Hosted on Fotki These are the parts that will make up the Rotary engine w/ some probable changes like headers and carburetor options.
-
Okay guys, I promise this will be the last change on this build. I will have to go w/ Bill Geary's suggestion and incorporate a Rotary engine on this thing. After putting together the Grand National engine I was having troubles with the oil pan being too close to the ground and since I want this thing in the weeds that became a problem. I can bring the model up and make the stance a bit higher but I don't want to do that. Some people suggested that I install a scoop on the hood but I want this model as stock and quiet as possible on the outside so that option is out the window. I started working w/ the Rotary engine and I am starting to like it, it will definitely be unique!!! Hosted on Fotki This is more or less what I'm going for, this is just the block (or cylinder if you will) of the engine. Hosted on Fotki This is a souped up version of a 1/1 Rotary engine. It's time to take a break when ....

Believe it or not, I lost a distributor once, was going crazy looking for it and found it 2 days later in the back of one of my Yorkies. Happened to be petting him and felt something weird near the tail, thought it was a tick or something Told my wife to keep them trimmed more often now!!! -
Cool interior man, that P. Yellow really goes well with the outer body color!!!!

Did some painting and building of the engine in the last couple of days. Various other parts of the engine will be added once they are installed in the engine bay...... Hosted on Fotki Hosted on Fotki Hosted on Fotki Hosted on Fotki Hosted on Fotki

I painted mine with Tamiya Chrome Yellow and finished it with Tamiya clear, I thought it went pretty smooth. Hosted on Fotki -
VW's are among my favorite modeling subjects, you just cannot go wrong when building these Tamiya brand kits. You did a terrific job on these two!!!

Not a personal attack on you my friend, I think you did a terrific job on the paint but I don't like the fact that the metal flakes in this paint are out of scale. I say this because I painted a Johan '71 Cuda w/ the Citrus Yellow Metallic and thought that the flakes looked out of scale. I did use the Nassau Blue Metallic from the same line of paints and it came out perfect. Of course, IMHO, when you take the picture under direct sunlight, the flakes become more noticeable, try taking the same pictures under the same bright day but shoot them with the model in a shaded area, I assure you that you will like it more. Of course, if this was the look you were going for then, my apologies, I know that there are 1/1 paintjobs out there with big metal flakes just like the ones the lowrider folks like to use!

When I saw Daihatsu on your thread it reminded me of the Daihatsu Rocky I owned in Puerto Rico, I loved that thing, they were fun little cars. Here is a picture of one similar to the one I use to have, mine was burgundy and silver.... Hosted on Fotki

Can't believe how a simple model like this can have so many details, you did a terrific job on this man, thanks for sharing it w/ us!!!!

Very cool man, I like this oddball kinda stuff!!!

No direspect but I agree with David also, one of my favorite clearcoats to use is Odds and Ends, 1.96 a can and never had any issues. I personally don't like to use the same stuff over and over again which is why I wanted to post the question about the Testor's lacquers. I know that everyone has a different way of doing things, I thank you guys for sharing that, it's just one of several more techniques to learn from.

Good to see you around here again Uelder, you are a very talented builder, I enjoy your work very much as I am sure everyone else here does!!!! -
Excellent work Mike, you are a talented builder so hopefully you will keep a bit busier around here!!!

Thanks Jay and the rest of the guys!! A few days back I was talking with my boy Mike Dube and he suggested exactly that but after checking around I had no luck, no one makes the P/E detail set for the GN. That leaves me with one choice, keep it Chevy on the outside and Buick at heart. In reality it was what I originally intended to do even though I would have considered Mike's advice as well as yours. The GN decal sheet has various options if I were to consider this but I have never been too crazy about adding decals as badges, you just can't beat P/E for this....

Assistive technology in model building
cruz replied to Art Anderson's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
When someone breaks out a magnifying glass, in my humble opinion, it's only saying how good of a modeler you are, think about that for a moment. They are looking for flaws, hence the reason for the magnifying glass!!! No??? Bring it on!!!! -
Hosted on Fotki Also had to work around the upper part of the engine and also make some modifications to these parts. No way I was able to use them without cutting them down. Is all part of the build and I am having some fun with this, the challenge gets crazier by the minute!!!

Here is a partial installation of the exhaust manifolds and engine parts on the chassis. Had to remove some plastic on the chassis to get the engine to fit better. Also removed the molded in exhaust which made this chassis look so toyish. Hosted on Fotki Hosted on Fotki Hosted on Fotki

I will try to install a few metal parts here and there to bring the engine alive since these modern engines are kind of boring. Hosted on Fotki Hosted on Fotki

Time for a little more updates on this thing. I have been working with the intercooler and doing lots of modifications. Didn't have many choices and had to downsize it significantly since the front of the Vega is a lot smaller and shorter from top to bottom than the Grand National's. Very cool Lyle, did you do a lot of cleanup on the resin? How thick was the body??

That's awesome my friend, color choice is perfect and cleanliness is just WOW!!!!!!

Thanks Tom!! The primer I used is Valspar enamel, they sell it in a big can at Michael's craft store. I shot the white primer (they have both gray and white). I wanted the Dupli-Color Cayenne Red to stand out and was afraid that the gray wouldn't show the right shade of red, I am pleased with this color......

Very cool my friend, color choice is pretty unique but tasteful!!!
