Licensing Fees Gone Wild...
Aaronw replied to Harry P.'s topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
I think the issue with licensing comes down to they can't just give it away and still protect their trademarks. Coming up with a small reasonable fee or other arrangement allowing its use for an item like a model isn't worth their time, and they are too short sighted to consider the advertising angle. Realistically I'd think that assigning the commercial value of seeing their logo in 10,000 kits as payment in full for use of its image would be a fair trade. A poor treament of that logo would be reasonable to pull its use or even sue. The first Mustang kit from a company that looks oddly like a Pacer, and in the words of the Soup Nazi "No Ford's for you"! There are a few companies that get it. Erickson Aircrane is one, they build what was once known as the Sikorsky S-64 Skycrane http://www.ericksonaircrane.com/Content.as...delerZone07.asp The important bit that shows they get it In order to mitigate the challenges (read “painsâ€) of coordinating a paid royalty and quality control system, Erickson Air-Crane feels an equitable arrangement would benefit all parties which is thus: We will suspend paid royalty requirements in return for your honorable attention towards accuracy in paint scheme and design of your replicas of the Erickson S-64 Aircrane Helicopter. This would include proper dimensions, paint, and decals accurate in color and placement to the design of our S-64. Basically don't do anything to make our company look bad and we won't send our laywers after you for just making a nice model of our helicopters. Absolutely no reason other companies couldn't do something similar, they get exposure and we don't have to fiddle around with issues like individually placing letters on a tire (although I do give MPC credit for thinking outside the box). I understand Ford is a major pain about this stuff, to the point of going after hot rodder type websites that show the Ford logo in the photos of the cars. The logo is ON THE CARS IN THE PHOTO BECAUSE THEY ARE FORDS!!!! I don't know what kind of pin heads think this stuff up that they feel the need to go after enthusists taking photos of cars and sharing them on the web. Real braniacs. -
02-05 Dodge Ram 1500?
Aaronw replied to fairlaneranch's topic in Truck Aftermarket / Resin / 3D Printed
Both are a little older 94-? but there was a decent snap kit of a Dodge 2500, and a sport truck VTS? that I am pretty sure is a glue kit. Might be a little easier than de-monsterizing one of the Lindberg kits. -
Just an update on cold weather casting. It is working fine to cast out in the garage, I keep the silicone and resin in the house until I'm going to cast, then I set up a little ceramic space heater on the work bench. For the silicone I made a sheet rock lean-to to help keep it warm, so the heater just blows into the small fire resistant box instead of trying to heat the whole garage, an impossible task for the little guy, I thought about just using a cardboard box but was worried it might catch fire. After about 2 hours it is getting tacky then I bring it inside (less chance of it springing a leak on the carpet once it is tacky) where it cures the rest of the way. For the resin half I just warm the molds in front of the space heater for about 10 minutes while I get everything else ready to go. I shut off the heater while pouring because the fan tends to blow the resin stream around. Once its all poured I start up the heater and go back inside where its warm. I got three sets poured before the resin got chilly and started acting funny (had to give it a little turbo boost with MEK, then it was fine), it was 28 degrees outside last night, not much warmer in the garage. If I hadn't been leaving the resin jugs out there when I came inside I probably could have kept going indefinately. Anyway its not an ideal set up but it works. Just thought I'd share in case others find themselves in a similar situation. Needless to say I didn't get the giant propane heater for Christmas I asked for.

12 Megapixels W/5x Optical ?
Aaronw replied to Steve D.'s topic in Model Building Questions and Answers
I have a Cannon S3IS I have been pretty happy with. It is 6mp with a 12x optical zoom. In manual mode it allows adjustment of the Fstop and shutter speed. It was a bit higher than your listed price, I think I paid $350 or so, but Cannon brought out the S5IS earlier this year, so you can probably find one marked down since its the older model. Of course if you can find a deal like Gregg did its hard to go wrong with an $80 camera that takes good pics. -
Well it looks good anyway. Wish I had known you were looking for info on them. I have a whole fleet of them here at work and can get you all the pics you need, sedans, SUV's, pickups, even a van.
-
Lookslike you did a great job on it. I love the idea of a Quicy ME wagon, I've been going through my Emergency! DVDs taking screen shots of some of the ambulances for future builds, Quincy's wagon would fit right in for those patients Johnny and Roy couldn't help.

A Little Help With Some Motors
Aaronw replied to Aaronw's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
Thanks, that should keep me busy for awhile. I have a '60 Starliner that might be able to donate a motor too. -
Parts for the Model King Ford F-350 Pickup Kit?
Aaronw replied to gasman's topic in Truck Aftermarket / Resin / 3D Printed
Nevermind I misunderstood what you were looking for, I get confused with the different names each company uses for with or without fenders. I think I read styleside, and in my mind thought stepside. I know I've seen people lengthen the bed on the '84 GMC, using two kits. It doesn't look too hard and a short bed from a long bed shouldn't need two kits, but you would have to find out where to make the cuts. I am a little surprised no body seems to sell resin short / long beds for pickups, but I've never seen anyone who does. -

Couldn't you just use the bed from one of the 50's Fords? I thought I read that the bed really didn't change on the Fords. -
Partial Paint Removal On A Die-cast

I've heard non-acetone nail polish works well too, its supposed to remove the detail paint and leave the base paint alone. -
A Little Help With Some Motors
Aaronw replied to Aaronw's topic in General Automotive Talk (Trucks and Cars)
I've been to that GMC site, its a great resource for old GMC trucks. I was thinking the 348 out of the '59 El Camino might be a good start since it is the same time period. Isn't there a 409 in one of the Impala kits? I know there is a 390 in the '70 Ford police car, is there a better source for that motor? I've heard its not the best example of it. Seems like no luck on a big I-6 though, plenty of examples of the Chevy 6 though. Thanks -
There is an example of one built in the trucks forum. http://www.modelcarsmag.com/forums/index.php?showtopic=7949 Basically this is a very old kit, so you can expect a lot of flash and some peculiarities associated with building a kit designed in the 60's. One the other hand it is an unusual subject the price is very low. Truck, trailer and a car under $30 is hard to beat. If you are ok with a kit you have to spend some time with to get it right no problem, if you prefer kits that kind of fall together you might want to look elsewhere.

Never mind, must remember google is your friend. http://www.nnlwest.org/ Hope to see some of you March 1.

I have no idea (actually finishing something would be a feat in itself for me), but I really want to make it this year. Do you happen to know the dates yet?

Autocar A64b Questions
Aaronw replied to PatRedmond's topic in WIP: Model Trucks: Big Rigs and Heavy Equipment
I don't know which engine is in the kit, but I stared this thread on engine colors awhile back that might help. http://www.modelcarsmag.com/forums/index.php?showtopic=2453 -
I'm contemplating building some motors, but could use some help with where to start. Some of you seem to be pretty knowledgable about the heritage of the various motors, how they we're de-stroked, bored out, cylinders added / removed, sold to another manufacturer etc to create a different motor. What I'm hoping to build is the following GMC 305/351 cid V6 as used in GMC pickups and heavy trucks in the 60's. I'm hoping I can start with an existing kit motor and modify the block, maybe one of the GM big block engines? Ford 300 cid I-6 as used in lots of pickups and heavy trucks in the 60's Ford 361HD as used in Ford F and C series trucks (I think this was a de-stroked 390 cid Ford engine) Ford 391HD as used in Ford F and C series trucks (de-stroked 428?) Dodge Cummins turbo diesel Ford Powerstroke, would the 7.3L block from the Ford Dually work as a start or is it a completely different motor? Biggest problem I see with the Ford I-6 and Cummins is finding a big enough I6 to start with, the Chevy I6's I know of are all quite a bit smaller displacement than the 300 and way to small for the 360-400 cid of the Cummins. Thanks

70's Detroit Diesel Green?
Aaronw replied to ZIL 111V's topic in WIP: Model Trucks: Big Rigs and Heavy Equipment
Krylon has Cat yellow, old and new. They actually have a line covering most of the big tractor maker colors. -
Finished Shelby Mustang GT500 (and Ford GT Roadster )
Aaronw replied to Peter Lombardo's topic in Model Cars
I missed this the first time around, the Shelby looks great. The new bodystyle didn't grab me at first but its really starting to grow on me. I don't normally like the big wheels with rubber band tires either but they look great on this. -
Thanks for that pic, I very distinctly remember the nearest 3 the green #7 car, the blue one next to it and the VW. That brings back a lot of memories. Didn't they give away hot wheels at some gas stations during the early 70's? I remember getting toy cars that I'm pretty sure were hot wheels when I'd go to the gas station with my grandmother. I think it was Shell, because I only remember getting them with her, my parents favored Texaco, Mobil and Standard Oil / Chevron (ok so maybe they had something against Shell and Exxon rather than being faithful to the other oil companies ). When I started reading this the first hotwheels cars that came to mind were the Mantis (I think thats the name) that had side by side seats and a double flip up bubble top, the other I think came a bit later because I remember getting it in second grade ('76) it had a high voltage theme, kind of a door stop covered with lightning bolts.

70's Detroit Diesel Green?
Aaronw replied to ZIL 111V's topic in WIP: Model Trucks: Big Rigs and Heavy Equipment
I've used Dupli-colors DD Alpine Green, I haven't actually compared it up close to a 1-1 engine, but it looks close to me. If you don't like that, last winter I didn't want to wait for nice spray paint weather so I tried the Polly S British Interior Grey Green. It was actually pretty close if maybe a touch lighter, the Polly S is a brush on acrylic but you might see if its available in Testors or Tamiya spray cans. British Interior Grey Green is a military aircraft color if your LHS seperates paints into military and non-military colors. -
Its real simple, take your clear part, dip it in Future, touch the corner to a paper towel so the excess wicks away, let it dry in a dust free place. Works great. You can brush it on if you've already installed the glass, but the dipping method works better. If you screw it up, take some windex, clean the Future off and try again.

Resin Paint Question? Can Someone Help
Aaronw replied to 82notch's topic in Car Aftermarket / Resin / 3D Printed
Clean it as Crashalot said. I've found Krylon primer to work the best of those I've used.
