Testors Chrysler engine red
mrmike replied to Modlbldr's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
I have to presume that you are going by the kit painting instructions that call for Chrysler Engine Red and I have to tell you that the instructions are wrong. If you want to stick to hobby paints, use Model Master International Orange for street Hemis as it is very close. I use actual Mopar engine enamel for my Mopar model engines and those paints are available from Summit Racing. A full can should cost you about $9.00 without shipping. Don't bother going to a Dodge dealership as they do not carry the paint and are very relunctant to order it for you. -
Are We Model Hoarders?
mrmike replied to mrmike's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
Part of my problem is that I need to better organize my parts box. I also belong to the Classic Plastic Model Club and any spare parts that I don't want or need, I can bring to a meeting and let the other members take what they want. -
IIRC, Richard Hammond of the BBC's Top Gear got himself buckled into an SLR and then he couldn't reach the door to pull it down! Not made for the verically challenged! As I scan through the instructions, this kit will be a bit of a challenge to build, but I am up for a challenge! While prepping the body parts for paint, I noticed that what I thought was mold lines are actually swirls in the colored plastic. And, the swirls are percisely placed leading me to think that they were mold lines. I had thought about paint it red, but decided on Gloss Aluminium instead.

Someone once said, "There comes a time when one must up their status in life." I don't know who said that, but this is a status machine! Designed to combine the look, feel, and functionality of a sports and a GT car, the SLR McLaren did. This is my new project, Tamiya's SLR McLaren. I don't understand why Tamiya uses colored metallic plastic for the body only to have the molded product full of swirls. This body would have really shined with a little polishing. My paint will be Tamiya TS-17 Gloss Aluminium. More to come...

I started painting the accent color onto the seats and side panels this morning. After painting the side panel details and allowing them to dry, I assembled the interior. A shot of the dash. More to come...

Are We Model Hoarders?
mrmike replied to mrmike's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
I figured that after a few days of no new posts, this subject was destined for the archieves, but I am sitting here looking at my parts box and all the built kit boxes that I have not cleaned out due to my parts box being quite full. The 2-In-1 and 3-In-1 kits are starting to become a bit of a problem for me now. With parts in the kits that I am not using, where shall I keep the the extra bits? It reminded me of this thread and I thought that this would add a new wrinkle. We have discussed the kits aspect of model hoarding, but what about the spare parts that we all have? Do you keep them, toss them, trade or sell them? What do you do with your spare parts? -
I found mine at Michaels. I had heard that they were not stocked any longer due to the ink drying out inside the pens. So far, I have not had that issue.

I added the wheels and tires to the chassis and did a mockup to check the stance, particulairly the front suspension. This is exactly where I wanted the front wheels and tires! It is a good thing I decided to invert the spindles. I broke out the airbrush and painted the interior the main color of Federal Standard Blue. The accent color will be Insignia Blue. More to come...

Matt, yes this is the original factory stock release. I have picture of the box art on the first page of this thread. I have yet to see the contents of the new 2-In-1 kit so I cannot vouch for that kit nor the custom kit from a few years ago. It is possible that AMT changed the valve covers as part of an update to the kit. I wished this kit had an automatic trans instead of the 3-on-a-tree transmission.

Thank you Hertsi and Bob! I started assembly on the rear suspension tonight. And the chassis is complete! I made whitewalls using a circle template and a white Gelly Roll pen. I mounted the wheels and wheel backs after the tires were dry. More to come...

Thank you guys! juergen, the color is Model Master Lacquer Acalpulco Blue with Tamiya Racing White roof. Guys, the tires are indeed too skinny for this model. It was suggested elsewhere to sand the wheelback and hub down which I thought wouldn't work mainly due to the size of the hub thickness. And, the rim thickness makes it stand out like a sore thumb! I found a set of tires on my parts box that will serve my needs better than the kit tires which are just too skinny. They are from an unknown Revell kit. The engine is complete. I need to finish the chassis and then I'll start on the interior. More to come...

I built a Ross Gibson Street Hemi for a '71 Charger R/T a few years ago. Although I got it for free from a friend, it was worthwhile getting it.

Charlie, I have never put any thought to that at all! I suppose if I was 6 Ft. tall and 175 Lbs., I could play McNally, but I am not an actor. Nor am I 6 Ft. tall. This is something I am going to have to think about. On second thought, I am not going to think about it. McNally exists in my mind and on paper, but not on the small or big screen. I have never described him to any degree...anywhere. Let's leave it to the readers imagination. Sorry Charlie... I couldn't resist the Starkist Tuna commercial!

Niko, you are off to a good start and I am happy to be an influence to you! I have built two of these Super Bees. One, a 383 in SubLime Green and one, a Hemi in B5 Blue Metallic. I'm looking forward to more!

After talking to a good friend of mine about the Road Runner, he told me that he has ordered several sets of the clear red taillights from Missing Link Resin and that he is going to send a set to me when he gets them. Thank you Dave!! I have been thinking about this build over the past week and I must get back to it and finish it up. I need to wetsand the body again, polish it out, BMF, and begin final assembly.

Thanks Kane and Charlie! I have not done a lot to the Starliner over the last couple of days. But, I have been doing some thinking about how I am going to proceed with the build. I am seriously considering entering this into the Club's Out Of Box Build for our show in September. If not, then I will use it for practice for another build. Building OOB is not as easy for someone like me who has always added a detail here or there so I have to dial back my creativity and just follow the instructions word for word. This should be fun! The engine is partially assembled. No plug wires this time. I started working on the wheels and tires, but I had to run my Exacto around the inner edge of the tire to get the wheels to fit. It is still a tight fit. On the right is the wheel and backer. It seems to be a little wide for the kit supplied tires, don't you think? More to come...

Thanks Charlie! I hope you can be able to stop by at one of our meetings sometime. It would be great to see you there. Unfortunately, I must pass on the May 7th meeting due to other obligations. Since I have finished this build, several people have asked me about the story after Johnny's killer was caught. So, to satisfy those who want to know, I have borrowed an element from Quinn Martin Productions... The Story Epilogue- It has been almost a month since Johnny's funeral and McNally stops over to see how Teresa and the kids are doing. She is doing OK though she misses Johnny very much. She has been cleaning out the things that Johnny had owned and that she didn't want to keep. She places an envelope into McNally's hand and says, "Johnny would have wanted you to have this." McNally opens the envelope and finds the keys and title to the Dart...signed over to him. Being the tough guy that he is he tries to hold back the tears, but one does run down his cheek. So much for being a tough guy! "You can leave the car here until you are ready to take it." They both hug and McNally places a kiss on her forehead. "Thank you Teresa," he says. "No...thank you!"

Little fire plug guys
mrmike replied to crazyjim's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
I saw this thread and I had to go and watch the movie! Thanks guys! -
Thanks David! My frame and chassis pan were also warped and I spent some time the other day carefully twisting the pan and the frame back into shape. So far, they are holding their shape.
-
Thanks Niko and Stewart!
-
Thanks Curt! The body got its coat of paint this afternoon. Along with the wheels and firewall. And the chassis pan got a coat of red oxide primer. More to come...

Thanks guys! WoodyRDC, if you are in need of parts, then I would like to suggest you make a posting for those in the Wanted section. This would prevent the hi-jacking of someone's WIP thread! Or, you can go out and purchase the new release of the AMT '60 Starliner. I have started working on mold lines on the body to which there are plentiful. The worst is on the drivers side under the C pillar. I guess I'll be getting out the Bondo for this as it is quite deep. And, all the way across the deck lid and fenders. More to come...
-
Thanks guys! Donald, I added the fuel line. All other hoses (radiator and heater) are in the kit. Clay, if it doesn't have dog hair on it, it's not mine! And, I have never met your wife! Michael, if I was to finish the story then the Dart would have been finished by Johnny at some point since High School. It wasn't for racing, although it could be quite a force to be dealt with at the stoplights. I would think that Teresa would have given the Dart to McNally since he also worked on the car. Gus, those tires probably wouldn't have lasted very long under the foot of a young hot rodder!

Hemi Dart Steering Box Question
mrmike replied to Tucohoward's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
There simply appears to be no room at all for the steering box on the Hemi Dart. The issue appears to be with the headers and spacing around the frame. I thought about trying to make it fit and decided it wasn't worth the trouble and so I left it off. -
My new project is a '60 Ford Starliner. The kit has been in the stash for a few years and it is time to build it. I am going for a tu-tone paint scheme on this one. I was originally planning on a white top and green body and interior, but I hve decided on a Tamiya TS-26 white top over Model Master Acapolco Blue Metallic body with a Model Master Federal Standard Blue interior. A few mold lines to content with and then it's off to the paint booth! More to come...
