Broken bodyshells (posts, frames etc)
MrObsessive replied to Mr Stock's topic in Model Building Questions and Answers
Opinions may vary, but you're going to need to reinforce the joint that's glued to prevent it from breaking again. Some plastic rod (square or round) and some liquid glue is what I use when I want to reinforce windshield posts. In the pics below, you can see where I reinforced the posts. These weren't broken, but I made my own windshield glass so I needed some kind of lip to hold it. Now having said that, if you follow this method, you may need to make your own windshield or modify the kit piece. Hope this helps! -
Making Toggle Switches (Tip)
MrObsessive replied to goodguyinar416's topic in Tips, Tricks, and Tutorials
That is a neat idea as I tried that years ago.........the trick however is keeping everything symmetrical! Here's and old build where I did this on a Ferrari 250GT SWB........I might make them a scooch smaller if I were doing this today. -
I like it! I tried to get my first job at a Mom and Pop owned Texaco in the Fort Washington, MD area back when I was in high school a year earlier. This'll bring back some memories! Ya gotta put a couple '60's/'70's cars with that dio when you get done with it------Pinto, Vega, maybe a tired, beat up Corvair?
-
Ahhhh, but there's the rub! Finding a set will be the tough part as he's no longer printing last I knew. I'd love to get a set if one can be found on the 'Bay eventually.

One of my favorite '60's road racers and this is just fantastic! I wish someone made separate decals for these though as I'd like to tackle the old IMC kit I have in my stash. The kit's stripe decals are white but for the '66 LeMans car, they should be silver. I guess I could mask it off and paint them------but then there's that pesky Ford lettering on the sides...........

Removing lint from a Future clear coat
MrObsessive replied to Vetteman15's topic in Model Building Questions and Answers
I wouldn't wet sand the Future as it's already a water based medium. Instead, I would try lightly dry sanding the area (maybe start with 4000 and work up), and then polishing it up with a mild wax abrasive. Everyone has their favorites, but mine happens to be Meguiar's Car Cleaner Wax with a chamois cloth. If you decide to re-coat it and to minimize any dust particles floating around, I would keep the model while the clear is drying in some kind of drying box, and certainly in an area where there isn't a lot of dust present. Some folks prefer their basements, but to me that's the worst place in my house due to cats running around with their hair flying. Hope this helps! -
Japanese Bobtails are born that way. Yori is interesting in that she has tabby markings.........the Japanese highly desire the Calico ones for some reason. I thought about having her bred as they're kinda rare, but with the howling at all hours of the night because she was in heat and I'm trying to sleep, just got to be too much! She was fixed about 3 years ago, and things are much more peaceful. Not to mention I'm not in a position to have to take care of a houseful of cats! These two are enough!

1959 Dodge - My "Tunaboat" Replica - FINISHED
MrObsessive replied to Ramfins59's topic in Model Cars
She's a stunning beauty Rich!! Excellent foil work as it's truly done well! I have two of these, one just the body----and the other the reissue that was out a number of years ago. I'm very tempted to whack the roof off one of the bodies as this is the ONLY correct rendition of the '57-'59 Dodge/Plymouth 2 dr hardtop rooflines that's somewhat available on the 'Bay........to someday fix RC2's '58 Plymouth. -
That is an ABSOLUTELY BEAUTIFUL car! I too have been trying to find one of these on the 'Bay............I want one to go with the N.A R.T Spyder that I'd like to build. Yeah Skip, this car BEGS to be done proper in a larger scale! The Revell/Renwal one is simply terrible.
-
As an AMC fan I like it! Yours more than likely ran a 304 V8, as that was pretty much the largest V8 AMC would have had for that car during the mid '70's time period. Along with my '69 AMX, I also had a Hornet-----a '76 2 door (non hatchback) with a straight six and automatic. The engine was bulletproof in that car but unfortunately, rust was taking its toll in the rear quarters, and the trunk floor.

Well, here are pics of my two "kids". The gray one is Captain------he's part Maine Coon with bushy tail and all and he's 12 years old. The other one's name is Yori, and she's a Japanese Bobtail. Yori's four years old now and she's a bit chubbier now since this pic was taken a couple years ago. Because of the big age difference, Yori runs the house and she bosses Captain around. Every once in awhile, Captain has had enough of her bossiness, and a fight erupts which will have her running and hiding for awhile. Cats are their own source of entertainment as evidenced by this video below..........

Gonzo's pro built models.
MrObsessive replied to rickcaps55's topic in Links to Aftermarket Suppliers
I tried using Internet Archive besides Google in seeing when activity ceased on his site. The latest that there was any activity according to them, was in July of this past year. Now Internet Archive only does a snapshot of the site at that time, not how many times it was updated. Just the same, any hits after that date take you to the site domain page and not his original website. -
1959 Chevy Impala----Just a tease! 4/9/16
MrObsessive replied to MrObsessive's topic in WIP: Model Cars
James the seat swivel I soldered is actually some thin flat brass stock (not sure of the size), and .040 round brass stock. The round piece does look like a stamped contact one would use in crimping wires, as I worked and trained people in crimping in my last job. There was some flux residue that I hadn't washed off before I took the pic, lending itself to the appearance of a contact. Interesting that you mention it though, as I'm considering using "pogo pins" to eventually latch the doors. I've got a million of those as my job was just throwing them away for some reason. I said to myself "NO!! Those can be used to make catches for doors, trunks etc!". So I now have a supply which will last me the rest of my modeling lifetime! -

No wonder some of the letters are starting to disappear on my keyboard! Yeah, time to get the 'ol sprue cutters out! -
Very cool weathering job Ron, and very convincing! Sadly, that's how I remember a lot of '55-'57 Chevy's in the late '60's as a kid. They were as common as grass so you could get them for next to nothing. Another very common sight when I was a kid were VW Beetles. Now, I can't remember the last time I saw a Beetle (or any of its variants) on the road.

You could try Easy Off (Yellow Can) that stuff's great for getting paint off plastic and not hurt it. There's also Castrol Super Clean (Purple Power), but I personally haven't tried it. Others may more suggestions.........

1959 Chevy Impala----Just a tease! 4/9/16
MrObsessive replied to MrObsessive's topic in WIP: Model Cars
On the driver's side seat, you can see I added piping which should wrap up and around the sides of the seats. I used Plastruct .010 round rod to duplicate this. BTW, I highly recommend Plastruct styrene for jobs like this. Plastruct seems to be made of a denser material than Evergreen as it doesn't snap so easily when trying to go around corners for instance. I finished the driver's side of the trim, and here is a "mock up" piece of BMF over the trim. Not too shabby if I must say so myself! I tried to replicate the "indentation" in the trim per the 1:1 as best I can............. I wanted to start working on the seat bottoms and like the seatbacks, I used the same round rod to reproduce the piping which goes around the multicolored seat pattern. Revell gives you a stick on decal for this so I'll have to see how well this will hold up. As you can see in this shot, since the seats have to lean forward, the rear part of the seat bottom sides have to be "notched" a bit for clearance. Top view.................... I'm adding some semi round rod to fill in the empty space left by the notching and filing. Of course, this will be all filed and sanded smooth when it's all said and done. The chrome bolster on the very bottom of the seats had to be cut apart to make hinging of the seatback easier. BTW, the other hinges will be made of flattened brass rod.....I just haven't made them as of yet. The little "dimple" you see in the middle of the thin section that was cut away, will be where the soldered T section will go. And just a mock up to see how things are fitting so far. Well that's it for the time being! Between shoveling snow, chopping up ice among other things, I hope to get some more done on this today. Modeling time is few and far between these days due to work, endless snowstorms and the headache that gives, and just life getting in the way. Thanks for keeping up just the same, and I do appreciate all the nice comments! -
1959 Chevy Impala----Just a tease! 4/9/16
MrObsessive replied to MrObsessive's topic in WIP: Model Cars
It's time for more interior work, and I must say-------there's a lot of work that needs done to the seats! First, here are a couple pics on how I want my interior to look............ As I'm learning, both the front and rear seats will need some major correction to be close to what I want. IMO the front seat needs the most work as the overall shape is wrong, and NOTHING fits right according to the way the seats go together. For example, looking at the pic below, you'll see how mismatched the trim is despite having the seatbacks lined up as well as possible! Woefully out of line here! So here's what's in store............... I'm holding the seatbacks as well as possible, and I flowed some Ambroid Pro Weld to glue them together. When the seats were dried somewhat, I started to try and fill in the seat tops with .015 styrene round rod from Plastruct. I also sanded away the seat top "chrome" trim using Ted "Chopper" Lear's trick of sanding away the trim, brushing on some liquid glue, let it dry, then sand it away again to get rid of the "memory". You know what........................the heck with this! I'm going to go whole hog and cut everything apart and make to seats tilt up just like the 1:1. To make things work halfway reasonably, I soldered up this "T" joint which the insides of the seatbacks will swing on............ OK, I set that aside and started work on trying to get these seats to appear a lot more accurate........after some sanding and filing away to get the correct shapes, I'm trying to replicate the side trim per the 1:1. I'm not done yet so hang on! -
Austin, check out the AMC forums here. Scroll down a bit and there's a couple shots with the engine out of the car. BTW, I seldom if ever use Google anymore. I use Ixquick (Start Page). IMO, they yield better results and don't track your every move. Edit: And here's another pic I found using Start Page.............. Hope this helps!

Well, I have their '62-'63 Volvo P1800 that's been calling my name for the longest time. I have plans for it-----might go whole hog on it and open up everything. The suspension will have me a bit stumped as I don't have any kits on hand that would match the P1800's underpinnings. I've got lots of pics though of the underside of the car so if all else fails, I can always scratch something up.

The sedans still had them though............

MrObsessive replied to rickcaps55's topic in Links to Aftermarket Suppliers
Hmmm, if that indeed is true, that's really sad as he had some cool stuff! He didn't appear very old-------I wonder what happened? Some obscure items he built as what he did wasn't part of the "mainstream". -
AirTrax Resin makes the Type 3. Tapani Rauramo is the fella you'll need to get in touch with as far as purchasing. He can be contacted here. If you'd like to see what other kits AirTrax offers, just click here and there's a bunch of pics of his items.

1959 Chevy Impala----Just a tease! 4/9/16
MrObsessive replied to MrObsessive's topic in WIP: Model Cars
Thanks for the compliment! As far as the brass turning green------not really. I know that if the Blacken It is left out in the open and there's residue, that ends up turning green. It may be that you'll need to wash off any excess after you've dipped the part. That's one of the things I've done in the past. I'm working on the interior as far as the seats right now-------not a fun job as there's some problems I'm running into. Today's a snow day, so later on I might post pics as to what's happening with that right now.
