend on the ability to sense the capacitance or conductivity of your finger tip. Painting the touchpad could certainly affect the sensitivity of the surface. I would avoid applying paint or any other treatment. -

Moonlight Modelers May Meeting - Hollywood Jim's Back Home
Alyn replied to Danno's topic in Model Club News and Announcements
That's impossible. Jim lives in a submarine some 20,000 leagues under the sea. j/k If model clubs held the draft, Jim would be a first round pick on anyones list. Love the driver in the Ice Cream Truck. Just the kind of thing that makes Jim's stuff so cool. -
Bill, it's refreshing to see a brake caliper that doesn't just float on the disc. Your's is actually mounted (bolted, I see) to a stationary bracket. Yet another nice attention to detail. Really looking forward to next weeks Heartland Nationals to see this baby up close and personal. I have my camera ready.

Every year members of the KC Slammers build a slew of promotional models for the Heartland Nationals. I'm a relatively new member and finally stepped up to the plate and volunteered to build one. Since the theme car for this years show is the 32 Ford, all the promo's are some rendition of this icon of hot rodding. This one is a 3-window coupe. I've been wanting to try a model in a yellow/silver two-tone, so I decided to use this one as a test bed for this color combination. The model is a basic, out-of-box build that has been on the bench for the last week or so. This is the quickest build, by far that I've done, but mainly due to the striking color combo, it really grabs my attention. So much so that I'll be building a more detailed version in the near future. Hopefully some of you can make it to the Heartland Nationals next week end to check out this and hundreds of other midwest miniatures. The promo's are used for raffles, auctions and such at the show.

Chicks dig guys that go to this show. I plan on testing this theory out again this year. In previous years the theory has had mixed or ambiguous results Your mileage may vary. -
Just a reminder that the 21st Annual Heartland Nationals is only 2 weeks away. If you live in the Midwest, this is the big show of the year. Here's a link to the KC Slammers contest page for the show: http://www.kcslammer...les/Page648.htm (best viewed with Firefox) This years theme is the 32 Ford. There's gonna be a bunch of them. Last I heard, there will be a full size 32 Ford Tudor Sedan street rod on display. This is a former Rod & Custom cover car. The Slammers were working on getting Larry Reyes, the original driver of the Hawaiian Funny Car to appear at the show, but that's still up in the air. Jerry Clayton of California Charger fame has also mentioned that he might make it to the show to check out Bill Davis' gorgeous model of the front engine dragster. You can see Bills model here: http://www.modelcars...topic=53715&hl= (sure looks like a "Best of Show" contender to me) 75 vendor tables full of bargains, rock & roll music by DJ Elvis Twitty, and a new class for wheeled military vehicles. Always a show worth going to. For us Kansas City boys, it's the highlight of the year. Hope to see you there. 2012 Heartland Show Flyer (Apr 17, 2012).pdf

MPC 1/12 1930 Bentley Racing Car

Well deserved, John. This is a striking piece. -
Two! Keep me in mind next time

Way to Go Team Davis! This first one is cool, but I'm more impressed that Gina bought another one. That really says something. I've heard about the TV prize down there in Arkansas. Now we know it actually exists. Double congrats on that as well. Tell Gina we expect to see the Panel truck at the Heartland

Yeh, I know it's not cool to re-post pics, but this one deserves it. This is a super nice first effort. Now I can see where you get your talent, Bill. Great job laying down a really nice color combination. What really jumps out at me is the display. Very cleverly done and the tie-in between the model and display really works well.

Bill is probably sitting under a tree somewhere eating a samich and drinking some beer so he can melt down the cans for more aluminum parts.
