American Lafrance
Aaronw replied to 79FlatTopDriver's topic in WIP: Model Trucks: Big Rigs and Heavy Equipment
I saw a resin cast one on ebay awhile back, but it didn't look like the quality was that great from the photos posted. -
Thanks, I like those old trucks, there is just something about 50's cabovers. I figured it was resin but thought it might be the guy casting old Peterbuilts a few years back (Silver city, Silver state? something like that). Should have bought some when he was casting, I really had my eye on some of his 40's Peterbilt conventional cabs, but as they say you snooze you lose.

Vacuum Or Pressure Molding Service Contractor
Aaronw replied to j_nigrelli's topic in Tips, Tricks, and Tutorials
I would suggest contacting a resin caster that sells similar stuff then work out a deal on the use of your master. I've had people send me stuff the've done for fire apparatus builds. I make a couple copies to send back with thier original. They get a couple parts for free and I get a new part I can cast. Its just a matter of finding some one interested in your part. Mold making supplies are not cheap and they are time consuming to make so it wouldn't be worthwhile for most people to make a 1 shot mold. -
All the 5 min epoxy I've ever used smells like feet, so I'd say yes it all stinks. Funny thing is casting resin really doesn't smell except for the clear stuff which will curl your toes, its like a perm solution and acetone cocktail. I recently bought some 5 min epoxy at Hobbytown, it came in two squirt bottles like you describe, kind of like ketchup bottles. I like it, its easy to use and doesn't seep out like the twin syringe style tubes do since they sit upright when not in use.

Testors Decal Kit
Aaronw replied to snack truck's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
That should fix your problem. With most commercial decals you can get away with the slide the decal off the paper onto a finger or paint brush, but most of the do it yourself decal papers are really thin and the method described above works a lot better. The translucent issue mentioned a few posts above is also common, on darker colored models I usually find I need to cut a piece of blank white decal film for a base or the decal will be too dark. Those printing with an Alps get around this problem by printing a white background under the decal. -
Wanted A Ford Or Chevy C.o.e
Aaronw replied to evilone's topic in WIP: Model Trucks: Big Rigs and Heavy Equipment
Thank you and curse you, now I have something else to find. I could find a use for a couple of those, but I love all old cab overs, just so odd looking. -
Wanted A Ford Or Chevy C.o.e
Aaronw replied to evilone's topic in WIP: Model Trucks: Big Rigs and Heavy Equipment
RMR doesn't actually have a 47 like that. 1947 was a transitional year, early 47 is like the truck evilone posted, late 47 is the later 48-55 style. I ordered some stuff from him last year and he said he basically put the same truck twice by mistake, he has it listed as a 47 and as a 48-50 but its the same casting. -
'32 Ford Pickup Is Now Available.
Aaronw replied to Lyle Willits's topic in Truck Aftermarket / Resin / 3D Printed
Ok, I was just curious since there is a '34. So basically little stuff but not easily changed, thanks for satisfying my curiosity. -
Why does that not surprise me? Oh, well you have a better magazine and website, I bet you build better stuff than grumpy Mr H too.
-
Yes, they contract exclusive kits. Basically they order and buy the whole production run. They don't have the Stevens logo but I believe the American LaFrance kits re-issued in 2001 were ordered by Stevens.

'32 Ford Pickup Is Now Available.
Aaronw replied to Lyle Willits's topic in Truck Aftermarket / Resin / 3D Printed
How much difference is there between a '32 and the existing '29 and '34 Ford pickup kits? I wouldn't think there would be much but for someone to go to the trouble of casting a conversion of that complexity there must be a fair amount. -
Wanted A Ford Or Chevy C.o.e
Aaronw replied to evilone's topic in WIP: Model Trucks: Big Rigs and Heavy Equipment
That is a 41-46/47 Chevrolet, there is no model version of that cab in resin or plastic that I know of. If you find one please show it off because I want one too. -
Thank you, from looking when the not so good kits listed came out I think it explains why I had the impression I had, I got started modeling as a kid in the 70's and early 80's. I was out of the hobby or most of the 90's so never saw the later kits when the quality was improving. I really like the attitude I'm seeing from Lindberg, but still had these lingering doubts about which were the good kits and which were the bad. Sounds like most of the current line up is good stuff, I assume the 3 Pyro kits are still around since they are the only game in town for the subjects. I am curious are these three buildable wth patience or are they examples of scratch building is easier?
-
Just to be clear I didn't start this post to run down Lindberg, I've been very happy with what I've seen since they came under new management. However my perception of the company since I was a kid right or wrong has been of second rate kits. I've seen others make similar comments so I know I'm not alone in that perception. I know they have a hodgepodge of in house kits and kits they acquired from others. I do want to support the company, which is why I posted this. If the three I specifically mentioned, are the only current kits to watch out for that works too.
-
Lindberg has a reputation of being on the bad side for kits and many modelers including myself are wary of their kits. I know the new management is trying hard to bring us new stuff so I'd like to support them but also don't need a bunch of bad kits added to my stash. So what Lindberg kits really stand out as good or bad? I know the 1934 Ford pickup 3 in 1 is a decent kit because I'm building one, and the Dodge A100 pickup Little Red Wagon looks pretty decent as well. I've also heard their new Dodge Charger is a nice kit. The '48 Lincoln, Cord and Auburn are legendary in their badness. What about the rest? If you've built a Lindberg kit tell me about it, what was it and how was the quality. Thanks
-
You can see their line up and pricing here, model roundup is a pretty decent online shop too if you can't find these locally. http://www.modelroundup.com/lin20001.html The '37 Cord, '35 Auburn and '48 Lincoln are kits I've heard you reeeeaaaaally need to want one to subject yourself to building them. Apparently a lot of problems so I'd ask around before buying them so you know what you are in for. Probably good advice for any of these but I understand most are average to good quality.

What Is It With Wives And Our Hobby!?!?
Aaronw replied to LVZ2881's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
Sorry I don't know what you people are talking about, my wife is very supportive of my models. She is always hearing from her mom about how her dad keeps buying real trucks and heavy equipment so I think she realizes she is lucky my stuff is much smaller. -
Yes Lindberg and Hawk are under the same management now, and so far they have done a new Dodge Charger which sounds like it is a good kit, and they have brought back quite a few older kits that were getting hard to get and expensive on ebay. The Dodge A100 pickup "Little Red Wagon" and the Dodge L700 cabover tractor. The L700 is currently available with a flat bed and a 1940 Ford as the load, the whole kit tractor, trailer and car runs around $30. The L700 is a tired mold so it has a fair bit of flash but it is available. It is supposed to be released later this year as a stand alone tractor and as I understand it the mold is being reworked to improve the quality but I may be wrong on that last part. The also have the 1934 Pickup again which is a nice 3 in 1 kit, its the only one I've built so far. Lindberg turned out some so so and bad kits in the past but I understand the kits they did in the last few years were good quality, and I haven't heard anything bad about the kits released last year.

Never had a problem with black vs other colors. I like Krylon, but the various Rustolium brands and Duplicolor are good too. I've never used the Tamiya or Model Master spray paints since they cost about 4x as much. I use their bottle paints a lot though. If you don't prime first you might try that too, I try to use a color similar the the top coat, black for black, white for white or other light colors, red-brown for red and grey for everything else. I find the primers cover better making later coats easier to apply.

I've heard some rumors of a pending sale on a couple of sites, but nothing regarding to whom. Can't get much worse than currently, they wouuldn't even be producing any models right now if it were not for The Model King and Stevens. I'm hoping they get someone who will do for AMT what has been happening with Revell and Lindberg new tools and re-issues that haven't been around for awhile.

I recently ran across an ebay seller with a bunch of truck kits, this has to be a resin caster, or at least a retailer. They go by the name Frontier Resin Design and are in the PA area. I'm saving my money for NNL West's swap meet and dealers, but there is some stuff I'd like to get this summer when the OT comes around. If they sell outside ebay I'd prefer to go that route anyway since its usually cheaper (no bidding wars, just a price) and I can get as many as I want, instead of doing the win some lose some thing. Thanks

Then I'll pick out a mug, will the airlines let you bring one on the plane or are they worried you might break it and take over the plane with ceramic shards. Thanks, guys, I wasn't sure the website is kind of vague so I wasn't sure if it was a show up with what you brought at he last minute kind of thing or if there was supposd to be some sort of registration I was missing. There are a couple of us somewhat local from the Scale Firehouse hoping to make it, maybe take over the end of a table with cop cars and fire engines. As far as the original post I should have my '68 Plymouth Fury Park Ranger patrol car finished this weekend and I have a couple of 40-50's Forest Service engines I'm trying to get finished up in time to bring them.
-
Thought I'd bump this one instead of starting a new post. Can any of you give me an idea what to expect? I've tried to get down there the past couple of years, but this will be the first time I've actually made it.

I think they changed the formula when it became just Super Clean (no Castrol), there is also something called Purple Power which is similar. About 2 years ago they pulled Castrol Super Clean off the shelf in California, a few months later it was back as Super Clean and seems to be weaker. I was lucky I just happend to be going to Arizona when CSC disappeared and I grabbed a couple of bottles of the good stuff. Super Clean and Purple Power still work, just more slowly, overnight vs a few hours. I've also heard Simple Green works as paint remover too. I wouldn't trust any of these on resin though unless someone has specifically tested it. Some including CSC and Purple Power can make resin into goo.
